! WARNING
 Be sure to use in a well ventilated location.
Use in a badly ventilated location may cause oxygen deficiency to occur due to the
gas used in the system.
 Connect this system to an appropriate voltage and frequency power supply.
Failure to do so may result in fire or electric shock. Furthermore, the system may
not operate to its full potential if the power voltage is unstable or there is
insufficient electrical power capacity.
 The system weighs 6.5 kg.
When installing the system, consider the combined weight of this system
and all other associated devices, and be sure to install the system in a flat,
stable location that can support the combined weight of the devices.
Failure to do so may result in the system overturning or falling from its installation
location.
 Install the necessary safety devices against overturning in case of an
earthquake, etc.
Failure to do so may result in the system overturning or falling from its installation
location.
 Be sure to ground the system.
Failure to do so may result in damage or short circuit. This is also important to
ensure stable operation of the system.
 Insert the power cord into an easy to reach power socket.
The power cord needs to be removed from the power socket in an emergency.
 Insert the power plug fully into the power socket.
If the power plug is not inserted fully into the power socket, fire may occur due to
heat generated by electric shocks or bad contacts.
 To prevent fires caused by the so-called tracking phenomenon, periodically
(at least once every 6 months) use a dry cloth to wipe away any dust
accumulated on the power plug.
 If the power cable becomes too hot to touch by hand, the electric current is
exceeding the rated current.
Stop using the system immediately, remove the plug from the power socket and
contact Shimadzu for repairs.
 If the power switches on and off when the power cable is moved, there is a
broken power wire inside the power cord.
Stop using the system immediately, remove the plug from the power socket and
contact Shimadzu for repairs.

*What is the tracking phenomenon?

When a plug is left inserted in a socket for an extended period of time, dust accumulates between
the plug and socket. If humidity is added to this dust, sparks can repeatedly be discharged between
the power plug pins.
This heat causes the insulated part of the power socket to overheat and deteriorate, which allows
electric current to flow between plug pins, causing fire.

iv BID-2010 Plus Instruction Manual

1 Outline
The BID-2010 Plus is a detector for the Shimadzu GC-2010 Plus Gas Chromatograph.
A gas chromatograph is an analysis system used to conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis.

1.1 Principle of the Barrier Discharge Ionization

Detector (BID)
The Barrier Discharge Ionization Detector is constructed of two main sections, the plasma
generation section and collector section. The plasma generation section contains three electrodes,
and generates non-equilibrium plasma from the electrical discharge of the dielectric barrier by
applying high voltage to the central electrode.
The metastable condition of the helium generated from the non-equilibrium plasma ionizes the
sample using the photon energy emitted when it returns to the ground state. These ions are
accumulated and amplified by the collector, and are output as a voltage value to the Chromatopak or
computer.
Gases other than neon which has a higher ionization potential than helium can be ionized because
the electrical excitation energy of the helium metastable condition is exceptionally high.
The inner wall of the plasma generation section suffers very little wear and remains stable over long
periods because the neutral gas temperature of the non-equilibrium plasma generated by the
dielectric barrier discharge is exceptionally low, and because the electrode is protected by the stable
dielectric substance (fused quartz).

3 Basic Operation
3.1 Introduction
This section describes the basic operational procedures of BID-2010 Plus. For detailed operations of
the GC-2010 Plus, refer to the GC-2010 Plus instruction manual.
However, this manual contains an example of connecting the BID-2010 Plus to line 2 and outputting
the detector signal output to channel 2. Replace the line or output channel number to add to a
different line or output the detector signal output to a different channel.

! CAUTION
It is necessary to set each parameter before pressing the [Start GC].
Be sure to read the GC-2010 Plus instruction manual before starting the analyzer.

When using BID, use the BID exclusively for the detector on one analysis line.
Detector splitting is not supported as the BID uses a different flow measurement methods from
other detectors.

1. Switch the GC unit power on.

2. Press the [DET] key, press [Det Gas] in the PF menu, and check that the sweep gas is
flowing at around 5 to 10 mL/min in the displayed screen. Leave for more than 10 minutes
and then replace the gas. If for some reason the sweep gas supply has been stopped,
leave for longer than usual and wait until the gas in the piping has been completely
replaced.

The sweep gas is set by the Shimadzu engineer or specified service company field engineer
when the equipment is installed. To adjust the sweep gas flow rate, refer to "3.6 Setting the
Flow Rate of Detector Gases".

