Assignment 2 S2024

The document contains 9 questions about electric machines and dc motors. Question 1 asks about autotransformers and instrument transformers. Question 2 asks about commutation and losses in dc machines. The remaining questions ask about torque, speed, current, counter EMF and efficiency calculations for separately excited dc motors and generators under various loading conditions.

ELECTRIC MACHIINE ELE271

Assignment No. 2
Question Number 1

A. Describe the Autotransformer, use drawing to illustrate your answer. Explain the main
advantages and disadvantages of using autotransformer.
B. List the two Types of Instrument transformers. Explain the use of instrument
transformers

Question Number 2

A. Define commutation? Demonstrate how can a commutator convert ac voltages on

a machine's armature to dc voltages at its terminals.
B. Name the types of losses that are present in a dc machine.

Question Number 3
A. A 25 Hp separately excited motor is operating at a speed of 250 rpm. It is supplied from
a 120 V supply and draws 5.6 A. The total armature circuit resistance is .473 ohms. Find
the torque constant for the machine.
Question Number 4

Consider a separately excited dc motor. Describe the speed variation of the motor operating
unloaded under the following conditions:

A. The armature terminal voltage is varied while the field current is held constant.
B. The field current is varied while the armature terminal voltage is held constant.
C. The field winding is connected in shunt directly to the armature terminals and the
armature terminal voltage is then varied
Question Number 5
• A separately excited dc motor is rated at 200 HP, 600 V at 1200 rpm. The total armature
resistance is 0.24 ohms. When the motor is delivering 75 HP at 1200 rpm its efficiency
is 88%. At the 80 HP
find:
A. The motor armature current
B. counter emf (Ea)
C. torque at the shaft
D. an estimate of the mechanical losses
Question Number 6

The A 220-V shunt motor draws 30 A at 1800 rpm. The armature-circuit resistance is
0.2Ω, and the field-winding resistance is 440 Ω. The rotational loss is 180 W. Determine
(a) the back emf, (b) the driving torque, (c) the shaft torque, and (d) the efficiency of the
motor.

Question Number 7

A 230 V, 1800 rpm, long shunt, cumulative compound motor has a shunt field resistance of
460 Ω, series field resistance of 0.2 Ω and armature circuit resistance of 1.3 Ω. The full-
load line current is 10.5 A. The rotational loss is 5% of the power developed. Determine
the efficiency (in percentage) of the motor at full load

Question Number 8

A dc shunt motor operating unloaded at an armature terminal voltage of 125 V is observed

to be operating at a speed of 1420r/min. When the motor is operated unloaded at the same
armature terminal voltage but with an additional resistance of 8Ω in series with the shunt
field, the motor speed is observed to be 1560r/min.

A. Calculate the resistance of the shunt field.

B. Calculate the motor speed which will result if the series resistance is increased from
8Ω to 20Ω.
C. With the field resistance at its original value, calculate the motor speed if it is
operated unloaded at a terminal voltage of 90" " V.
Question Number 9

A 100-kW,250-V,400-A, long-shunt compound generator has an armature resistance

(including brushes) of 0.025Ω, a series-field resistance of 0.005Ω, and the corresponding
generated voltage is 𝐸𝐸a0 = 274 𝑉𝑉 . There are 1000 shunt-field turns per pole and three series-
field turns per pole. The series field is connected in such a fashion that positive armature
current produces direct-axis mmf which adds to that of the shunt field (i.e. Is = Ia ).

• Compute the terminal voltage at rated terminal current when the shunt-field current is 4.7A
and the speed is 1150r/min. Neglect the effects of armature reaction.
