Department of Mechanical Engineering

Program: Course: Engineering Entrepreneurship,

BSc Mechanical Engineering ME-273
Assignment: Complex Engineering Session: 2022
Problem
Maximum Marks: 20 Year: 2024, Spring Semester
Time Allowed: Submission Date: On the day of
presentation

 You can do the assignments in group of maximum three students. The group
members must be from the same section
 If you cannot find a group you would have to submit the assignment
individually
 The title page of your report must have the name and registration number of
the group members
 The submission is in hard copy and you must bring your report on the day of
your presentation
 The business ideas discussed in the class as example cannot be used as your
project assignment

Problem Brief

Assume that your project group is a team of entrepreneurs who is passionate to

build a successful and financially sustainable startup engineering business. Your
team is supposed to achieve success in all the four stages of entrepreneurial activity
as discusses in the class, i.e., (1) conceive a legitimate business idea, (2) develop a
viable product or service based on the business idea, (3) develop a business based
on that product or service and (4) convert that business into a financially
sustainable business. Keeping these four stages in mind; you are expected to
conduct product or service specific feasibility study and draft and effective
business plan assuming your course instructor to be a venture capitalist you expect
to fund your startup. You are expected to develop a 35 to 40 page detailed business
plan.

Key Deliverables

a. Identify a legitimate engineering business idea based on your observation of

either environmental trends, some unique problem that you can solve or
finding a legitimate gap in the existing marketplace. Prove that the idea is
the passion of at least one of your team members. Make sure you properly
reference the foundations of the idea you are selecting. Provide the
evidence of brainstorming session you conduct for idea generation. Identify
the idea protection steps you would take to ensure the proper safeguarding of
your engineering business idea. Explain which government agency would
you have to contact to protect your idea.

b. Once your idea is ready, demonstrate a business or service prototype of your

entrepreneurial idea. You may use some CAD (computer aided design)
software, Adobe photoshop demonstrations or free hand sketch of your
product or service prototype.

c. Based on the specific nature of your product or service idea, conduct

feasibility analysis to a level of detail suitable to your product or service
idea. The feasibility analysis must constitute four elements i.e., (a) product
or service feasibility analysis, (b) industry or target market feasibility
analysis, (c) organizational feasibility analysis and (d) financial feasibility
analysis including projected sales, price, revenues, breakeven point and
return on investment. The foundation information for these analyses must be
as well referenced as possible and the assumptions must be as realistic
as possible. As an example, you would be provided an example business
plan case study of MAHARA enterprise (a local startup).

d. Based on the feasibility study develop a 35-40 pages comprehensive

business plan constituting following elements:

1. Cover page and table of contents

2. Industry analysis (industry size, growth rate, sales projections, industry
trends and long-term projections)
3. Company Description (owners vision statement, company mission
statement, product or service, current status, legal status)
4. Market analysis (market size analysis (reference), market segmentation
(reference) and realistic market share expected)
5. Economics of business (revenue drivers, operating margins, fixed and
variable cost, projected sales, total startup cost). As well referenced as
possible
6. Design and development plan (product and service development status
with evidence, proprietary issues)
7. Operations plan (general approach demonstrated with a process flow
diagram, business location and facilities and equipment).
8. Management team (organogram, job roles and descriptions and resumes)
9. Project management plan (activity breakdown, time and budget
estimates, PERT or CPM analysis on Primavera / MS projects and total
startup cash estimate)
10.Appendices

NOTE: These elements 1-10 must be conducted and documented

considering all the four stages of a successful entrepreneurial venture i.e., (1)
conceive a legitimate engineering business idea, (2) develop a viable product
or service based on the engineering business idea, (3) develop a business
based on that product or service and (4) convert that business into a
financially sustainable business

Reporting format
NOTE:
 While doing items (1-11), ensure that all the relevant referencing of
the books, research papers and standard online forums is made
available in the report

 Also, the 20 slides presentation must accompany the 35–40-page

business plan on the pre-decided date of presentation

 Referencing should follow Chicago format available at

https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/
chicago_manual_17th_edition/cmos_formatting_and_style_guide/

References must be added in the document using ENDNOTE