3. Insert the power plug of the "PURE HE ASSY" attached to the rear of the GC-2010 Plus
into a power socket.

! CAUTION
Before plugging in the power plug, allow helium to flow for more
than 10 minutes to ensure that the gas inside the system has been
completely replaced.
If the power plug is inserted when the gas purity inside the "PURE HE
ASSY" is still low before replacement is complete, the filter may become
saturated and require replacement.
Care is also required when replacing the gas in areas such as the piping
if the sweep gas supply has been stopped for some reason. Ensure that
the gas inside the system is completely replaced by measures such as
allowing the gas to flow for longer than usual before inserting the power
plug.
The "PURE HE ASSY" is a consumable item.

3.2 Gas Used

3.2 Gas Used

The BID is a highly sensitive detector, and even minute impurities in the carrier gas can cause the
baseline to become unstable. Always use gases that exceed the following purity levels for the carrier
gas and detector gas.
This unit also includes expendable parts that remove impurities from the carrier gas and detector
gas.
It is recommended that these parts be replaced if the baseline becomes unstable.
Contact your Shimadzu representative for replacements. (Charges apply)
The "PURE HE ASSY" should be replaced approximately every 6 months if helium gas that exceeds
the indicated purity level (99.9999 %) is used at 100 mL/min and a high purity level is maintained in
the helium line by allowing sweep gas to flow at 5 to 10 mL/min when the system is stopped. (Please
note that this is a guide only and not a guarantee.) The life of the "PURE HE ASSY" is shortened
dramatically if air is allowed to enter by using gas with a low purity level, impurities or leaks in the
pipe, entry of air into the helium line when changing the gas cylinder, or stopping the sweep gas.

3 Basic Operation

3.3 Checking the Glass Insert and Injection Port Septum

The BID-2010 Plus can detect substances such as water and air with high sensitivity, meaning that
existing leaks or impurities in the injection port can cause a large amount of noise or wandering.
Change the septum and glass insert frequently.
For detailed procedures, refer to section "12. Injection Port" in the GC-2010 Plus Instruction Manual
(CD-ROM version).

! WARNING
High temperature
Risk of burns. Check that the temperature of each part is below 50 °C before
starting the work.

! CAUTION
Do not turn the screws when they are still hot.
Do not turn screws when they are still hot in order to prevent searing.

The type of glass insert differs depending on the type of injection port used and injection mode.
Check that;
 the selected type of insert matches the sample injection mode,
 the silica wall is set correctly, and
 the glass insert O-ring has not degraded.

Split Split-less

Replace the septum after approximately 100 injections. (Replace after approximately 50 injections
when a gas-tight syringe is used.)

Air entering the injection port when changing the septum or insert can cause the baseline to become
unstable. Wait around an hour after starting the system until the baseline stabilizes.

3.4 Mounting the Column

3.4 Mounting the Column

For detailed procedures, refer to section "4. Installing the Column" in the GC-2010 Plus Instruction
Manual (CD-ROM version).
Fix the graphite ferrule on the detector side at the position (74 mm) shown in the following figure.
Use the provided graphite fixing bracket for BID (P/N S221-41532-02) to fix in the position shown in
the figure.

 Changing the insertion length of the capillary columns affects the sensitivity and signal linearity.
 Use a thoroughly conditioned column to prevent BID contamination.
 If using a new graphite ferrule when replacing the column, heat it with a source such as a gas
burner before using it to attach the column.
 Change the graphite fixing position on the injection port side to 15 mm if performing split-less
analysis using a wide bore column with a 0.53 mm bore.

BID-2010 Plus Instruction Manual 9

3 Basic Operation

 Conditioning the Column

The BID is highly sensitive with a low level of selectiveness, meaning that liquid phase steam flowing
from the column is also detected with high sensitivity. The column used for the BID therefore needs
to be sufficiently conditioned before connecting.
If there is a possibility that large amounts of a substance will flow from the column, attach the
column to the injection port side only (do not connect to the detector side), allow carrier gas to flow
through, and perform sufficient aging at a temperature that does not exceed the maximum usable
temperature of the column. Please take care, however, as performing more aging than necessary
can decrease the amount of liquid phase, which may affect separation.

Be sure to seal the detector if removing the column from the detector side when setting or supplying the
detector gas flow. If the BID is in a line, the column temperature can only be increased if the detector
temperature is higher than the column temperature, as the contamination prevention function stops the
column from reaching a higher temperature than the detector. If you want to increase the column
temperature without increasing the detector temperature, you will need to remove the detector from the
line.

