CNC 2

The document discusses the history and development of technology, specifically defining numerically controlled machine tools and computer numerical control. Numerically controlled machine tools use electronic systems to control machine movements and functions through numerical instructions. Computer numerical control further developed this by incorporating a computer into the control loop to store programs and handle machine control logic.

Definition
Numerically Controlled Machine Tools
Numerically controlled (NC) is the term to describe the
control of machine movements and various other
functions by instructions expressed as a series of
numbers, letters or symbols and initiated in an
electronic-controlled system.

Computer numerical control

Computerized numerical control (CNC) is the term used
when the control system includes a computer in the loop
(1970s)

Definition (cont’d)
 Conventionally, an operator decides and
adjusts various machines parameters like
feed, depth of cut etc. depending on type
of job, and controls the slide movements
by hand. In a CNC Machine functions and
slide movements are controlled by motors
using computer programs.

Definition (cont’d)
 In CNC (Computer Numerical Control), the
instructions are stored as a program in a
micro-computer attached to the machine.
The computer will also handle much of the
control logic of the machine, making it
more adaptable than earlier hard-wired
controllers.
