Common Factor/Multiples/Roundoff – Worksheet 1

Factors are the number you multiply together to get another

numbers:

2 x 3 =6
Factor Factor

A number can have many factors:

Factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12

2 x 6 = 12
4 x 3 = 12
1 x 12 = 12

NOTES:
Common Factor/Multiples/Roundoff – Worksheet 1

When you find the factors of two or more numbers, and then
some factors are the same (“common”), then they are the
“common factors

Example: 12 and 30

Factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12

Factors of 30 are 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15 and 30

Common factors : 1, 2, 3 and 6

Another example with three numbers:

Find the common factors of 15, 30 and 105

Factors of 15 are 1, 3, 5 and 15

Factors of 30 are 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15 and 30

Factors of 105 are 1, 3, 5, 7, 15, 21, 35 and 105

The factors that are common to all three numbers are

1 ,3, 5 and 15

Therefore, the common factors of 15, 30 and 105 are 1, 3, 5 and

Common Factor/Multiples/Roundoff – Worksheet 1

Multiples of 2
RULE: The multiples are all even.

Eg. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14

Multiples of 3
RULE: The sum of the digits in each number is divisible (a
multiple) by 3.

Eg. 39 :
12 is divisible by 3. Thus,
3 + 9 = 12 39 is divisible by 3

Multiples of 4
RULE: The last two digits of the number must also be a multiple
of 4. The numbers are always even but not all even numbers
are a multiple of 4.

Eg. 148 :

48 48 is divisible by 4. Thus,
148 is divisible by 4

Multiples of 5
RULE: The numbers must end in 0 or 5.

Eg. 10, 15, 20, 25, 40, 125, 1320

Common Factor/Multiples/Roundoff – Worksheet 1

Multiples of 6
RULE: The numbers are even (divisible by 2) and divisible by 3.

Eg. 126 :
9 is divisible by 3 and 126 is
1+2+6 = 9 even number. Thus, 126 is
divisible by 6

Multiples of 7
RULE: There is NO rule for multiples of 7.

Multiples of 8
RULE: The numbers are always even. The last three digits of a
number are a multiple of 8 then the number is divisible by 8

Eg. 488, 1640, 1896,

Multiples of 9
RULE: The digits in these numbers have a sum that is 9 or a
multiple of 9.

Eg. 828 :
18 is divisible by 9. Thus, 828
8+2+8 =18 is divisible by 9

Multiples of 10
RULE: The numbers must end in 0.

Eg. 10, 80, 120, 220, 140, 1500, 1050

Common Factor/Multiples/Roundoff – Worksheet 1

Multiples that are common to two or more

numbers are said to be common multiples.

Example:

Multiples of 2 are 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, …

Multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, …

So, common multiples of 2 and 3 are 6, 12, 18, …

Example:

Find the common multiples of 4 and 6.

Solution:
Multiples of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, …

Multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, …

So, the common multiples of 4 and 6 are 12, 24,

36, …