3.5 Setting the Flow Rate

3.5 Setting the Flow Rate

Press the [FLOW] key and set the carrier gas conditions in the screen that appears.
Firstly, press the [Column] key and set the column information (bore, length, thickness) in the screen
that appears. Next, press the [Return] key, set each of the parameters and press the [Purge] key to
set the purge flow rate.

 The same analysis method as other detectors cannot be used because the flow rate
calculation method for this detector differs from that used with other detectors. (The same
line speed and flow rate are not obtained for the same pressure.)
If BID and a different detector are both connected to the same line, calculate the flow rate
according to BID.
 If the split ratio is low (total flow rate less than 10 mL/min), background noise from the
injection port may increase. Set the split ratio and total flow rate to larger settings.
 If a large amount of a high-concentration substance is detected and sufficient separation
cannot be done, decrease the amount injected by measures such as adjusting the split ratio,
or change the column temperature or flow conditions.
 For split-less analysis, fluctuations occur in the baseline soon after the set sampling time has
passed. This is because the background from the injection port fluctuates due to the split
ratio. It is not a malfunction.

For detailed procedures, refer to section "12. Injection Port" in the GC-2010 Plus Instruction
Manual (CD-ROM version).

3 Basic Operation

3.6 Setting the Flow Rate of Detector Gases

3.6.1 Detector Gases

1. Press the [DET] key to display the Detector condition settings screen. If a different detector
is displayed when multiple detectors are connected, press [Next Det] in the PF menu to
display BID.

2. Press [Det Gas] in the PF menu to display the detector gas flow settings screen.

3. Set the flow rates for the gases.

Recommended detector gas flow settings are as follows.
Column Flow Detector Gas Flow (Recommended)
Less than 10 mL/min 50 mL/min
10 to 15 mL/min 70 mLmin
15 mL/min or greater 100 mL/min

4. Set the detector gas control to On.

Gas flow can be set between 0 and 100 mL/min.

However, the plasma becomes unstable if the gas flow is less than 20 mL/min, causing lighting
to be suspended and a message saying "DCG flow rate is not enough" to be displayed.
Using a flow higher than that recommended decreases sensitivity.
Using a flow lower than that recommended increases sensitivity but causes the following
phenomena:
 Dynamic range wanders and detection on the high-density side becomes difficult, causing
unclear peak.
 Solvents or substances with a high boiling point leave residue or stick to the inside of the
detector, causing operational instability such as baseline wandering and decreased
sensitivity.

3.6 Setting the Flow Rate of Detector Gases

3.6.2 Sweep Gas

Around 5 to 10 mL/min of sweep gas needs to flow through the system constantly even when the
system is off or the gas chromatograph is not powered, to keep the detector stabilized and reduce
stabilization time when the detector is started.
Follow the procedure below to change or adjust the sweep gas flow.

1. Turn the GC power on and turn the system OFF if it is ON.

2. Press the [DET] key and then press [Det Gas] in the PF menu to display the detector gas
flow rate settings, and switch the detector gas control OFF using PF menu [ON/OFF].

3. If the column is connected to BID, remove the column and stopper and seal the BID. The
BID can be stoppered and sealed by attaching a graphite ferrule for capillary column
connection that still contains the core using a split nut in the same way as a column.

4. Open the main valve of the helium gas cylinder.

5. While checking the flow rate on the detector gas flow rate setting screen, turn the PURE
HE ASSY adjustment knob on the back of the GC to adjust the flow rate. Adjust the flow
rate to one substantially lower (5 to 10 mL/min) than the discharge gas flow rate for
analysis (recommended value for capillary analysis 50 mL/min).

Adjustment knob

BID-2010 Plus Instruction Manual 13

3 Basic Operation

 An APC error will occur if the flow rate is set to a value higher than the discharge gas flow
rate that is controlled by APC.
 The sweep gas supply needs to be turned off when performing APC calibration.
Perform calibration after either turning off the main cylinder valve or turning off the sweep
gas by rotating the PURE HE ASSY adjustment knob when the column is detached.
 Around 5 to 10 mL/min of helium gas is consumed due to sweep gas flowing constantly even
when the system is off or the gas chromatograph is not powered, to protect the PURE HE
ASSY, keep the detector stabilized and reduce stabilization time when the detector is started.
Make sure to close the gas tap if you do not use the BID for a long time and want to turn off
the sweep gas supply.
Also, be sure to pull out the "PURE HE ASSY" power plug on the back of the GC at least one
hour before turning off the helium gas supply.

