What is a CAP? Automatic Casing Annulus
A Casing Annulus Packer (CAP) is an inflatable Packer Operation Sequence
packer installed on the outside diameter of a pup joint of
casing or casing mandrel. The CAP includes an inflation
control valve mechanism to inflate the element and
create a seal between the casing mandrel and open hole
or previously set casing string.

Why run a CAP?

The Casing Annulus Packer (CAP) is superior for a
wide variety of applications where a seal is required
between casing and open hole (or previous casing string).
CAPs can inflate to greater than 2.5 times their run in
diameters. Casing can be reciprocated with CAPs in
the string. The greatest advantage is CAPs enhance
customer flexibility in planning a completion. A CAP
can be inflated by straddling the inflation port with a
variety of packer setting tools or by simply applying
pressure to the entire casing string as shown.

COMMON CAP APPLICATIONS

• For multiple stage cementing in vertical wells a
CAP is placed below the stage tool to support the
cement column while it cures.

• To prevent annular gas migration a CAP above

the gas source stops the migration and ensures the
integrity of the cement job.

• To separate horizontal wells into segments,

slotted liner, screens and blank casing are selectively
placed between CAPs. TAM XTRACAPs are specially
designed for zone isolations below the build section.

General Running Procedure

CAPs make up into the casing string using the
same tongs and make up torque as the rest of the string.
The casing tally and log correlation determine the
correct location of the CAP or CAPs in the string.
Open hole caliper logs also aid in proper location of the
CAP with respect to hole conditions.
TAM valve subs can be located on either end of the
inflation element to run in the up or down position.
CAPs inflate by pressuring the casing ID to shear the
Opening Valve shear pin. Inflation fluid expands the
packer element until sufficient inflation pressure closes
the Delta P valve. Removing pressure from the casing
ID activates the Safe Lok™ feature, permanently locking
the Opening Valve in the closed position.

hole conditions and recommend the proper Opening and

Run-In Position
This unique system consists of an
Opening Valve (Normally Closed) and a
Delta P Valve (Normally Open) as shown in
the Run In position drawing. An optional
break off rod extends into the casing ID to
reduce premature plugging of the inlet
ports. A check valve may be located down
stream of the Delta P valve.

Inflating Position
As shown in the Inflating position
drawing, sufficient pressure applied to the
casing ID shears the Opening Valve pin and
initiates inflation of the packer element.

Inflated (Set) Position

When proper inflation pressure is
achieved as determined by a choice of Delta
P shear pins, the Delta P valve closes and
permanently locks closed by hydraulic
forces. This step is shown in the Inflated
position drawing.

Locked Set Position

By removing (bleeding) the applied
pressure from the casing ID, the Opening
Valve mechanically separates and
permanently locks in the Closed position
as shown in the Locked Set position drawing.
Optional Inflation Valving Systems
For special applications and well conditions TAM
offers variations of the standard Safe Lok valve system.
These Safe Lok variations include multiple
cycle - non-locking opening valves, check valves in lieu
of the Delta P valve and a Port Collar Inflation Valve
system.
The Port Collar Inflation Valve (PCIV) system
(Patent Pending) uses the field proven TAM Port Full Bore
Casing Drift
Collar as the inflation control mechanism. The PCIV
provides flow area in excess of 2.0 in2 (12.9 cm2) versus
the 0.1 in2 (0.64 cm2) area of the Safe Lok and other
available valve systems. In the Port Collar valve
system, the sliding sleeve mechanically opens and
closes using a Combo Tool or Inflation Tool run on a
Sliding
work string. The Port Collar valve eliminates shock Sleeve
loads from high opening pressure shear pins and
optimizes the flow area in the inflation channel for
cement inflation applications.

of proper gas placement in horizontal
wells. In holes where drastic temperature
changes are expected during production
or remedial operations from static
conditions, an optional gas compensation to
the inflation element reduces the effects
of such changes.
CAP Type versus Temperature

Other Important Operational Advantages

A single TAM CCP can run a range of casing
sizes and weights. Thread types, coupling diame-
ters and exotic casing materials do not affect the
running of this tool. Initiating circulation is fast
and can be achieved regardless of the position of
the casing joint. Unlike competitors’ products it
is not required to set the casing slips, unlatch the 2. TAM CCP Installed

circulation. The CCP can also be used to control 3. Bails, Elevators and
backflow in tight holes where annular clearance Single Pick Up
limits flow alongside the casing. Elevators Installed.
To Fill Casing
To fill the casing, simply pump through the top drive (or
non-top drive TAM adapter) and CCP. When the pumps are
turned off, the check valve inside the packer will close, pre-
venting mud dripping onto the rig floor.

Filling Casing Circulating Casing

Packer Uninflated Packer Inflated

To Circulate the Casing

1. Using the TAM pump, inflate the CCP by moving the
console mounted control valve to the ON position.
NOTE: The output pressure is preset and the pressure
gauge on the control panel will indicate the inflation
pressure in the packer.
2. Apply mud pump pressure. Establish circulation and
then lower casing joint.
3. Set slips; stop circulating.
4. Slowly open a valve on the standpipe manifold back to
the mud pits and leave open.
5. Bleed off the inflate pressure at the TAM pump by
moving the control valve to the OFF position. Allow
the packer to deflate prior to pulling out the casing.
6. Unlatch elevators and pull up.
7. Close valve on stand pipe manifold.
8. Pick up next joint of casing and make up.
9. Stab the CCP into the top of casing joint and latch
elevators.
10. Repeat steps 2 through 9 as required or simply fill the
casing as required.
Ordering Information
An assembly with a 4 1/2” IF box up is standard for all
casing sizes through 30”. Inflation element and guide

check valve prevents possible back
flow. Check Valve
When releasing from the retainer
(six rounds of right-hand rotation of
the work string), a flapper valve
shuts to prevent further communication
through the retainer. Cement may
then be placed above the retainer.

TAMPLUG Operation 1. Run In

The TAMPLUG is simple to run
and also does not require pipe rotation 2. Set
to set. Optional circulating ports
allow the workstring to fill during
run-in. The TAMPLUG can then be
set by circulating a ball to the tool
which closes the circulating ports.
Surface pressure is then applied.
When the preset inflation pressure is
achieved, a valve assembly closes
and locks the pressure in the inflation
element.

Hydraulic Release
For application with restricted
rotation of the workstring or small
inside diameters, the TAM hydraulic
release disconnects without rotation
of the workstring. After the TAM
cement retainer or TAMPLUG is set,
additional hydraulic pressure of a
wiper or ball can be circulated down
to disconnect the workstring.
The TAM hydraulic release works
well with coil or small diameter tub-
ing and simplifies operation in deep
or highly deviated wells.
