A2 1

This document provides examples of probability distribution problems to solve including Poisson, normal, exponential, and uniform distributions. Examples involve estimating probabilities of events, determining percentage of values within intervals, and plotting distributions.

Probability distributions laboratory

Instructions: Solve each one of the following problems, showing the complete
procedure using the appropriate probability distribution.

1. A call-center receives phone calls following a Poisson distribution with λ = 3

per minute. estimate the probabilities that in a minute:

a) No phone calls are received

b) Fewer than three calls are received.

2. In a manufacturing process of a special article the proportion of damaged items

is 0.01. In order to analyse this process, a random sample of n = 100 is selected
from the manufacturing line. Estimate the probability of finding no more than one
damaged article in this sample.

3. The average weight of a sack of seeds is 105g with a standard deviation of

2.5g and follows a normal distribution.

a) Estimate the probability that a sack weights less than 100g

b) Estimate the probability that a sack weights more than 101g but less than
108g.

c) What is the weight of 40% of sacks?

4. During the manufacturing process of a certain piece of equipment, the size if

this piece follows a normal distribution with mean of 50cm and standard deviation
of 5cm.

a) Plot this distribution using information regarding mean and standard devia-
tion. Also, show the breaks for 68-95-99 rule.

b) In what interval would you expect to find 99.7% of central values?

c) What percentage of values is above 50cm?

d) What percentage of pieces is below 45cm?

1
e) What percentage of pieces is between 40cm and 65cm?

5. A machine fills bags of coffee resulting in bags with a weight that follows a
normal distribution with µ = 510g and σ = 20g. Each bags is stamped with the
legend Net weight:500g.

a) What percentage of all bags has a weight below the stated Net weight?

b) What percentage of all bags has a weight above 550g?

6. If we analyse the time a worker’s union spends on strike we realise it follows an

exponential distribution with mean of 10 days.

a) Estimate the probability that a strike lasts less than one day.

b) Estimate the probability that a strike lasts less than six days.

c) Estimate the probability than a strike has a duration between six and seven
days.

7. A random variable X has the following probability distribution:

(
0.5 3 ≤ x ≤ 5
f (x) =
0 otherwise

a) Make a plot for this distribution

b) Distributions like this are called uniform distributions and it is relatively

easy working with them. All probabilities are usually found as areas for
rectangles. In this example, we can make a = 3, b = 5. Then, estimate
P (X ≤ 4.5|a = 3, b = 5)

c) Estimate P (X ≤ 4.3|a = 3, b = 5)

d) Estimate P (0.25 ≤ X ≤ 0.75|a = 3, b = 5)

e) Estimate P (X > 3.4|a = 0, b = 10)

f) Estimate P (X < 0|a = −1, b = 4)

8. The expected duration for en electronic component follows and exponential
distribution with mean of 120 hours. Detemine:

a) The plot for this distribution

b) The probability that a component will fail within the first 100 hours of use

c) The probability that a component will last more than 150 hours.
