(i) Estimate (ii)Estimator (iii) Point Estimation (iv)Interval Estimation .
2. Assume that σ=20.0 how large a random sample be taken to assert with probability 0.95 that the sample
mean will not differ from the true mean by more than 3.0 points ?.
3. Discuss the working rule for Testing of hypothesis?
4. Define Type-I and Type-II Error , and Critical region ?
5. A) An oceanographer wants to check whether the depth of the ocean in a certain region is 57.4
fathom, as had previously been recorded . what can he conclude at the 0.05 level of significance , if
reading taken at 40 random locations in the given region yielded a mean of 59.1 fathoms with a
standard deviation of 5.2 fathoms .
B) what is the maximum error one can expect to make with probability 0.90 when using the mean
of a random sample of size n=64 to estimate the mean of population with σ 2=2.56 .
LongAnswer Questions:
6 In a study of an automobile insurance a random sample of 80 body repair costs had a mean of
Rs.472.36 and the S.D of Rs.62.35. if ẍ is used as a point estimate to the true average repair cost,
with what confidence we can assert that the maximum error doesn’t exceed Rs.10.
7 The mean of random sample is an unbiased estimate of the mean of the population 3 , 6 , 9, 15,27.
(i) List of all possible samples of size 3 that can be taken without replacement from the finite
population.
(ii) Calculate the mean of each of the samples listed in (a) and assigning each sample a
probability of 1/10.verify that the mean of these ẍ is equal to 12.which is equal to the mean
of the population ϴ . I e prove that ẍ is an unbiased estimate of ϴ
8 I) In a random sample of 60 workers , the average time taken by them to get to work is 33.8 minutes
with a standard deviation of 6.1 minutes. Can we reject the null hypothesis µ=32.6 minutes in
favour of alternative null hypothesis µ>32.6 at α=0.025 level of significance.
ii) A sample of 400 items is taken from a population whose standard deviation is 10. The mean of
the sample is 40. Test whether the sample has come from a population with mean 38. Also calculate
95% confidence interval for the population.
9 I) A company claims that its bulbs are superior to those of its main competitor. If a study showed
that a sample of 40 of its bulbs have a mean life time of 647 hrsof continuous use with a S.D if 27
hrs. while a sample of bulbs made by its main competitor had a mean life time of 638 hrs of
continuous use with a S.D of 31 hrs. test the significance between the difference of two means at
5% level.
ii) In a survey of buying habits,400 women shoppers are chosen at random in super market A
located in a certain section of the city. Their average weekly food expenditure is Rs 250 with a S.D
of Rs 40.For 400 women shoppers chosen at random in super market B in another section of the
city , the average weekly food expenditure is Rs 220 with a S.D of Rs 55. Test at 1% level of
significance whether the average weekly food expenditure of the two populations of shoppers are
equal.
10 i) A manufacture claims that at least 98% of the steel pipes which he supplied to a factory
confirmed to specifications. An examination of a sample of 500 pieces of pipes revealed that 30
were defective. Test his claim at a significance level of 0.05.
ii) In a sample of 1000 people in Karnataka 540 are rice eaters and the rest are wheat eaters. Can we
assume that both rice and wheat are equally popular in this state at 1% level of significance.
11 i) A manufacturer of electronic equipment subject’s samples of two completing brands of
transistors to an accelerated performance test. If 45 of 180 transistors of the first kind and 34 of 120
transistors of the second kind fail the test, what can he conclude at the level of significance α=0.05
about the difference between the corresponding sample proportions.
ii) In two large populations, there are 30% and 25% respectively of fair-hairedpeople. Is this
difference likely to be hidden in samples of 1200 and 900 respectively from the two populations.
12 i) A sample of 26 bulbs gives a mean life of 990 hours with a S.D of 20 hours. The manufacturer
claims that the mean life of bulbs is 1000 hours. Is the sample not up to the standard.
ii) A random sample of 10 boys had the following I. Q’s:70,120,110,101,88,83,95,98,107 and 100.
a) DO these data support the assumption of a population mean I.Q of 100?
b) Find a reasonable range in which most of the mean I.Q values of samples of 10 boys lie.
13 A group of 5 patients treated with medicine A weight 42,39,48,60 and 41 kgs. Second group of 7
patients from the same hospital treated with medicine B weight 38,42,56,64,68,69, and 62 kgs. Do
you agree with the claim that medicine B increases the weight significantly.
14 Two random sample reveal the following results:
Sample Size Sample mean Sum of square of
Deviations from the
mean
1 10 15 90
2 12 14 108
Test whether the samples came from the same normal population.
15 Time taken by the workers in performing a job by method I and method II is given below
Method I 20 16 26 27 23 22 -
Method II 27 33 42 35 32 34 38

are drawn do not differ significantly.
