Equilibrium and Elasticity Guide

Jeremiah Juevesano
June 1, 2021

1 Introduction
This will be your guide in engaging the concept in equilibrium and elasticity.
Here, I will provide questions that you will be answering and I’ll be grading it as
your quiz and seatwork. You can refer your answer from the University Physics
Book I provided last time.
(1) Why is it important to deal with the concept of Static Equilibrium?

2 Conditions for Equilibrium

(2) What are the conditions for Equilibrium and their implications?

Figure 1: (3) Which system depicts an equilibrium system? and why?

3 Center of Gravity (CoG)

(4) What is center of gravity? (5) What is gravitational torque? (6) When is
center of gravity identical to its center of mass? (7) How to find for the center of
gravity?. (8) What will happen if a system’s CoG is outside the area of support?

Note: Just be familiar for University Physics Chapter 11 Example 11.1 Walking
the plank.

4 Solving Rigid-Body Equilibrium Problems

Be familiar with Example 11.2.

1
(9) Do a solution re-echo of Example 11.3. (Note that the lever arm for the
ladder and Lancelot’s weights are taken from their position multiplied by cosine
of 53.1 degree.) Solve for Problem 11.10 in university Physics book. (10) Provide
the definition and/or mathematical description/formula of the following:
• Stress (Tensile, Bulk, Shear)
• Strain (Tensile, Bulk, Shear)
• Elastic Modulus (Tensile, Bulk, Shear)

5 Elasticity and Modulu

(11) When will plastic deformation happen?
