Lab 2 - Frictional Forces
Lab 2 - Frictional Forces
Names: _____________________________________________________
Purpose:
To find the coefficient of friction between a wooden block and a wood surface.
Hypothesis:
The coefficient of friction between a wooden block and a wood surface will be _______________ and
will ________________________________ as the mass of the wooden block is increased. (2T)
Materials:
wooden board, wooden block, force sensor, LabQuest 2, various masses.
Procedure:
1. Place the wooden block on the board. Connect the force sensor to the LabQuest 2 and attach it to the
wooden block.
2. Using the force sensor, pull the wooden block at a constant speed across the wooden board. The force
sensor must be completely horizontal! Note the reading on the LabQuest 2 of the force and record it in the
table below.
3. Add a mass to the wooden block and repeat Step 2.
4. Repeat Step 3 until the table is complete.
2. Why is the normal force equal to the weight of the wooden block? Draw a free-body diagram to support
your answer. (3TC)
3. Why is the applied force equal to the frictional force? Refer to your free-body diagram above. (1T)
SPH3U1
4. What does the slope of your graph represent? Use equations you have learned to support
your answer. (2T)
5. The expected value of the slope is 0.20. Compare this value to the value you calculated and
determine the percent error for your experiment. (2A)
6. Are your results in excellent (<1%), good (1-5%), fair (5-10%), or poor (>10%) agreement with the
accepted value?(1C)
7. State two errors that may have affected your results. Please include the type of error and any solutions to
reduce/eliminate the effect. (4AC)
Conclusion:
8. Are the results of your experimental data consistent with the concepts and equations outlined in your
theory section? Explain your answer by referring to specific measured or calculated values, and graphical
trends you observed in the analysis of the data. (3TC)
