Components of A Computer

System
Background Information

All computers need two types of
components to do anything useful;
hardware and software.
Hardware

Hardware is physical components which
we can touch. These include things such
as the Motherboard, Processor, RAM and
Hard Drive.
Software

Software gives the hardware instructions.
Groups of these instructions are known as
programs.
Types of Hardware

Hardware can be split up into two groups;
the computer itself and peripherals

Peripherals are hardware outside of the
computer.
Peripherals

Peripherals can be split up into groups; Input, Output and Storage
devices.

Input devices tell the computer what to do, such as a computer
mouse or keyboard.

Output devices are used so the computer can return information to
us, such as a monitor.

Storage devices are the computers permanent memory. Once the
computer has been turned off, the information has not been deleted
and can be used at another date.
Types of Software

Software comes in two main groups; Application software and
System Software.

System Software is also called the operating system. This allows the
hardware to work.

Applications software run on top of the system software and allow the
computer to do something useful.