! CAUTION
When stopping the supply of sweep gas for any reason, always pull
out the "PURE HE ASSY" power plug on the back of the GC at least
one hour before stopping the gas supply.
If the power plug is removed and low purity gas enters the "PURE HE
ASSY" within one hour, the filter becomes saturated and requires
replacement.
The "PURE HE ASSY" is a consumable item.

3.7 System Startup

3.7 System Startup

Press the [SYSTEM] key when the GC is in the stopped state to display the GC start sequence
screen.
Set the start time to 10 minutes or longer.

! CAUTION
Before starting the BID, replace all of the air inside the cell with carrier gas
or detector gas.
To prevent damage to the BID cell, set the start time so that the air inside the BID
cell is completely replaced with carrier gas or detector gas before the temperature
is raised to the detection temperature.
Increasing the temperature of the column oven or injection port before replacing
the gas can damage the BID cell. Set the temperature to around room temperature
before startup.

Set each of the parameters for GC startup, and press [Start GC] in the PF menu to start GC and
start the heating control and gas control of the various sections.
BID control does not start unless the detector control is ON.
For detailed procedures, refer to section "7. Starting and Stopping the GC [SYSTEM]" in the
GC-2010 Plus Instruction Manual (CD-ROM version).

3.9 Setting the Detector Temperature

3.9 Setting the Detector Temperature

To set the BID detector temperature, press the [DET] key to display the detector screen.

 Set the detector temperature to 150 °C or higher when using. Using at a temperature lower
than 150 °C can cause water vapor and air to build up, causing the baseline to become
unstable.
 Using at a detector temperature higher than 320 °C for extended periods of time can shorten
the life of the detector.
A temperature that is between 150 °C and 300 °C and does not exceed the maximum usable
temperature of the column is recommended. Setting a high detector temperature when
analyzing oxidized gases containing a large amount of oxygen can also shorten the life of the
detector. A detector temperature of approximately 160 °C is recommended in this case.
Decreasing the detector temperature is also recommended if not using the BID.
 If a polyimide capillary column is used for the outer covering, some types of polyimides can
cause noise or tailing if the detector temperature is higher than 300 °C, due to carbonization
of the polyimide on the surface of the column inserted in the detector.
In such cases, tailing can be removed by cutting the section inserted into the detector, but it
is recommended that the detector temperature be reduced.
It is not necessary to reduce the detector temperature below 300 °C when columns that
contain highly heat-resistant polyimids or SUS capillaries are used.

3.10 Lighting the Plasma

1. Select the detector.

Press the [DET] key to display the Detector settings screen.
If a different detector is displayed when multiple detectors are installed, press the toggle
key to switch the PF menu, and press [Next Det] to change the detector.

2. Check that the detector temperature is the same as the set value.
When lighting the BID, always check that the detector temperature is sufficiently high (over
150 °C).
If BID is lit when the detector temperature is below 150 °C, cyclical changes in the baseline,
reduced sensitivity or malfunction may occur.

! CAUTION
Do not light before the detector is at high temperature.
Doing so may result in cyclical changes in the baseline, reduced
sensitivity or malfunction.

3. Set the detector control to On.

If the detector control is [Off] in the top right area of the BID detector setting screen, use
the cursor keys (up/down) to move the position of the cursor to [Off], use the cursor keys
(left/right) to change the BID detector control to [On], and press the [Enter] key to confirm.

4. Press the [Det Gas] key in the PF menu, set the type of gas and flow rate, and turn the
detector gas control On.
Recommended detector gas flow settings are as follows.
Column Flow Detector Gas Flow (Recommended)
Less than 10 mL/min 50 mL/min
10 to 15 mL/min 70 mLmin
15 mL/min or greater 100 mL/min

5. Press [Return] in the PF menu to display the detector screen, and press [PlasmaON] in the
detector screen PF menu. The "Start lighting" message is displayed at the bottom left of
the screen, and the lighting operation starts.

3.10 Lighting the Plasma

6. When the lighting operation completes normally, the "Lighting on" message is displayed at
the bottom left of the screen, the BID icon lights in the MONIT screen, and the plasma item
in the DET screen changes to [On].

