The parts with the part number starting with "S" are sold as maintenance parts or consumable
parts. Those with the part number not starting with "S" are not sold individually.
! CAUTION
It is necessary to set each parameter before pressing the [Start GC].
Be sure to read the GC-2010 Plus instruction manual before starting the analyzer.
When using BID, use the BID exclusively for the detector on one analysis line.
Detector splitting is not supported as the BID uses a different flow measurement methods from
other detectors.
2. Press the [DET] key, press [Det Gas] in the PF menu, and check that the sweep gas is
flowing at around 5 to 10 mL/min in the displayed screen. Leave for more than 10 minutes
and then replace the gas. If for some reason the sweep gas supply has been stopped,
leave for longer than usual and wait until the gas in the piping has been completely
replaced.
The sweep gas is set by the Shimadzu engineer or specified service company field engineer
when the equipment is installed. To adjust the sweep gas flow rate, refer to "3.6 Setting the
Flow Rate of Detector Gases".
3. Insert the power plug of the "PURE HE ASSY" attached to the rear of the GC-2010 Plus
into a power socket.
! CAUTION
Before plugging in the power plug, allow helium to flow for more
than 10 minutes to ensure that the gas inside the system has been
completely replaced.
If the power plug is inserted when the gas purity inside the "PURE HE
ASSY" is still low before replacement is complete, the filter may become
saturated and require replacement.
Care is also required when replacing the gas in areas such as the piping
if the sweep gas supply has been stopped for some reason. Ensure that
the gas inside the system is completely replaced by measures such as
allowing the gas to flow for longer than usual before inserting the power
plug.
The "PURE HE ASSY" is a consumable item.
4. Press the [DET] key and check that the BID device controller is [Off] in the displayed
screen.
5. Press the [Start GC] key on the [SYSTEM] screen to start the controls.
7. Open the [DET] screen, change the BID detector control to [On], and press the [Enter] key.
8. Press [Det Gas] in the PF menu, change the flow control in the displayed screen to [On]
and set the flow of the detector gas (DCG: DisCharge Gas) to 50 mL/min.
9. Press [Return] in the PF menu, and press the [PlasmaON] key in the detector screen PF
menu.
When the "Start lighting" message is displayed followed by the "Lighting on" message,
lighting is complete.
10. When the baseline has stabilized, press the [Zero Adj] key in the [MONIT] screen to
perform zero point adjustment.
! WARNING
High temperature
Risk of burns. Check that the temperature of each part is below 50 °C before
starting the work.
! CAUTION
Do not turn the screws when they are still hot.
Do not turn screws when they are still hot in order to prevent searing.
The type of glass insert differs depending on the type of injection port used and injection mode.
Check that;
the selected type of insert matches the sample injection mode,
the silica wall is set correctly, and
the glass insert O-ring has not degraded.
Split Split-less
Replace the septum after approximately 100 injections. (Replace after approximately 50 injections
when a gas-tight syringe is used.)
Air entering the injection port when changing the septum or insert can cause the baseline to become
unstable. Wait around an hour after starting the system until the baseline stabilizes.
Changing the insertion length of the capillary columns affects the sensitivity and signal linearity.
Use a thoroughly conditioned column to prevent BID contamination.
If using a new graphite ferrule when replacing the column, heat it with a source such as a gas
burner before using it to attach the column.
Change the graphite fixing position on the injection port side to 15 mm if performing split-less
analysis using a wide bore column with a 0.53 mm bore.
BID side
74 mm
Injection port side
34 mm
Graphite ferrule
Capillary column
Be sure to seal the detector if removing the column from the detector side when setting or supplying the
detector gas flow. If the BID is in a line, the column temperature can only be increased if the detector
temperature is higher than the column temperature, as the contamination prevention function stops the
column from reaching a higher temperature than the detector. If you want to increase the column
temperature without increasing the detector temperature, you will need to remove the detector from the
line.
The same analysis method as other detectors cannot be used because the flow rate
calculation method for this detector differs from that used with other detectors. (The same
line speed and flow rate are not obtained for the same pressure.)
If BID and a different detector are both connected to the same line, calculate the flow rate
according to BID.
If the split ratio is low (total flow rate less than 10 mL/min), background noise from the
injection port may increase. Set the split ratio and total flow rate to larger settings.
If a large amount of a high-concentration substance is detected and sufficient separation
cannot be done, decrease the amount injected by measures such as adjusting the split ratio,
or change the column temperature or flow conditions.
For split-less analysis, fluctuations occur in the baseline soon after the set sampling time has
passed. This is because the background from the injection port fluctuates due to the split
ratio. It is not a malfunction.
For detailed procedures, refer to section "12. Injection Port" in the GC-2010 Plus Instruction
Manual (CD-ROM version).
