1. Introduction

The Information Technology (IT) sector is a vital industry in today's world. With the rapid
advancement of technology, the sector is constantly evolving and expanding, leading to
an increase in electronic waste (e-waste). E-waste has become a significant environmental
concern, as it contains harmful substances that can cause serious health and
environmental issues if not disposed of properly. The IT sector has a major role to play
in reducing the impact of e-waste on the environment and society.

1.1 Background information on e-waste and the IT sector :

E-waste, or electronic waste, refers to discarded electronic devices and equipment that have
reached the end of their useful life. This includes items such as computers, mobile phones,
televisions, printers, and other electronic devices. The improper disposal of electronic waste
can cause serious environmental and health problems due to the presence of hazardous
materials such as lead, mercury, and cadmium.

The IT sector is one of the largest producers of e-waste, due to the rapid pace of technological
innovation and the constant upgrading and replacement of devices. According to a report by
the United Nations University, the amount of e-waste generated globally is expected to reach
74 million tons by 2030, with the IT sector contributing to a significant portion of that amount.

The production of electronic devices requires the use of scarce natural resources, such as
metals and minerals, as well as energy-intensive manufacturing processes that contribute to
greenhouse gas emissions. The disposal of e-waste also poses a significant challenge, as many
electronic devices are not recycled or disposed of properly, leading to environmental pollution

and health risks for those who come into contact with the waste.e, etc. As infrastructure is
offsite (typically provided by a third-party) and accessed via the Internet, users can connect
from anywhere.

1.2 Importance of selecting a social cause :

Selecting a social cause for a project report is an important decision that can have a
significant impact on the community and environment. One such cause that is becoming
increasingly relevant in the IT sector is e-waste management. E-waste, which refers to
discarded electronic devices such as computers, smartphones, and televisions, is a major
environmental concern due to the toxic chemicals and heavy metals that can be released
when these devices are improperly disposed of.

Therefore, selecting e-waste management as a social cause for a project report can help
raise awareness about this issue and encourage responsible disposal of electronic
devices. When selecting a social cause, it is important to first research and identify an
issue that aligns with your interests and skills. In the case of e-waste management, you
may be interested in environmental sustainability and have skills in technology or data
analysis that can be applied to the project.

Once the social cause has been selected, it is important to set clear objectives and plans
for the project. For example, the objective of a project report on e-waste management
could be to analyze the current state of e-waste management in the IT sector and
identify areas for improvement. Plans could include conducting a literature review of
existing research on e-waste management, collecting data from IT companies and
recycling facilities, and analyzing the data to identify patterns and trends.

During the project, it is common to encounter problems and challenges. For example,
collecting accurate data on e-waste disposal may be difficult due to a lack of
transparency in the recycling industry. In order to address these problems, it is important
to be flexible and adaptable in your approach, and to seek out expert advice or
collaborate with others who have experience in the field.

2. Selection of Social Cause

The world has become increasingly reliant on technology, which has led to a rapid growth in
the production and use of electronic devices. With this growth, however, comes a significant
environmental impact, particularly in the form of electronic waste, or e-waste. E-waste is a
term used to describe discarded electronic devices, including computers, smartphones,
tablets, and other electronic gadgets. The improper disposal of e-waste can have severe
consequences for the environment and human health. As a result, it has become a significant
social and environmental issue.

Given the significance of the issue of e-waste, our project aims to select a social cause in the
IT sector by focusing on the problem of e-waste. The primary objective of our project is to
raise awareness about the issue of e-waste and encourage sustainable practices in the IT
sector. We plan to achieve this objective by conducting research and gathering information
on the topic, creating educational materials and awareness campaigns, and working with IT
companies and industry professionals to implement sustainable practices.

Our plan is to first conduct a thorough analysis of the current state of e-waste in the IT sector.
We will research and gather data on the amount of e-waste generated by the IT sector and the
current disposal practices used by IT companies. We will also investigate the environmental
and health impacts of improper e-waste disposal.

Based on our research, we will develop educational materials and awareness campaigns
aimed at promoting sustainable practices in the IT sector. We will create online and offline
content, including videos, infographics, and brochures, that explain the importance of proper
e-waste disposal and highlight the benefits of sustainable practices. We will also organize
events and workshops aimed at raising awareness and educating people about the issue of
ewaste.

Finally, we will work with IT companies and industry professionals to implement sustainable
practices in the IT sector. We will collaborate with companies to establish e-waste recycling
programs, provide training on sustainable practices, and develop guidelines and best practices

EDE | 2022 -2023

for e-waste disposal. We will also work with policymakers to promote legislation that
encourages sustainable practices and discourages improper e-waste disposal.

Throughout this project, we anticipate encountering several challenges. For example, one
challenge may be the difficulty of convincing IT companies and industry professionals to
adopt sustainable practices due to cost concerns or lack of awareness about the issue. Another
challenge may be the need to develop effective strategies for measuring the impact of our
project.

