1. A 3-phase, 10 HP squirrel cage induction motor is wound for 6 poles. When the motor is
connected to 230 V, 50 Hz supply, at full load, it operates at 4% slip. Determine (i) full-load
speed (ii) full-load torque in Nm (iii) frequency of rotor current under this condition and (iv)
speed of rotation of the stator mmf.

2. Power to an induction motor is supplied by a 12-pole, 3-phase, 500 rpm alternator. The
full-load speed of the motor is 1440 rpm. Find the (i) percentage slip and (ii) number of poles

3. The resistance and standstill reactance per phase of a 3-phase induction motor is 0.1 Ω and

are short-circuited (ii) slip-rings are connected to a star-connected rheostat of 3 Ω per phase.

5. A 10 HP, 4-pole, 25 Hz, 3-phase, wound rotor induction motor is taking 9100 W from the
line. Core loss is 290 W, stator copper loss is 568 W, rotor copper loss is 445 W, friction and
windage losses are 100 W. Determine (i) power transferred across the air-gap (ii) mechanical
power developed by rotor (iii) mechanical power output (iv) efficiency (v) slip.

6. A 60 HP, 6-pole, 3-phase induction motor delivers load output at 960 rpm at 0.8 pf when
supplied with 400 V, 50 Hz supply. Losses due to windage and friction come to 3 HP and the
stator losses are 2 kW. Find out (i) total rotor copper loss (ii) efficiency and (iii) line current.
Ans: (i) 1931 W (ii) 87.79% (iii) 90.67 A.
7. A 4-pole, 50 Hz, 3-phase induction motor has an efficiency of 85% for useful output power
at the shaft of 17 kW. For this load, the total stator losses are 900 W and the windage and
friction losses are 1100 W. Calculate the slip, torque developed by the rotor and torque
available at the rotor shaft.

8. The impedance of the rotor circuit at standstill of a 1000 HP, 3-phase, 16-pole induction
motor is (0.02 + j0.15) Ω. It develops full-load torque at 360 rpm. What will be (i) the ratio of
maximum to full-load torque (ii) the speed at maximum torque (iii) the rotor resistance to be
added to get maximum starting torque?

9. A 4-pole, 3-phase, 50 Hz induction motor has resistance and standstill reactance of 0.03 Ω
and 0.12 Ω per phase respectively. Find the amount of rotor resistance per phase to be
inserted to obtain 75% of maximum torque at start.

10. When no-load and blocked-rotor tests are performed on a 3-phase, 400 V, 50 Hz, star-
connected induction motor, the following results are obtained:
No-load test : 400 V, 8.5 A, 1100 W
Blocked-rotor test : 180 V, 45 A, 5700 W
Draw the circle diagram and estimate (i) the line current and (ii) power factor of the motor
when operating at 4% slip. The stator resistance per phase is measured as 0.5 Ω.

11. Determine the starting torque of a 3-phase induction motor in terms of full-load torque
when started by means of (i) star-delta starter (ii) an auto-transformer starter with 50%
tapings. The motor draws a starting current of 5 times the full-load current when started
direct-on-line. The full-load slip is 4%.

12. A 400 V, 3-phase, star-connected induction motor draws 40 A at a line voltage of 80 V
with rotor locked. The power drawn by the motor under this condition is 480 W, the dc
resistance measured between a pair of stator terminals is 0.2 Ω. If the core loss is 80 W and
the ratio of ac to dc resistance is 1.4, determine (i) the equivalent leakage reactance per phase
of the motor (ii) the stator resistance per phase and (iii) the rotor resistance per phase.
Ans: (i) 1.087 Ω (ii) 0.14 Ω (iii) 0.11 Ω.
13. The following are the parameters of a 230 V, 50 Hz, 4-pole single-phase induction motor:
R1 = 2.2 Ω, X1 = 3 Ω, R2’ = 3.8 Ω, X2’ = 2.1 Ω, Xm = 86 Ω.
Claculate the (i) input current and (ii) power when the motor is operating at full-load speed of
1410 rpm. If the mechanical losses (iron and friction loss) are 60 W, determine (iii) gross
power developed, (iv) useful power at the shaft, (v) shaft torque and (vi) efficiency.

14. The parameters of the main and starting winding of a 240 V, 50 Hz split-phase induction
motor are given as:
Main winding: Rm = 6 Ω; Xm = 8 Ω
Starting winding: Rs = 8 Ω; Xs = 6 Ω.
Determine (i) current in the main winding (ii) current in the starting winding (iii) phase
angle between Im and Is (iv) line current and pf of the motor (v) power drawn by the motor.