1. Press the [DET] key to display the Detector condition settings screen. If a different detector
is displayed when multiple detectors are connected, press [Next Det] in the PF menu to
display BID.
2. Press [Det Gas] in the PF menu to display the detector gas flow settings screen.
2. Press the [DET] key and then press [Det Gas] in the PF menu to display the detector gas
flow rate settings, and switch the detector gas control OFF using PF menu [ON/OFF].
3. If the column is connected to BID, remove the column and stopper and seal the BID. The
BID can be stoppered and sealed by attaching a graphite ferrule for capillary column
connection that still contains the core using a split nut in the same way as a column.
5. While checking the flow rate on the detector gas flow rate setting screen, turn the PURE
HE ASSY adjustment knob on the back of the GC to adjust the flow rate. Adjust the flow
rate to one substantially lower (5 to 10 mL/min) than the discharge gas flow rate for
analysis (recommended value for capillary analysis 50 mL/min).
Adjustment knob
An APC error will occur if the flow rate is set to a value higher than the discharge gas flow
rate that is controlled by APC.
The sweep gas supply needs to be turned off when performing APC calibration.
Perform calibration after either turning off the main cylinder valve or turning off the sweep
gas by rotating the PURE HE ASSY adjustment knob when the column is detached.
Around 5 to 10 mL/min of helium gas is consumed due to sweep gas flowing constantly even
when the system is off or the gas chromatograph is not powered, to protect the PURE HE
ASSY, keep the detector stabilized and reduce stabilization time when the detector is started.
Make sure to close the gas tap if you do not use the BID for a long time and want to turn off
the sweep gas supply.
Also, be sure to pull out the "PURE HE ASSY" power plug on the back of the GC at least one
hour before turning off the helium gas supply.
! CAUTION
When stopping the supply of sweep gas for any reason, always pull
out the "PURE HE ASSY" power plug on the back of the GC at least
one hour before stopping the gas supply.
If the power plug is removed and low purity gas enters the "PURE HE
ASSY" within one hour, the filter becomes saturated and requires
replacement.
The "PURE HE ASSY" is a consumable item.
! CAUTION
Before starting the BID, replace all of the air inside the cell with carrier gas
or detector gas.
To prevent damage to the BID cell, set the start time so that the air inside the BID
cell is completely replaced with carrier gas or detector gas before the temperature
is raised to the detection temperature.
Increasing the temperature of the column oven or injection port before replacing
the gas can damage the BID cell. Set the temperature to around room temperature
before startup.
Set each of the parameters for GC startup, and press [Start GC] in the PF menu to start GC and
start the heating control and gas control of the various sections.
BID control does not start unless the detector control is ON.
For detailed procedures, refer to section "7. Starting and Stopping the GC [SYSTEM]" in the
GC-2010 Plus Instruction Manual (CD-ROM version).
Set the detector temperature to 150 °C or higher when using. Using at a temperature lower
than 150 °C can cause water vapor and air to build up, causing the baseline to become
unstable.
Using at a detector temperature higher than 320 °C for extended periods of time can shorten
the life of the detector.
A temperature that is between 150 °C and 300 °C and does not exceed the maximum usable
temperature of the column is recommended. Setting a high detector temperature when
analyzing oxidized gases containing a large amount of oxygen can also shorten the life of the
detector. A detector temperature of approximately 160 °C is recommended in this case.
Decreasing the detector temperature is also recommended if not using the BID.
If a polyimide capillary column is used for the outer covering, some types of polyimides can
cause noise or tailing if the detector temperature is higher than 300 °C, due to carbonization
of the polyimide on the surface of the column inserted in the detector.
In such cases, tailing can be removed by cutting the section inserted into the detector, but it
is recommended that the detector temperature be reduced.
It is not necessary to reduce the detector temperature below 300 °C when columns that
contain highly heat-resistant polyimids or SUS capillaries are used.
2. Check that the detector temperature is the same as the set value.
When lighting the BID, always check that the detector temperature is sufficiently high (over
150 °C).
If BID is lit when the detector temperature is below 150 °C, cyclical changes in the baseline,
reduced sensitivity or malfunction may occur.
! CAUTION
Do not light before the detector is at high temperature.
Doing so may result in cyclical changes in the baseline, reduced
sensitivity or malfunction.
4. Press the [Det Gas] key in the PF menu, set the type of gas and flow rate, and turn the
detector gas control On.
Recommended detector gas flow settings are as follows.
Column Flow Detector Gas Flow (Recommended)
Less than 10 mL/min 50 mL/min
10 to 15 mL/min 70 mLmin
15 mL/min or greater 100 mL/min
5. Press [Return] in the PF menu to display the detector screen, and press [PlasmaON] in the
detector screen PF menu. The "Start lighting" message is displayed at the bottom left of
the screen, and the lighting operation starts.
