2 a) What is Plane strain and Plane stress problems? Explain with an example. [8]
b) What is the importance of boundary condition for solving the elasticity

3 a) Explain in detail about saint venant principle. [8]


b) Write the solution of bi-harmonic equation using Fourier series. [7]

4 a) Describe the solution of bi-harmonic equation for axial symmetry. [7]


b) Derive the expression for the stresses in a curved bar of rectangular section
with inner radius ‘a’ and outer radius ‘b’ and of unit thickness when it is
subjected to bending moment M. [8]

5 a) Describe the various types of dynamic loads acting on the structures and its
characteristics. [8]
b) An oscillating system with a natural frequency of 6Hz start with an initial
amplitude of 1.52cm and initial velocity of 22cm per sec. calculate (i) Natural
frequency (ii) Natural period (iii) Amplitude of vibration (iv) Velocity
(v) Acceleration (vi) Phase angle (vii) Time at first peak. [7]

6 a) Derive an expression for logarithmic decrement. [7]


b) A vibrating system consists of a mass 6.2 kg spring of stiffness 120 N/m and
frequency with damping coefficient of 5N-s/m. determine (i) the damping
factor (ii) natural frequency of the damped vibration, (iii) Logarithmic
decrement (iv) the ratio of two successive amplitudes (v) the number of
cycles after which the initial amplitude is reduced to 25%. [8]

7 a) Derive an expression for undamped forced vibration of single degree of


freedom system. [8]
b) An electric motor of total weight of 4 KN is mounted on a simply supported
beam with overhand at a distance of 2.2m from its centre. An unbalance of
the rotor is 25 kg-m. Find the amplitude of vertical vibration of motor for
speed 800rpm. [7]

8 a) Discuss about the response of a system under general loading using Duhamel
integral. [8]
b) Using impulse triangular loading obtain the expression for dynamic load
factor. [7]
