Chapter 5 How To Show Relief On Maps

This document discusses methods for showing relief on maps. It describes colouring land areas by elevation, using contour lines of equal height, and placing spot heights and trigonometric stations to label specific elevations. Examples are given of these methods on maps of Mount Parker and Hong Kong, and questions are included about reading elevations from the contour maps.

2 Contouring
Contouring is the most common method to show relief on maps.
It uses contour lines to join spots with the same height in order to
describe the relief of land.

1 a. The highest hill in the figure is Tai Mo Shan , with a height of

957 m, which is shown by a (spot height / trigonometric station).

b. Apart from the answer in Question 1a, identify three other hills which are above 700m in the figure. In
the table below, write down their names and heights, and circle the ways that the heights are shown.

Lantau Island

3 Where are the lowlands mainly distributed in Hong Kong?

The northwestern part of the New Territories and along the coasts of the Victoria Harbour.

4 Describe the relief of Hong Kong.

The relief of Hong Kong is (hilly with few flatlands / flat with few hills).

For the spots lying between two contour lines, we can only estimate
their heights. Since C is found between the contour lines of 150m and
200m, we can use the following methods to estimate its height.
