6.3.1 SCS4 Spreader Control System

User Manual

1 Bromma Conquip 2013-09 Rev. 02

Bromma Manual

6.3.1.1 Warnings
HAZARD! Always disconnect the power supply before work is carried
out !

The SCS4 shall only be operated and serviced by authorized person-

nel.

Care must be taken when operating the spreader from the SCS4
main unit. It must be carried out under extreme caution and by per-
sonnel familiar with risks related to spreader function and movements.
Serious injury by crushing can occur.

Incorrect handling may cause personal injury or property damage.

SCS4

Actuator
Sensor

The SCS4 spreader control system is apart from being an advanced

PLC also an advanced monitoring and diagnostic tool that gives
service technicians diagnostic information. The spreader is diagnosed
within the CPU, with the most recent events captured on the screen
and stored in the error/event log. Elapsed operating time and elapsed
time since service are also displayed.

2013-09 Rev. 02 Bromma Conquip 2

Bromma Manual

Monitoring and diagnostics can be available in different ways; on the

screen, on the crane, via an external PC or a handheld computer,
depending on configuration.
The SCS4 system reduces electrical connections and minimizes
conventional wiring.
The rugged SCS4 control unit is placed on the spreader for easy
access.

Motor controls

Actuators Sensors (inputs)

(outputs)

Commands are sent from the crane via the SCS4 control unit to the
spreader actuators and motors, resulting in spreader movements.
Sensors send signals back to the system that the movements have
been made. The signals are transferred back to the SCS4 via I/O units,
where they are converted to CANopen and sent back via the control
unit to the crane. All events in the system are logged by the control
unit.

3 Bromma Conquip 2013-09 Rev. 02

Bromma Manual

The SCS4 control unit is a computer equipped with a touch screen

and mounted on the spreader. It is power supplied from the spreader,
24 VDC (18–30 VDC).
Under normal conditions the system runs automatically and the crane
operator can ignore the SCS4 system. The system is intended for
maintenance and troubleshooting by a trained service technician.

Application Data View

Items displayed on the application data view depends on the
configuration of the Spreader. If for example Spreader is equipped
with eight Twistlocks – all of them are displayed. If instead four – only
the four mounted are displayed. The configuration is made in
CoDeSys.

Start/Home Page
SCS4 is mounted on the spreader; therefore the screen is only used
when spreader is idling on the ground, for example if something is
wrong or during service/maintenance. The first page, start page, will
meet the service engineer and show him a brief general status and
list the problems that may have been detected.
Most important and time critical is the list of problems.
Tip When pressing any of the problems detected and
shown in the Error list SCS4 shows the Event List

6.3.1.4 Starting the system

The control unit is normally in standby position, using a externally
connected battery. The battery will be charged by the power from the
spreader as long as the power is on to the spreader. The backlight is
automatically switched off after a certain time of inactivity.
The SCS4 must be connected to power from the spreader via the
crane before it can be operated.
Activate the touch screen by gently pressing it with a clean and dry
finger. If the built-in battery is not charged the start will take longer
time than start from standby position.
• Don’t use sharp or pointed objects on the touch screen since these
can damage or scratch it, which can seriously degrade its
functionality.
• Do not touch the Reset switch when starting! This switch is only
used to restart the device.

CANopen – Overview
CAN (Controller Area Network) is a serial bus system. CANopen is a
CAN-based higher layer protocol. It was developed as a standardized
embedded network with highly flexible configuration capabilities.
The CANopen specifications cover application layer and
communication profile (CiA DS 301), as well as a framework for

2013-09 Rev. 02 Bromma Conquip 32

Bromma Manual

programmable devices (CiA 302), recommendations for cables and

connectors (CiA 303-1) and SI units and prefix representations (CiA
303-2). The application-layer as well as the CAN-based profiles are
implemented in software.
Standardized profiles (device, interface and application profiles)
developed by CiA members simplify the system designer job of
integrating a CANopen network system. Off-the-shelf devices, tools,
and protocol stacks are widely available. For system designers, it is
very important to reuse application software. This requires not only
communication compatibility, but also interoperability and
interchangeability of devices. In the CANopen device and interface
profiles, defined application objects exist to achieve the
interchangeability of CANopen devices. CANopen is flexible and open
enough to enable manufacturer-specific functionality in devices, which
can be added to the generic functionality described in the profiles.
CANopen provides standardized communication objects for real-time
data (Process Data Objects, PDO) and configuration data (Service
Data Objects, SDO).

Damp heat EN 60068-2-30 (Db)
Damp heat cyclic (12 + 12 hours’ cycle), Variant 1, Severity 25 °C…55
°C >90%RH number of cycles = 6. The test EUT is de-energized
during the exposure. During the last two hours of the 55 ºC phase the
test EUT is energized and a functional test are performed.
Plastic housing
UV resistant, stabilizers and inhibitors are required to prevent plastic
degradation. According to ATSM D 2565 / SAE J1960 or similar
standard intended for plastic outdoor/automotive applications.

Chemical and oil resistance, hydraulic oil according to DIN 51524 or

similar, machine oil (petroleum and vegetable oil/fats) and sea
saltwater.
Salt spray test EN 60068-2-52 (Kb) – Additional test procedure
cost may apply -
Severity degree 3 = 1 test cycle.
Physical drop / package drop -Optional-
The EUT shall withstand two (2) pieces of one (1) meter drop onto
concrete floor and the manufacturer should choose the “most
vulnerable” corner. (ISTA Procedure 1A or similar packaging drop
test standard). Function test, after performed test.
The EUT packaged in its normal packaging container/card board box
and dropped 10 times, one drop one a base corner, one drop radiating
from each edge radiating from that corner, and one on each flat face
of the package; a total of 10 impacts, one (1) meter drop onto concrete
floor.
Function test, after preformed test.
