area of a circle

Basic Circle Vocabulary

A _____________________ is the set of all points in a plane that are a given distance

from a given point in that plane.

The given point is called the _____________________ of the circle.

Each segment connecting the center to the edge of the circle is the same length.

Those segments are called _________________________.

The segment that goes through the center AND has two endpoints on the circle

is called the __________________________.

Using the circle to the right, name any radii, diameters & the center of the circle:

There is a relationship between the lengths of the diameters and the radii. Each radius is exactly half of
1
the diameter. More specifically, d = 2r or d = r.
2
In #’s 1 – 4, use the given diameter to find the radius.

~ Composite & Irregular Figures ~
TLW develop and apply the formulas for the area of
shaded regions

TLW develop and apply ways of finding area and

perimeter of irregular figures

Use the Area Addition Postulate to find the areas of

composite figures.

A tangram is an ancient Chinese puzzle made

from a square. The pieces can be rearranged to
form many different shapes. The area of a
figure made with all the pieces is the sum of
the areas of the pieces.
Those guys over there are some examples of
tangrams.

So, what does this have to do with your math class … well funny you should ask…

This idea is what we use to find the area of irregular looking figures.

A composite figure is made up of simple shapes, such as triangles, rectangles, trapezoids, and
circles. To find the area of a composite figure, find the areas of the simple shapes and then use
the Area Addition Postulate.

A garden in a backyard has the following dimensions.

Irregular Figures such as this one, is an example of using the
Area Addition Postulate. Additionally, these types of figures
are the most fun areas to find.
