1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Overview
This document briefly explains the concepts that are used in the production of the Operating
Interface of the automation systems developed by Allottware.
The SCADA system used is SIMATIC WinCC from Siemens.
1.2 RA Add-On for WinCC
The main screen navigation and faceplates are built using an add-on package for WinCC.
This package is developed by Allottware and is provided totally free of charge. It can be
installed and used by anyone on any WinCC project. The package is not required on the
WinCC runtime systems – it is simply a productivity tool that simplifies certain configuration
tasks within WinCC. The project created by the add-on contains only standard WinCC
objects and is thus completely compatible with other WinCC options such as the WinCC
WebNavigator and DataMonitor.

2.4 Mimic Navigator
If you click on the main picture title bar in runtime you will get a drop-down list of all the
pictures in the project. Simply select the picture to open it in the main window.
These three buttons control the automatic slide-show function. This can be used to
automatically change the mimic that is displayed, for example to cycle through critical plant
sections that the operators must monitor frequently.
From left to right:
Play – this starts the slide show
Stop – this stops the slide show
Close – this closes the navigator window

2.5 Mimic Layout
Mimics are typically laid out with a top-left to bottom-right flow, as in the P&I drawings.
Click on the directional link arrows to jump to the previous or next mimic in the process
flow:

2.6 Help Page
Click the Help button to display the system help file:
For projects with complex operational interfaces an integrated help file can be included.
This is a standard HTML file that is accessible directly within the WinCC project.
This could also be linked to a internet or intranet web site that already exists within your
organization.

3 DEVICES & FACEPLATES
3.1 Devices
The controls and diagnostic information of any device is found in the device “faceplate”.
Clicking on the device symbol typically opens the device faceplate.
Basic device status information:
Icon Description
Device is switched off / not running
Device is running
Device fault
The following icons may appear on the faceplate or with the device symbol in the mimic:
Icon Description
Device is not available / switched off at MCC panel
Device E-Stop circuit not healthy
Start/Run interlocks are preventing the device from operating
Local Control Mode is selected (device is operated at the local
control desk)
Manual Control Mode is selected (device is operated manually
from the HMI)
Device is being simulated (running feedback signal)

3.2 Device Status Examples
Icon Description
Device unavailable (switched off at MCC)
Device running in local control mode
Device running in manual mode
Device running feedback is being simulated (its not really running)
Device is faulty
3.3 Analog Values
Typical analog value display with units of measure and tag description.
3.4 Controllers
Typical PID Controller with setpoint (blue) and process value (green). The SP and PV are
also shown in the bar graph, along with the controller output value (orange).

3.5 Example Faceplate
The following example is taken from the RA Demo Project. The faceplate is for a simple
Analog Input device type, named “RA_AI”.
General status indication for the device Trend page for the current value
Filtered alarm page Notes that can be edited and saved
HTML help file can be added to describe the
functionality of the faceplate.

4 ALARMING
4.1 Hierarchical Alarm Navigation
Alarms are arranged to create a hierarchical alarm navigation menu.
This makes it easy to navigate through the menu to the plant area affected by current alarm
activity: drill down following the flashing icons on the menu buttons until you get to the
relevant picture.

4.2 Loop-in-Alarm
Loop-in-Alarm is a standard WinCC alarm logging function that allows you to open a picture
or faceplate for the selected alarm. Select the alarm in the alarm-logging list and click on the
loop-in-alarm button on the alarm control toolbar:
Loop-in-Alarm tool button
The faceplate for the device
that triggered the alarm is
opened up when the alarm
is selected in the alarm list
and the loop-in-alarm button
is pressed.
This allows you to view and control individual devices by linking to them from the alarm list,
without having to switch between the alarm list and the mimics.

4.3 Audible Alarms (Horn)
WinCC V6.0 makes it very simple to configure audible alarms. When a certain alarm is
triggered the system will write a tag to the PLC to sound a physical horn, or the PC will play
a sound file through the computer speaker.
In runtime when an alarm is triggered the selected sound file will be played.
The “Horn” button flashes red. Click this button to acknowledge alarms and silence the horn
or sound file.

5 SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONS
5.1 Templates
Several pre-built templates are available with various arrangements of fixed or drop-down
menus and screen sizes:

5.2 Split-Screen Configurations
It is possible to use split-screen configurations if your video system connects to multiple
monitors.
The most common configuration is to have two screens side by side. Each screen operates
independently – you can select different mimics and open different faceplates on each screen.

5.3 WinCC Web Navigator
Demo project with faceplates, trending & alarming all published to the web
The projects are all compatible with the WinCC WebNavigator and DataMonitor option –
including the display of faceplates with device-filtered trend pages.
