HISTORY, FACILITIES, EQUIPMENTS

 WILLIAM G. MORGAN- invented the game volleyball


 FEBRUARY 9, 1895- date when volleyball was invented
 MINTONETTE- was the original name of volleyball
 60 X 30 FT OR 18M X 9M- court dimension
 5cm WIDE- size of all court lines
 ANTENNA/ANTENNAE- two vertical rods are usually red and white in color and are
mounted on the ends of the net, above the sidelines and not in-play.
 SERVICE LINE- area from which the server may serve the volleyball
 CENETER LINE- is marked at the center of the court
 BOUNDARY LINES- two sidelines and two end lines mark the playing court
 NET POSTS- is positioned 36 feet apart and 3 feet further out from the sidelines
 2.43m – height of men’s net
 2.23m- height of women’s net

SKILLS
 SERVING- the first contact that starts every rally
 RECEIVING- also called as passing the ball
 SETTING- is the second step of passing and it can be done to either dump the ball over
into an undefended spot or position the ball that allows the hitter to spike it over
 SPIKING- act of scoring a point by slamming the ball over the net
 BLOCKING- is an attempt to halt an opponent's attack by jumping with the hands
overhead to create a barrier at the net
 DIGGING- prevent the ball from hitting the floor after being spiked by the opposing team
 ROOF- is when a player jumps above the net to block and blocks the ball straight down
 STUFF BLOCK- occurs when the team that served the ball fails to win a point on the play,
resulting in a loss of serve to the opponent
 SIX PACK- occurs when a defensive player gets hit in the head or face by a spiked ball.
Also called a facial
 PANCAKE- is done by taking a hand and putting on the ground so the ball lands on top of
it
 FRONT ROW- players on zones II, III and IV
 SUBSTITUTION ZONE- This zone is limited by the extension of both attack lines up to the
scorer’s table
