1. Referring to Fig. 5-4.7, determine the range of
values of theta for which force P = 200 lb will move to
the 300 block.

Ans: 17.9◦ < θ < 59.3◦

2. Find the least of value of P that will just start the system
of blocks shown in Fig.5-4.13 moving to the right. The coefficient
of friction under each block is 0.30.

Ans: P = 247 lb : a = 16.7◦

3. A homogenous block of weight W rest upon the incline
shown in Fig. P. 5-14.14. If the coefficient of friction is 0.30,
determine the greatest height h at which a force P parallel to the
incline may be applied so that the block will slide up the incline
without tipping over.

Ans: h = 5.72 in
4. Block A in Fig. P-5-.17 weighs 120 lb, block B weighs 200
lb, and the cord is parallel to the incline. If the coefficient of friction
for all surfaces in contact is 0.25, determine the angle θ of the incline
for which motion of B impends.
5. A plank, 12 ft long and of negligible weight, is
supported and carries the horizontal and vertical loads
shown in Fig. P-5-5.13. The coefficient of friction is 0.30.
If T = 300 lb, determine the value of P to start motion
downward.

Ans: P = 990 lb
6. A homogenous cylinder 3 ft in diameter and weighing
400 lb is resting on two rough inclined surfaces as shown in Fig.
P-5-5.14. If the angle of friction is 15◦, find the couple C applied
to the cylinder that will start it rotating clockwise.

Ans: C = 251 ft-lb

7. Determine the force P required to start the wedge show
in Fig. P-5-5.24. The angle of friction for all surfaces in contact
is 15◦

Ans: P = 944 lb
