LABORATORY EXERCISE 1

Introduction to Aquaculture

Aquaculture is the science of raising aquatic species (e.g. fish, shellfish, algae, etc.) in
freshwater, brackish and saltwater areas for commercial production. The components of
aquaculture may include water quality, breeding, genetics, feeds and feeding, formulation
and nutrition, diseases and predator management, etc. The biological characteristics of fish
species ideal for culture include faster growth rate, age at sexual maturity, can be bred
under captivity, high fecundity and frequency of spawning, short incubation period, adapts
to artificial feeding and extreme environment and culture conditions, and high market
demand, etc.

Objectives:
1. Determine different fish species and bodies of water suitable for aquaculture.
2. Learn the different kinds and systems of aquaculture production.

Methodology:
1. Enumerate different water bodies that can be used for aquaculture. Include a picture
of each on a separate page.

aquaculture
1.Recirculating closed-loop systems that minimize water interchange
Aquaculture System and lessen environmental effects by recycling and
treating water in a regulated setting.
2. Raceway System Water-flowing channels made of concrete or fiberglass
are frequently used to culture freshwater fish like
salmon and trout.
3. Land- Based a hybrid of hydroponics and aquaculture, in which fish
Aquaponics excrement serves as fertilizer for plants grown without
the use of soil.

Types of aquaculture Description

1. Pond Aquaculture Earthen Ponds - Conventional ponds excavated into the
earth, usually utilized for the culture of freshwater fish
such as catfish, carp, and tilapia.
Lined Ponds - Usually found in regions with rocky or
sandy terrain, lined ponds use impermeable liners to
stop water seepage.
Ponds in coastal locations that have a mix of freshwater
and saltwater are called brackishwater ponds, and they
are good for raising brackishwater species like milkfish
and shrimp.
2. Cage Aquaculture Floating Cages - Fish farming techniques such as salmon,
trout, seabass, and seabream are carried out using net
cages suspended in open water bodies like lakes, rivers,
and coastal locations.
Submersible Cages - These cages provide for more
control over fish behavior and environmental
circumstances because they are attached to the seabed
and submerged at different depths.
3. Offshore Open ocean waters, distant from the coast, are used for
Aquaculture aquaculture operations in order to reduce conflicts with
other marine industries and to take advantage of
deeper, more productive habitats.
4. Intergrated Multi- a sustainable strategy that mixes the raising of several
Trophic Aquaculture species that play complimentary functions in the
environment.
5. Mariculture a sustainable strategy that mixes the raising of several
species that play complimentary functions in the
environment.
Questions:
1. Differentiate aquaculture from capture fishery.
Organized aquaculture from the point of final commercial production. Fish,
mollusks, crustaceans, and aquatic plants are among the aquatic creatures that are
farmed in aquaculture. Capture Fishery harvest aquatic plants without having to
plant the number of wild fish caught and landed for commercial, industrial,
recreational, and subsistence uses is known as capture fishery production.

2. Differentiate freshwater, brackish water and saltwater environment.

Low salt concentrations—typically less than 0.5 parts per thousand—found in
freshwater habitats, like lakes and rivers, are home to a variety of fish, amphibian,
insect, and aquatic plant communities. The intermediate salinity levels of brackish
water ecosystems, such as estuaries and coastal lagoons, range from 0.5 to 30 parts
per thousand. Here, specialized species, such as certain crabs, mullet, and shrimp,
flourish in the constantly shifting balance of fresh and saltwater. A vast range of
marine life, including fish, marine mammals, corals, and sea turtles, find a home in
saltwater settings, such as oceans and seas, when salt concentrations are more than
thirty parts per thousand.
