PART A
Answer any twofull questions, each carries 15 marks

I a) List out the Major soil deposits in India. 5

b) The natural soil sample has a bulk density of 2glcc with a water content of 6%u l0
Calculate the amount of water to be added to lm3 of soil to raise the water
content to l5%o while the voids ratio remains the same. What is then. the desree
of saturation? Take G=2.67.
2 a) With the help of a gradation curve, differentiate between Well graded, Poorly 5
graded, Uniformly graded and Gap graded soil.

b) A soil has liquid limit of 25%o and flow index of 12.5o/o.If the plastic limit is l0
l5%o, determine the plasticity index, toughness index, liquidity index and
consistency index for a Natural Moisture Content (NMC) of 20%o.

3 a) The mass of a chunk of moist soil is 20kg and its volume is 0.011m3. After l0
drying in an oven, the mass reduces to l6.5kg. Determine the water contento
density of moist soil, dry density, voids ratio, porosity, and degree of saturation.

b) A sample of sand has a volume of l000ml in its natural state. Its minimum
volume when compacted is 840m1. When gently poured in a measuring cylinder,
its maximum volume is found to be l370ml. Find the relative density. ,

4a) List out the factors affecting the permeability of soil. 5

b) An excavation is to be performed in a stratum of clay 9m thick clay underlain by l0

a bed of sand. In a trial bore hole, the ground water is observed to rise upto an

elevation of 3m below ground surface. Find the depth upto which the
excavation can be safelycarried out without the bottom becoming unstable
under uplift pressure of groundwater. G:2.7 and e :0.70. If the excavation is to
be safely carried to a depth of 7m, how much should the water table be lowered
in the vicinitv of the trench?

5 a) State any 5 merits of the Triaxial test compared to the Direct shear test

b) A cylindrical sample of soil having a cohesion of 80kPa and an angle of l0

intemal friction 20o is subjected to a cell (confining) pressure of lOOkPa.
Determine the maximum deviator stress at which the sample fails and also the
angle made by the failure plane with the Major Principal Plane.

6 a) A horizontal stratified soil deposit consists of three layers, each uniform in 7

itself. The permeabilities of the layers are 4xl0-4, 25x10-4,7.5x10-a mm/s. Their
thicknesses are 6m, 3m and 12m respectively. Find the average permeability on
the horizontal and vertical directions separately.

b) A lab vane shear test was performed in a UDS of soft clay and it was found to 8
have a failure torque of I lNmm. The sample was then completely disturbed by
rotating rapidly and the soil thus remoulded failed at a torque of 4.5Nmm.
Determine the sensitivitv of the clay. The vane has D=6.3mm and H:l l.3mm.

volume change is 0.058x10-2 m2lkN. Find the coefficient of consolidation.

t b) A Normally Consolidated Clay (NCC) settled 2cm when the effective stress 5
was increased from lOOkPa to 200kPa. Find the settlement when the effective
stress is increased to 400kPa.

c) With a neat sketch, explain the determination of Coefficient of consolidation l0

using Log-t method.
*
8 a) -;'

density up to the Optimum Moisture content and later on the decrease.

b) Differentiate between Toe failure, Slip failure and Base failure with the help of 6
neat sketches.

c) With a neat sketch, explain the friction circle method for determining Factor of l0
