Assignment 1

Q1. A gas has a pressure of 136kN/m2 and a volume of 0.114m3. Determine:

(i) The new volume of the gas if it is compressed to 700kN/m2 according to the law
PV1.4=C
(ii) The work done by the gas
(iii) Comment on the result

Q2. A gas is compressed hyperbolically from a pressure and volume of 102kN/m2 and 0.053m3
respectively to a volume of 0.009m3. Determine:

(i) The final pressure of the gas

(ii) The work done
(iii) Comment on the result

Q3. A petrol engine uses 18.2kg of petrol per hour. If the petrol has a calorific value of 43MJ/kg
and the thermal efficiency of the engine is 22%, determine the power output of the engine and
the energy rejected per min.

Q4. Air having a pressure, temperature and mass of 340kN/m2, 36oC, and 0.25kg receives heat
energy at constant volume until its pressure becomes 700kN/m2. It then receives heat energy at
constant pressure until its volume becomes 0.2298m3. Determine the change in entropy for each
process.

Q5. Heating-oil can be replaced by a coal-oil mixture (COM) that acts as a fuel for certain
applications. Mixing is required before use in order to prevent settling of the coal particles. An
open tank contains 5000kg of COM at 22oC. The COM is stirred for 40 minutes by a 20kW
paddle mixer. During this operation, the temperature of the mixture rises to 27.6oC. Assuming
that the specific heat of the COM is constant at cp = 1.4kJ/kgK, determine:

(i) The heat transfer between the COM and the surroundings.
(ii) What the temperature rise of the COM would be if the tank were perfectly insulated.

Q6. A heat engine operates between two reservoirs, one at 400oC and the other at 50oC. The
engine produces 7.5kW of power and rejects heat into the cold reservoir at a rate of 9.0kW.
Determine:

(i) The efficiency of the heat engine.

(ii) Whether the heat engine is reversible.