If lighting fails, the message "DET#1(-4) Plasma on failed" is displayed at the bottom left of the
screen, and the lighting operation ends. If the error message is displayed, see "6 Troubleshooting".
Press [Return] in the PD menu, and press the [PlasmaON] key in the detector screen PF menu.

7. If the BID is selected in a line and the BID detector control and detector gas control are on
when the gas chromatograph is started, the lighting operation starts automatically after the
detector reaches the set temperature.
This is unrelated to the automatic lighting setting in the gas chromatograph startup process.
Automatic lighting does not happen if the BID detector control and detector gas control are
changed to On after starting the system, even if the BID is set in a line.
Press [PlasmaON] in the PF menu on the BID screen.

3.12 Setting the Range/Attenuation

3.12 Setting the Range/Attenuation

1. For analog signal output

The analog signal output can be set to wide or linear when a data processor is connected
to the analog signal output. (The signal range and analog signal type are set from the
[DET] key screen.)
Set the analog signal type to [Wide] when a wide-range compatible data processor (C-R7A,
C-R7Aplus, C-R8A) is connected. Set the analog signal type to [Linear] for all other data
processors.
The detector signal attenuation does not need to be changed when [Wide] is set. However,
if the attenuation of the data processor cannot be adjusted (e.g.: when an error peak
occurs because the input signal is exceeded), the detector signal attenuation needs to be
changed in the detector setting screen.
-0 -4
The attenuation can be set in 5 levels from ×1(2 ) to ×2 .
When the index number increases by 1, the output signal is halved. Be sure to perform
wide range calibration before use (refer to "2.7 Connecting external device cables" in the
GC-2010 Plus instruction manual (CD-ROM version)).
The linear settings range can be set in 5 steps, from ×1(10 0) to ×10-4 .
The output signal is a maximum at range x1, and is output at 1/10 for 10-1, 1/100 for 10-2,
1/1000 for 10-3, and 1/10000 for 10-4.
Use the small range (x1, x10-1) for sensitive analysis, and use the larger ranges (x10-2,
x10-3, x10-4) for all other cases.

2. For digital output

When a digital connection compatible data processor (GCsolution, LabSolutions) is
connected digitally, the range (attenuation) settings are not required (because digital
output is always output as x1).

BID-2010 Plus Instruction Manual 21

3 Basic Operation

3.13 Checking the Baseline

1. Set the chromatomonitor screen full scale for the GCsolution or LabSolutions (digital
signal) to 6.4 x 104 μV, and check that the baseline stabilizes without scaling out and
becomes horizontal. Set the attenuation to 3 (23) for Chromatopak (analog signal).

Stabilized baseline

2. If the baseline does not stabilize as shown in the figure below or scales out, refer to
"6 Troubleshooting".

Noise Wandering

(Positive) drift Other

(Negative) drift

Various Baseline Abnormalities

 Zero Adjustment
Press the GC [MONIT] key, press [Zero Adj] in the PF menu or use the [Zero Adjustment] function in
GCsolution or LabSolutions to set the signal output to 0 μV.
If the Chromatopak display does not return to 0 μV even when zero adjustment is performed on the
GC side, perform additional zero adjustment on the Chromatopak side. For details, refer to "4.7 Zero
Adjustment".

The zero adjustment function on GCsolution and LabSolutions is the same function as the GC unit, but
the Chromatopak zero adjustment function does not adjust the detector output signal. Always perform
zero adjustment on the GC unit.

3.14 System Stopping

3.14 System Stopping

1. Press the [System] key while the system is running, and select [Stop GC] in the PF menu
of the displayed screen.
The system stop operation is executed according to the stop time and flow off time set
beforehand.

 Do not remove the power plug of the "PURE HE ASSY" attached to the rear of the GC-2010 Plus
from the power socket. Sweep gas is supplied at a rate of approximately 10 mL/min in the GC
stopped state in order to protect the PURE HE ASSY parts and keep the equipment stabilized.
 To stop the sweep gas supply, follow the instructions in "3.6 Setting the Flow Rate of Detector
Gases" to turn the sweep gas OFF after removing the PURE HE ASSY power plug and waiting for
at least an hour.

! CAUTION
When stopping the supply of sweep gas for any reason, always pull out
the "PURE HE ASSY" power plug on the back of the GC at least one hour
before stopping the gas supply.
If the power plug is removed and low purity gas enters the "PURE HE ASSY"
within one hour, the filter becomes saturated and requires replacement.
The "PURE HE ASSY" is a consumable item.

