GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Call to Worship
One: Happy are those who take delight in the law of the Lord.
All: They are like trees planted by streams of water. In all that they do they prosper.
One: For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous.
All: May God number us with the righteous as we worship the Lord.
One: Let us worship God!

*Hymn
We Are Standing on Holy Ground
We are standing on holy ground,
and I know that there are angels all around;
let us praise Jesus now;
we are standing in his presence on holy ground. x2

Litany of Affirmation
One: The testimony of God is greater than human testimony. God’s testimony has borne
witness to Jesus, the Christ.
All: Whoever receives the Word of God has life.
One: Whoever believes in the One whom God sent has God’s testimony.
All: Whoever receives the Word of God has life.
One: The testimony is this: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in Jesus Christ, God’s
Anointed One.
2
All: Whoever receives the Word of God has life.
One: I proclaim this to you who confess the name of Jesus Christ, that you may know that
you have eternal life.
All: Whoever receives the Word of God has life.

Prayer of Confession
One: Lord of patience and persistence, we live in a broken and shattered world. All around
us we see great evidence of hatred and alienation. We cannot help but observe the
alienation of your people from each other. We create devices to separate rather than
unite; to divide rather than come together in hope. Forgive us for our sins. These sins
cause such division and hurt. Remind us today that the disciples, too, lived in a fearful
world and that one day you came to them, as they sat huddled in fear, and you
empowered them. You gave them hearts of courage and faith. Please bring to us the
same hearts that we may serve you well, bringing peace and hope to our world.
All: In the name of Christ, we offer this prayer. AMEN.

PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Epistles
Acts 2:1-21
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly
from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house
where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue
rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in
other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5 Now there were devout Jews from every
nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was
bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed
and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it
that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and
3
residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and
Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both
Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking
about God’s deeds of power.” 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another,
“What does this mean?” 13 But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” 14
But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and
all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these
are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16 No, this is what
was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will
pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your
young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18 Even upon my slaves,
both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19 And
I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and
smoky mist. 20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming
of the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
shall be saved.’

Seek Ye First
Seek ye first the kingdom of God
and His righteousness,
and all these things shall be added unto you.
Allelu, alleluia!
Ask, and it shall be given unto you;
seek and you shall find;
knock, and the door shall be opened unto you.
Allelu, alleluia!
You shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word
that proceeds from the mouth of God.
Allelu, alleluia!

Reading from the Gospel
Acts 19:1-7
While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus,
where he found some disciples. 2 He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you
became believers?” They replied, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3
Then he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They answered, “Into John’s baptism.” 4
Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the
one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon
them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied— 7 altogether there were about twelve of
them.

“The Birthday of the Church”

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

*Affirmation of Faith Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that
is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, eternally begotten of the
Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our
salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin
Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he
suffered death and was buried. On the Third day he rose again in accordance with the
Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He
will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no
end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the
Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who
has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection
of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
