1. INTRODUCTION
On-board diagnostics (OBD) is a term referring to a vehicle's self-
diagnostic and reporting capability. In the United States, this self
diagnostic is a requirement to comply with Federal Emissions
standards to detect failures that may increase the vehicle
tailpipe emissions to more than 150% of the standard to which it was
originally certified.
A primary benefit of this is that OBD systems give the vehicle owner
or repair technician access to the status of the various vehicle sub-
systems. The amount of diagnostic information available via OBD has
varied widely since its introduction in the early 1980s versions of on-
board vehicle computers. Early versions of OBD would simply
illuminate a malfunction indicator light (MIL) or "idiot light" if a
problem was detected, but would not provide any information as to
the nature of the problem. Modern OBD implementations use a
standardized digital communications port to provide real-time
data in addition to a standardized series of diagnostic trouble codes, or
DTC, which allow a person to rapidly identify and remedy
malfunctions within the vehicle.

3. CONSTRUCTION

The construction of an OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) measurement

system involves various components andsteps to monitor and analyze
a vehicle's performance and emissions. Here's an overview of the
construction process for such a system.

1. OBD Port Access

Locate the OBD port in the vehicle. It's typically located under the
dashboard, near the steering column.
Ensure a secure and reliable connection to the OBD port for data
retrieval. This may involve creating a custom connector or using off-
the-shelf OBD diagnostictools.

6
2. Data Acquisition Hardware
Choose appropriate data acquisition hardware. This canbe a
microcontroller, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or dedicated OBD-II
interface module.
Ensure compatibility with the OBD-II protocol (e.g.,ISO 15765-4
CAN bus for OBD-II.
3. Sensors
Depending on the specific measurements you want to capture,
connect relevant sensors to the data acquisitionhardware. Common
sensors may include:
Engine RPM sensor Vehicle
speed sensor
Oxygen sensor (for emissions data)Throttle
position sensor
Coolant temperature sensorMass
airflow sensor, etc.
4. Data Retrieval and Processing
Implement software or code on the data acquisition hardware to
retrieve OBD data through the OBD-II port. This involves sending
diagnostic requests (e.g.,PID requests) and receiving responses
from the vehicle's Engine Control Module (ECM).

5. Data Analysis and Storage

Develop software algorithms to interpret and analyzethe data
obtained from the vehicle.
Store the data in a structured format (e.g., database) forfuture
reference and analysis.

7
4. WORKING
The working of an OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) measurement
system involves the collection and analysis of data from a vehicle's
onboard computer system to monitor its performance, diagnose
issues, andensure emissions compliance. Here's a simplified
overview of how OBD measurement works.

Data Retrieval
The OBD measurement system connects to the vehicle'sOBD-II port,
typically located under the dashboard nearthe steering column.
It establishes communication with the vehicle's EngineControl
Module (ECM) using standardized OBD-II protocols (e.g., ISO
15765-4 CAN bus).
The system sends requests to the ECM for specific dataparameters,
such as engine speed, vehicle speed, coolant temperature, oxygen
sensor readings, and more.

Data Acquisition
The ECM responds to these requests by providing datain real-time.
This data can include sensor readings, diagnostic trouble codes
(DTCs), and emission-relatedinformation

Data Analysis
The OBD measurement system's software processes andinterprets the data
received from the vehicle.
It may calculate various parameters like fuel efficiency, emissions
levels, and engine performance based on the raw data.

8
Diagnostics
The system checks for the presence of DTCs. These are codes
generated by the vehicle's ECM when it detects a malfunction or
issue.
It interprets these DTCs to identify specific problems inthe vehicle's
systems, such as engine misfires, sensor failures, or emission-related
issues.

Reporting and Display

The measurement system can display real-time data anddiagnostic
information on a user interface, which could be a dashboard display, a
computer screen, or a smartphone app.
It may provide visual alerts or notifications to the user ifany issues are
detected, along with descriptions of the problems.
Data Storage
The system may log the collected data, including sensorreadings and DTCs,
for future reference and analysis.
This stored data can be valuable for ongoing vehiclemaintenance and
troubleshooting.

9
Maintenance and Compliance
If maintenance is required, the system can guidetechnicians
or vehicle owners in diagnosing andaddressing issues.
In the case of emissions testing or compliance checks, the system can
help ensure that the vehicle meets regulatory standards.

10
5. TYPES OF OBD MEASUREMENT
1. Power train codes (P code)
2. Body codes (B code)
3. Chassis codes (C code)
4. Network communication codes (U code)

6.1 ADVANTAGES

1. Early Issue Detection

2. Improved Maintenance
3. Emissions Monitoring

6.2 DISADVANTAGES
1. Complexity for Technician
2. False alarms
3. Dependency on technology

6.3 APPLICATION

1. Vehicle Diagnostics and Maintenance

2. Emissions Testing and Compliance
3. Fuel Efficiency Optimization

11
7.CONCLUSION

In conclusion, On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) measurement systems

are invaluable tools in the automotive industry and beyond. These
systems have transformed vehicle maintenance, diagnostics,
emissions control, and data-driven decision-making. Here are the key
points to summarize the importance ofOBD measurement
