Summer comprehension
is the reinforcement
time to take worksheets.
a break from school but not from learning. We suggest that
you plan some interesting family activities this summer to help your child’s learning. Try
some of the following ideas, and make up some of your own.

 Being outside is important for all children. Explore outside in the fresh air. See
what your kids can discover about the area around your house.
 Visit a library or a bookstore.
 Try out a simple recipe , e.g bake cupcakes, make a jelly, make a sandwich or a
drink
 Help your child read directions for how to play a new game.
 Include your child in writing up a grocery list, finding things in the grocery store.
 Help your child create a story; talk about things they like then write the words
down as a story for them. They could draw a picture of their story and then bring it
to school to share during Circle Time.
 You can take advantage of the time you spend with your kids in the car by reading
street signs and billboards. Find 2 D & 3D shapes on billboards.
 Generate rhyming words.
 Count the syllables in spoken and written words.
 Practice mental math by adding and subtracting up to two digit numbers in your
head.
 ‘Think of a number’ game. What's 1 more than that number? 1 less? 10 more? 10
less?
 Help your child to make a make a map of your house
 Practice telling time
 Have your child use a small cup to fill a bucket of water. Count how many cups
were needed to fill the bucket.
 Have your child use his/her hand to measure objects around their room.

Suggested movies/t.v series for your child to watch:

 Peter Rabbit
 Blippi
 Sid The Science Kid
 Cloud Babies
 Nemo
 Lion King
 The Toy Story
 Madagascar
 The Curious Monkey
 Caillou
 Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends

Along with fun activities, revision of the taught concepts will help your child meet the
challenges of the next year confidently. We have compiled a list of tasks related to
reading, writing and grammar skills, to be done at home under your guidance.

A Note from the Literacy Coordinator
May 29, 2019

Dear Parents,

Our Prep students have grown leaps and bounds and it’s been a complete pleasure seeing
how they have blossomed in all areas of English. There was a great deal of emphasis put on
oral work this year, as studies show students who are able to articulate their thoughts orally
are better able to write. Through show-and-tell, role play and storytime students’ vocabulary
really flourished. They gained the confidence to speak in front of an audience, to become
articulate and to formulate their opinions. They then learned to transfer their thoughts and
ideas onto paper for the first time.

Students’ reading really took off, with a great number of students reading well above class
level. This has been a team-effort, which included our teachers of course, but it could not
have been possible without parents who have supported an environment of reading at
home.

Our number one aim in reading, above and beyond everything else, has been to make sure
students love to do it. The enthusiasm students showed for Pajama Day, Wacky Wednesday
and Reading Month was just heart-warming. They continued exploring the library with
Aunty Fizza, and showed eagerness and a sense of responsibility learning how to check out
and care for books.

We honestly feel this strong foundation and love for reading is going to give a firm base for
the students to carry on and succeed as life-long learners. Please continue to foster this love
through the summer. Visiting the bookstore together is a great summer memory to create,
choosing book s together and discussing favourite ones. Attached is a list of books to read
out loud to your child, and one of books that they can read by themselves.

Wishing you a wonderful, book-filled summer!

Sincerely,
Rishm Najm
Literacy Coordinator

CLASS PREP SUMMER READING HOMEWORK

As part of the summer homework, we would like to have parents read aloud with the
students. While reading practice helps children learn to decode words, being read out
loud to help:

*Increase comprehension skills

*Develop writing skills
*Build confidence
*Improve speaking skills
*Increase vocabulary

Questions to Ask When Reading Aloud With Children:

Before Starting the Book:

 What do you think this book is going to be about?

 What story clues are in the title and the pictures?

While Reading the Book:

 What do you think is going to happen next?
 What does the character want?
 Do you think she will get it? How do you think she will get it?
 Why do you think the character did that? If you were in that situation, what would
you do?
 How will the story most likely end?

After Completing the Book:

 How did the story make you feel?

 What do you like or dislike about the text/story?
 Which character did you like best? Why?
 If you were the illustrator what pictures would you have drawn?

The Rhyme Game

by Guy Belleranti

Bella and James sat on the grass.

“Let’s play the rhyme game,” Bella

said. “First, you say a word. Then, I’ll say a
word that rhymes.”

James nodded. “Truck,” he said.

“Duck,” Bella rhymed.

“House,” James said.

“Mouse,” Bella rhymed.

“Dog,” James said.

“Frog,” Bella rhymed.

“Can I do the rhyming now?” James asked.

“Yes,” Bella said.

“Dress,” James rhymed.

Bella laughed. “Wait. Yes wasn’t my word. Here it is now.”

“Cow,” James rhymed.

“No,” Bella said, laughing harder. “No, no, no.”

“Go.” James rhymed. “Go, go, go.”

Bella laughed so hard she rolled on the grass.

James rolled next to her. Rhyming was fun!