6. When the lighting operation completes normally, the "Lighting on" message is displayed at
the bottom left of the screen, the BID icon lights in the MONIT screen, and the plasma item
in the DET screen changes to [On].
If lighting fails, the message "DET#1(-4) Plasma on failed" is displayed at the bottom left of the
screen, and the lighting operation ends. If the error message is displayed, see "6 Troubleshooting".
Press [Return] in the PD menu, and press the [PlasmaON] key in the detector screen PF menu.
7. If the BID is selected in a line and the BID detector control and detector gas control are on
when the gas chromatograph is started, the lighting operation starts automatically after the
detector reaches the set temperature.
This is unrelated to the automatic lighting setting in the gas chromatograph startup process.
Automatic lighting does not happen if the BID detector control and detector gas control are
changed to On after starting the system, even if the BID is set in a line.
Press [PlasmaON] in the PF menu on the BID screen.
1. Set the chromatomonitor screen full scale for the GCsolution or LabSolutions (digital
signal) to 6.4 x 104 μV, and check that the baseline stabilizes without scaling out and
becomes horizontal. Set the attenuation to 3 (23) for Chromatopak (analog signal).
Stabilized baseline
2. If the baseline does not stabilize as shown in the figure below or scales out, refer to
"6 Troubleshooting".
Noise Wandering
(Negative) drift
Zero Adjustment
Press the GC [MONIT] key, press [Zero Adj] in the PF menu or use the [Zero Adjustment] function in
GCsolution or LabSolutions to set the signal output to 0 μV.
If the Chromatopak display does not return to 0 μV even when zero adjustment is performed on the
GC side, perform additional zero adjustment on the Chromatopak side. For details, refer to "4.7 Zero
Adjustment".
The zero adjustment function on GCsolution and LabSolutions is the same function as the GC unit, but
the Chromatopak zero adjustment function does not adjust the detector output signal. Always perform
zero adjustment on the GC unit.
1. Press the [System] key while the system is running, and select [Stop GC] in the PF menu
of the displayed screen.
The system stop operation is executed according to the stop time and flow off time set
beforehand.
Do not remove the power plug of the "PURE HE ASSY" attached to the rear of the GC-2010 Plus
from the power socket. Sweep gas is supplied at a rate of approximately 10 mL/min in the GC
stopped state in order to protect the PURE HE ASSY parts and keep the equipment stabilized.
To stop the sweep gas supply, follow the instructions in "3.6 Setting the Flow Rate of Detector
Gases" to turn the sweep gas OFF after removing the PURE HE ASSY power plug and waiting for
at least an hour.
! CAUTION
When stopping the supply of sweep gas for any reason, always pull out
the "PURE HE ASSY" power plug on the back of the GC at least one hour
before stopping the gas supply.
If the power plug is removed and low purity gas enters the "PURE HE ASSY"
within one hour, the filter becomes saturated and requires replacement.
The "PURE HE ASSY" is a consumable item.
For details on stopping the GC, refer to the GC-2010 Plus instruction manual (CD-ROM version).
To restart the equipment, follow the procedures in "3.7 System Startup".
It is possible to keep the inside of the cells and detector gas flow path clean by constantly
supplying sweep gas to detector cells even when the BID is unused (for example, if the system is
off or the gas chromatograph is not powered). A continuous sweep gas supply of around 5 to 10
mL/min is needed to reduce the restarting time.
Around 5 to 10 mL/min of helium gas is consumed due to sweep gas flowing constantly even
when the system is off or the gas chromatograph is not powered, to protect the PURE HE ASSY,
keep the detector stabilized and reduce stabilization time when the detector is started.
Make sure to close the gas tap if you do not use the BID for a long time and want to turn off the
sweep gas supply. Follow the steps and cautions in "3.6.2 Sweep Gas" when stopping the sweep
gas.
! CAUTION
When stopping the supply of sweep gas for any reason, always pull out the
"PURE HE ASSY" power plug on the back of the GC at least one hour before
stopping the gas supply.
If the power plug is removed and low purity gas enters the "PURE HE ASSY"
within one hour, the filter becomes saturated and requires replacement.
The "PURE HE ASSY" is a consumable item.
Set the detector temperature to 150 °C or higher when using. Using at a temperature lower than
150 °C can cause the baseline to become unstable.
Using at a detector temperature higher than 320 °C for extended periods of time can shorten the
life of the detector.
A temperature that is between 150 °C and 300 °C and does not exceed the maximum usable

Decreasing the detector temperature is also recommended if not using the BID.
If a polyimide capillary column is used for the outer covering, some types of polyimides can cause
tailing if the detector temperature is higher than 300 °C, due to carbonization of the polyimide on
the column surface inserted in the detector. Cutting the section inserted in the detector can stop
this tailing, but lowering the detector temperature is recommended. The temperature does not
need to be set below 300 °C if using a highly heat resistant polyimide column or SUS capillary.