What is the [Stop Time]?

This is the time period to stop temperature control for each part after the [Stop GC] button is pressed
(or after operation of each program has been completed).
Control of the carrier gas and make up continues after the set stop time has elapsed if the flow off
time is set, even if the temperature control has stopped.

BID-2010 Plus Instruction Manual 23

3 Basic Operation

What is the [Flow Off Time]?

This is the time that carrier gas control is continued for after temperature control is stopped.
There is a danger of the column degrading if the carrier gas supply is stopped when the column
oven temperature is still high. Set the flow off time to provide sufficient time for the column
temperature to reduce after the temperature control is stopped.
The recommended value is at least 30 min for BID.

Initial Value (Factory setting)

The flow off time is set to [Cont] and the carrier gas and make up gas do not stop. After the
temperature of each of the parts has sufficiently dropped (recommended temp.: 50 °C), turn off the
power switch on the bottom right of the GC unit to turn off the system.

For details on stopping the GC, refer to the GC-2010 Plus instruction manual (CD-ROM version).
To restart the equipment, follow the procedures in "3.7 System Startup".

 It is possible to keep the inside of the cells and detector gas flow path clean by constantly
supplying sweep gas to detector cells even when the BID is unused (for example, if the system is
off or the gas chromatograph is not powered). A continuous sweep gas supply of around 5 to 10
mL/min is needed to reduce the restarting time.
 Around 5 to 10 mL/min of helium gas is consumed due to sweep gas flowing constantly even
when the system is off or the gas chromatograph is not powered, to protect the PURE HE ASSY,
keep the detector stabilized and reduce stabilization time when the detector is started.
Make sure to close the gas tap if you do not use the BID for a long time and want to turn off the
sweep gas supply. Follow the steps and cautions in "3.6.2 Sweep Gas" when stopping the sweep
gas.

! CAUTION
When stopping the supply of sweep gas for any reason, always pull out the
"PURE HE ASSY" power plug on the back of the GC at least one hour before
stopping the gas supply.
If the power plug is removed and low purity gas enters the "PURE HE ASSY"
within one hour, the filter becomes saturated and requires replacement.
The "PURE HE ASSY" is a consumable item.

BID-2010 Plus Instruction Manual 25

4 Key Operation

4.1.2 List of Settings

 Detector Control On/Off
Settings: On/Off; default setting: On
Select "On" to enable detection control.
Temperature control and gas control are enabled and a signal is output from detectors that are
selected in a line and have detector control enabled. The detector temperature and gas of all
selected detectors, including those for which detector control is disabled, are controlled and
increased to the set value.
Signal output is stopped if detector control is disabled during use and resumed if it is enabled again.

 Set the detector temperature to 150 °C or higher when using. Using at a temperature lower than
150 °C can cause the baseline to become unstable.
 Using at a detector temperature higher than 320 °C for extended periods of time can shorten the
life of the detector.
A temperature that is between 150 °C and 300 °C and does not exceed the maximum usable
temperature of the column is recommended. Setting a high detector temperature when analyzing
oxidized gases containing a large amount of oxygen can also shorten the life of the detector. A
detector temperature of approximately 160 °C is recommended in this case.
Decreasing the detector temperature is also recommended if not using the BID.
 If a polyimide capillary column is used for the outer covering, some types of polyimides can cause
tailing if the detector temperature is higher than 300 °C, due to carbonization of the polyimide on
the column surface inserted in the detector. Cutting the section inserted in the detector can stop
this tailing, but lowering the detector temperature is recommended. The temperature does not
need to be set below 300 °C if using a highly heat resistant polyimide column or SUS capillary.

 Temp (°C)
Setting range: 0.0 to 350.0 °C; default setting: 25.0 °C
Set the detector temperature. Usually set the temperature slightly (final temperature + around 20 °C)
higher than the column oven temperature (final temperature of progressive temperature increase) to
prevent substances with a high boiling point from sticking to the inside of the detector.
See "16.6.4 Setting the maximum temperature limits" under "16.6 GC Configuration" in the GC-2010
Plus Instruction Manual (CD-ROM Version) for information on setting the maximum temperature.

4 Key Operation

4.2.3 Checking Line Configuration (Detector Settings)

Press the [SET] key to display the SET key screen.
Press [LineConfg] in the PF menu to display the Line Configuration screen.