2.1 Explanation of e-waste as a social cause

Electronic waste, also known as e-waste, is a growing social cause that is impacting the
environment and human health. E-waste is generated by the disposal of electronic
devices and equipment that have reached the end of their useful life, and it contains a
variety of hazardous and non-hazardous materials that can cause harm to the
environment and public health.

In the IT sector, the problem of e-waste is particularly acute because of the rapid pace
of technological innovation and the large volume of electronic devices that are
produced and discarded. Companies that produce and sell electronic devices, such as
smartphones, laptops, and tablets, are often focused on short-term profits and may not
consider the long-term environmental and social impact of their products.

3. Objectives

The objective of selecting a social cause, such as E-waste in the IT sector, is to identify a
problem that affects society and take steps to address it. The IT sector is a major contributor
to E-waste, which refers to discarded electronic devices such as computers, smartphones, and
televisions. The improper disposal of E-waste can have serious environmental and health
consequences, including soil and water contamination, air pollution, and exposure to toxic
chemicals.

1.The first objective of selecting E-waste in the IT sector as a social cause is to raise awareness
about the problem and its impact on the environment and public health. This can be achieved
through various means, such as social media campaigns, public education programs, and
community events. The goal is to help people understand the importance of responsible E-
waste management and encourage them to take action to reduce their own Ewaste footprint.

2.The second objective is to develop a comprehensive plan for managing E-waste in the IT
sector. This plan should include strategies for reducing E-waste at the source, such as through
product design and innovation, as well as for improving the collection, transport, and
recycling of E-waste. The plan should also address the need for effective regulations and
policies to ensure that E-waste is managed responsibly and in compliance with environmental
and health standards.

3.The third objective is to identify and address the challenges and obstacles that may arise in
implementing the plan. For example, there may be technical, financial, or logistical barriers
to the safe and efficient management of E-waste. There may also be social and cultural factors
that influence people's attitudes and behaviors toward E-waste management. By
understanding these challenges and developing solutions to address them, we can increase
the chances of success in achieving our objectives.

3.1 Explanation of how the objectives address e-waste in the IT sector

The objective of selecting a social cause such as e-waste in the IT sector, setting objectives,
plans, and finding problems is an important step towards addressing the issue of e-waste in

DEPT. OF COMPUTER ENGINEERING | GOVT. POLY.

15
HINGOLI
EDE | 2022 -2023

the IT sector. Electronic waste (e-waste) has become a major environmental issue in recent
years, particularly in the IT sector, where there is a high volume of electronic devices and
equipment that are discarded each year.

The selection of e-waste in the IT sector as a social cause is an important step towards
addressing this issue. By raising awareness about the impact of e-waste on the environment
and encouraging the responsible disposal of electronic devices, we can help to reduce the
amount of e-waste that ends up in landfills or is illegally dumped.

Setting objectives is an important part of this process, as it helps to define the goals that we
want to achieve. Objectives could include increasing public awareness about e-waste and its
impact on the environment, promoting the responsible disposal of electronic devices,
reducing the amount of e-waste generated by the IT sector, or developing more sustainable
IT products and practices.

Once objectives have been defined, plans can be developed to achieve them. This may involve
creating educational campaigns to raise awareness about e-waste, establishing recycling
programs for electronic devices, or developing new technologies and practices that reduce
the environmental impact of the IT sector. Plans should be designed to be achievable and
measurable, so that progress can be tracked and adjustments made if necessary.

As with any social cause, there are likely to be challenges and obstacles that need to be
addressed. For example, there may be resistance from companies or individuals who are
resistant to change or who are not aware of the impact of e-waste. Other challenges may
include lack of funding, regulatory barriers, or logistical issues related to the collection and
disposal of electronic devices.

4. Plans
E-waste, or electronic waste, is a growing problem that affects the environment and
human health. The IT sector is one of the major contributors to e-waste due to the rapid
pace of technological advancement and the relatively short lifespan of electronic devices.
Therefore, it is essential to address this issue and take steps to minimize e-waste in the IT
sector.

One way to do this is by selecting a social cause related to e-waste in the IT sector. The
cause could be focused on reducing e-waste generation, promoting e-waste recycling, or
raising awareness about the harmful effects of e-waste on the environment and human
health. Once the social cause is selected, it is important to set objectives and plans to
achieve them.

The following are some objectives and plans that can be considered for the selected social
cause related to e-waste in the IT sector:

1. Objective: To reduce e-waste generation by promoting the use of durable and

ecofriendly electronic devices.

Plans:

1. Conduct a survey to understand consumer preferences and awareness about

ecofriendly electronic devices.
2. Collaborate with electronic manufacturers to produce durable and eco-friendly
electronic devices.
3. Educate consumers about the benefits of using eco-friendly electronic devices
through social media campaigns, advertisements, and events.

2. Objective: To promote e-waste recycling and reduce the amount of e-waste in

landfills.

Plans:
DEPT. OF COMPUTER ENGINEERING | GOVT. POLY.
17
HINGOLI
EDE | 2022 -2023

1. Set up e-waste recycling facilities in collaboration with government agencies and

NGOs.
2. Educate consumers about the importance of e-waste recycling and the proper ways
to dispose of electronic devices through social media campaigns, advertisements,
and events.
3. Implement a reward program for consumers who recycle their electronic devices.

