INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS
A computer is an electronic device, operating under the control of
instructions stored in its own memory that can accept data (input),
process the data according to specified rules, produce information
(output), and store the information for future use.

Examples of computing devices: smartphones, tablets, desktop

computers, servers, and laptops.

Main components of a computing device: motherboard, graphics card,

network card, USB port and hard drive.

Main computing devices: mouse, keyboard, CPU, hard disk, printer, and
monitor.

Every computer system consists of hardware (refers to the physical

components of a computer that you can see and touch) and
software(refers to a set of instructions that tell a computer what to
do).
Hardware
Hardware refers to the external or physical components of a computer
that you can see and touch.

There are two types of computer hardware: external and internal.

Internal hardware includes components such as memory, a video card,

or a CPU; while external hardware examples include input devices
such as keyboards, a mouse, and image scanners; and output devices
such as printers, speakers, and monitors.

 Internal hardware devices are also known as wireless devices.

External hardware devices are also known as peripheral devices
since they are externally connected to the computer.
 Example of some hardware devices.
 Computer case (or computer tower)
 Motherboard
 Central processing unit (CPU)
 Graphics processing unit (GPU)
 Internal disk drive
 Optical disk drive
 Internal cooling mechanisms
 Keyboard and mouse

Software
Software refers to a set of instructions, data or programs used to
operate computers and execute specific tasks. Software is a generic
term used to refer to applications, scripts and programs that run on a
device.

There are three types of computer software: system software, utility

software and application software.

1. System software is a software that is intended to control,

support or operate computers. Windows, macOS, Android and
iOS are examples of system software.

2. Utility software is a software designed to help analyze, configure,

optimize or maintain a computer. It is used to support the
computer infrastructure. It performs certain tasks like virus
detection, installation, and uninstallation, data backup, deletion
of unwanted files, etc. Some examples are antivirus software, file
management tools, compression tools, disk management tools,
etc.

3. Application software(app)
is a type of computer program that performs a specific personal,
educational, and business function. Each application is designed
to assist end-users in accomplishing a variety of tasks, which
may be related to productivity, creativity, or communication.