Check that the BID is set in the appropriate line in the Detector field.

line, using the left and right cursor keys to select a line number and pressing the [ENTER] key.

See "8. Setting the Analytical Parameters and File Management" in the GC-2010 Plus Instruction Manual
(CD-ROM Version)
for more details.

When using BID, set BID only in its analysis line.

Putting the BID in the same analysis line as other detectors causes values such as retention time and
area value to be displayed incorrectly. This is because, unlike other detectors, pressure is applied inside
the BID, meaning that values such as flow and split ratio are calculated by a different method from other
detectors. This also means that advanced flow technologies such as backflushing, detector splitting,
detector switching and MDGC-2010 are not supported.

4 Key Operation

4.3.1 Setting the Detector Gas

1. Press the [DET] key to display the Detector settings screen.

2. Press [Det Gas] in the PF menu to display the detector gas settings screen.

3. Set the detector gas flow between 20 and 100 mL/min (around 5 to 30 kPa).
Recommended detector gas flow settings are as follows.
Column Flow Detector Gas Flow (Recommended)
Less than 10 mL/min 50 mL/min
10 to 15 mL/min 70 mL/min
15 mL/min or greater 100 mL/min

Gas flow can be set between 0 and 100 mL/min.

However, the plasma becomes unstable if the gas flow is less than 20 mL/min, causing lighting
to be suspended and a message saying "DCG flow rate is not enough" to be displayed.
Using a flow higher than that recommended decreases sensitivity.
Using a flow lower than that recommended increases sensitivity but causes the following
phenomena:
 Dynamic range wanders and detection on the high-density side becomes difficult, causing
poor peak shapes.
 Solvents or substances with a high boiling point leave residue or stick to the inside of the
detector, causing operational instability such as baseline wandering and decreased
sensitivity.

4.4 Detector On/Off

 It is possible to keep the inside of the cells and detector gas flow path clean by constantly
supplying sweep gas to detector cells even when the BID is unused (for example, if the system is
off or the gas chromatograph is not powered). A continuous sweep gas supply of around 5 to 10
mL/min is needed to reduce the restarting time.
 Around 5 to 10 mL/min of helium gas is consumed due to sweep gas flowing constantly even when
the system is off or the gas chromatograph is not powered, to protect the PURE HE ASSY, keep
the detector stabilized and reduce stabilization time when the detector is started.
Make sure to close the gas tap if you do not use the BID for a long time and want to turn off the
sweep gas supply. Follow the steps and cautions in "3.6.2 Sweep Gas" when stopping the sweep
gas.

4.4 Detector On/Off

If BID control is [Off], use the cursor keys (up/down) to move to the [Off] position at the top right of
the screen, use the cursor keys (left/right) to change the BID detector control to [On] and press the
[ENTER] key.

4.7 Zero Adjustment

 Key Operation 1: Automatic Zero Adjustment

Press [Zero Adj] in the PF Menu. The signal output becomes 0 μV and the baseline automatically
moves to the zero point.
When using the chromatopack, the baseline may not be displayed in the full scale range on the
chromatopack depending on the detection range or the attenuation of the chromatopack. Adjust the
zero point using the zero adjustment function of the chromatopack in this case.
See "4.7 Zero Adjustment" for details.

While zero adjustment in GCsolution and LabSolutions is the same function as with the gas
chromatograph, performing zero adjustment on the chromatopack does not adjust the output signal of the
detector.
Make sure to perform zero adjustment on the gas chromatograph itself.

adjustments, the valve inside the APC may be malfunctioning.
Turn the system power OFF, and contact your Shimadzu representative.
(1) Refer to "3.6 Setting the Flow Rate of Detector Gases" to turn the sweep gas flow rate OFF,
and check that the flow rate monitor value is 0 mL/min.
(2) If the flow rate monitor value is not 0 mL/min, perform APC calibration. For details on how to
perform APC calibration, refer to "3.6 AFC and APC Offset Calibration" in the GC-2010 Plus
Instruction Manual (CD-ROM Version).
(3) Adjust the sweep gas flow rate to approximately 5 to 10 mL/min. (Refer to "3.6.2 Sweep
Gas")

Check that a stable supply of gas is flowing at the required pressure.
If there are no problems with the gas supply, the sweep gas may be flowing at a greater rate than
the set rate. Check that the sweep gas flow rate is approximately 5 to 10 mL/min. If there are no
problems with the sweep gas flow rate, there may be a problem with the APC control system.