3. Objective: To raise awareness about the harmful effects of e-waste on the

environment and human health.

Plans:

1. Conduct workshops and seminars for students, employees, and the general public
about the harmful effects of e-waste on the environment and human health.
2. Collaborate with schools and universities to include e-waste management in their
curricula.
3. Use social media and other digital platforms to spread awareness about e-waste
and its impact on the environment and human health.

Despite the importance of the selected social cause related to e-waste in the IT sector,
there are some challenges and problems that may arise during the implementation of the
plans. Some of these problems include lack of awareness and education about e-waste,
the high cost of eco-friendly electronic devices, and the lack of proper infrastructure for
e-waste recycling. To overcome these challenges, it is important to collaborate with
relevant stakeholders, such as government agencies, NGOs, electronic manufacturers, and
consumers, to develop effective solutions. By working together, we can create a
sustainable and eco-friendly IT sector that minimizes e-waste and protects the
environment and human health.AWS currently has 26 regions and 84 availability zones

5. Problems/Bugs

5.1 Identification of the problems faced during the project

Selecting a social cause such as E-waste in the IT sector can be a challenging project for
several reasons. One of the primary challenges is identifying the objectives and goals of the
project. Without clear objectives, the project may lack focus and direction, making it difficult
to achieve meaningful results. Additionally, it may be difficult to develop plans that are
effective in addressing the issue at hand without a clear understanding of the goals of the
project.

Another challenge in this project is finding problems related to E-waste in the IT sector. While
E-waste is a growing concern worldwide, identifying specific problems related to E-waste in
the IT sector can be challenging. There may be a lack of research on this topic or a lack of
understanding of the problem by stakeholders in the IT industry. Additionally, identifying
potential solutions to these problems may be difficult without a clear understanding of the
challenges faced.

Another challenge in this project may be identifying stakeholders and engaging them in the
project. Effective stakeholder engagement is critical to the success of any social cause project,
as stakeholders can provide valuable insights and perspectives that can help inform the
project's direction and goals. However, identifying and engaging stakeholders can be difficult,
particularly if they are not aware of the problem or do not see the value in the project.

Finally, one of the biggest challenges in this project may be implementing effective solutions.
Even if the problems are identified and plans are developed, implementing effective solutions
can be a significant challenge. This may be due to a lack of resources, a lack of support from
stakeholders, or a lack of political will. Additionally, there may be legal or regulatory barriers
to implementing certain solutions.

In conclusion, selecting a social cause such as E-waste in the IT sector can be a challenging
project that requires careful planning and stakeholder engagement. It is important to identify
clear objectives and goals, as well as potential problems, and develop effective plans to
address them. Additionally, implementing effective solutions can be a significant challenge

5.2 Explanation of how the problems were addressed and solved

Selecting a social cause is an important first step in addressing a problem. In this case, we
have chosen the cause of e-waste in the IT sector. E-waste, or electronic waste, refers to
discarded electronic devices such as computers, mobile phones, and other electronic
devices that are no longer in use. These devices contain hazardous materials that can harm
the environment and human health if not disposed of properly.

To address this problem, we first set our objectives. Our main objective is to reduce the
amount of e-waste generated in the IT sector by promoting responsible e-waste
management practices. Specifically, we aim to:

1. Raise awareness among IT professionals and the general public about the
environmental and health risks associated with improper e-waste disposal.
2. Encourage the adoption of best practices in e-waste management, such as
recycling and proper disposal.
3. Work with IT companies to develop sustainable e-waste management strategies
and policies.

To achieve these objectives, we have developed a detailed plan. First, we will conduct
research to understand the scope and scale of the e-waste problem in the IT sector. This
research will involve collecting data on e-waste generation rates, current e-waste
management practices, and the environmental and health impacts of improper disposal.

Based on the findings of our research, we will develop educational materials and outreach
programs to raise awareness about the e-waste problem and promote responsible e-waste
management practices. These educational materials will target IT professionals, as well
as the general public, and will be disseminated through social media, online forums, and
other channels.

In addition, we will work with IT companies to develop sustainable e-waste management

strategies and policies. This will involve collaborating with industry leaders to develop
best practices for e-waste management, as well as advocating for policies that promote
responsible e-waste management.

Throughout our efforts, we anticipate encountering several challenges. One of the biggest
challenges will be changing existing attitudes and behaviors around e-waste disposal.
Many people are not aware of the environmental and health risks associated with
improper disposal, and changing these attitudes will require a concerted effort on our part.

Another challenge will be working with IT companies to develop sustainable e-waste

management strategies and policies. This will require building relationships with industry
leaders and convincing them of the benefits of responsible e-waste management.

In summary, addressing the problem of e-waste in the IT sector requires a multi-pronged

approach. By setting clear objectives, developing a detailed plan, and anticipating
potential challenges, we can work to reduce the amount of e-waste generated in the IT
sector and promote responsible e-waste management practices.