Temp (°C)
Setting range: 0.0 to 350.0 °C; default setting: 25.0 °C
Set the detector temperature. Usually set the temperature slightly (final temperature + around 20 °C)
higher than the column oven temperature (final temperature of progressive temperature increase) to
prevent substances with a high boiling point from sticking to the inside of the detector.
See "16.6.4 Setting the maximum temperature limits" under "16.6 GC Configuration" in the GC-2010
Plus Instruction Manual (CD-ROM Version) for information on setting the maximum temperature.
Set the detector temperature to 150 °C or higher when using. Using at a temperature lower than
150 °C can cause the baseline to become unstable.
Using at a detector temperature higher than 320 °C for extended periods of time can shorten the
life of the detector.
A temperature that is between 150 °C and 300 °C and does not exceed the maximum usable
temperature of the column is recommended. Setting a high detector temperature when analyzing
oxidized gases containing a large amount of oxygen can also shorten the life of the detector. A
detector temperature of approximately 160 °C is recommended in this case.
Plasma
Settings: On/Off; default setting: Off (plasma is always lit automatically after starting the gas
chromatograph. This setting changes to "On" when the plasma is lit.)
This setting changes to "On" when the plasma is lit and "Off" when it is not.
See "13.5 Setting the Output Signals" in the GC-2010 Plus Instruction Manual (CD-ROM Version)
for details on detector signal output, background saving, background compensation and detector
signal subtraction.
Signal Range
Settings: x1, x10-1, x10-2, x10-3, x10-4; default setting: x10-1
Analog signals are output as x10-X if the analog signal type is Linear.
Change the setting if the maximum signal input value of the data processor is exceeded and "E"
(Error) is displayed as the peak mark, for example from x1 to x10-1 or from x10-2 to x10-3.
Digital signals are always output as x1, regardless of the setting.
Signal Attenuation
Settings: x1, x2-1, x2-2, x2-3, x2-4; default setting: x2-1
Analog signals are output as 2-X if the analog signal type is Wide.
Change the setting if the maximum signal input value of the data processor is exceeded and "E"
(Error) is displayed as the peak mark, for example from x1 to x2-1 or from x2-2 to x2-3.
Digital signals are always output as x1, regardless of the setting.
Wide
Use this setting when connecting to the C-R8A, C-R7A or C-R7A plus using the standard accessory
wide range signal cable.
The signal from the gas chromatograph is raised to the one-half power when output and squared
when displayed after being input into the chromatopack.
Perform a calibration with the detector signal output set to off when connecting to the C-R8A, C-R7A
or C-R7A plus for the first time or when changing the chromatopack. See "2.7 Connecting external
device cables" in the GC-2010 Plus Instruction Manual (CD-ROM Version) for information on
calibration.
Linear
Configure this setting when connecting to chromatopacks other than the C-R8A, C-R7A or C-R7A
plus.
An optional cable (Signal Cable, Linear; part no. S221-47251-42) is required for linear signal
connections to the C-R8A, C-R7A or C-R7A plus.
Wide range calibration does not need to be performed for linear connections.

2. Press [Det Gas] in the PF menu to display the detector gas settings screen.
3. Set the detector gas flow between 20 and 100 mL/min (around 5 to 30 kPa).
Recommended detector gas flow settings are as follows.
Column Flow Detector Gas Flow (Recommended)
Less than 10 mL/min 50 mL/min
10 to 15 mL/min 70 mL/min
15 mL/min or greater 100 mL/min
It is possible to keep the inside of the cells and detector gas flow path clean by constantly
supplying sweep gas to detector cells even when the BID is unused (for example, if the system is
off or the gas chromatograph is not powered). A continuous sweep gas supply of around 5 to 10
mL/min is needed to reduce the restarting time.
Around 5 to 10 mL/min of helium gas is consumed due to sweep gas flowing constantly even when
the system is off or the gas chromatograph is not powered, to protect the PURE HE ASSY, keep
the detector stabilized and reduce stabilization time when the detector is started.
Make sure to close the gas tap if you do not use the BID for a long time and want to turn off the
sweep gas supply. Follow the steps and cautions in "3.6.2 Sweep Gas" when stopping the sweep
gas.
1. Select the detector you want to set the zero point of in the Monitor Main screen.
Press the [MONIT] key to display the main screen. If the BID is not displayed in the screen,
press [Chng Line] and select the line where the BID is installed.
See "9. Monitoring the GC" in the GC-2010 Plus Instruction Manual (CD-ROM version) for
details on the Monitor screen. (Press the toggle key if [Chng Line] is not displayed in the
PF menu.)
While zero adjustment in GCsolution and LabSolutions is the same function as with the gas
chromatograph, performing zero adjustment on the chromatopack does not adjust the output signal of the
detector.
Make sure to perform zero adjustment on the gas chromatograph itself.
