SECOND SEMESTER 2018-2019

Comprehensive Examination
Part - B

Course No: PHY F316 Total Marks: 60

Course Title: Non-linear Dynamics and Chaos
Date: December 12th, 2019 Max. Time: 3 hours

1. Modelling the defence budget of India and Pakistan:

Consider x to be the defence budget of India and y to be the defence budget of Pakistan. The
rate of change of the budget is influenced by the parameters a , b , c , d which describe the
extent to which the existing stock of weapons, fighter jets and so on influence the buying of
new ones.
d x
dt y( ) ( )( ) ( )
=
a b x g
c d y
+
f

The parameters g and f represent distrust felt by India towards Pakistan and Pakistan towards
India, respectively and therefore a propensity to build the weapons stockpile.

(a) Assuming that g = 1 and f = 1, find the set of parameters a , b , c , d for which the model
provides a unique fixed point. [5]

(b) In the absence of distrust determine the fixed point and the condition on the parameters if the
fixed point is to be stable. [5]

(c) Under the assumptions that g= f = 1 and a = d = 0.2, find the values for b and c so that the
system has a unique fixed point that is a stable spiral. [5]

(d) Sketch the phase portrait in the neighbourhood of the fixed point. Based on the parameter
values comment on the military policy of Pakistan and India. Is the solution practical? [5]

2. The following system has a fixed point at (0,0):

x 3
ẋ= y + α −x ; ẏ=−x , where α > 0

a) What can you conclude from the linear stability analysis at (0,0)? [5]
b) Is this system dissipative? [2]
1 4 1 2
c) Does L ( x , y )= x + y , satisfy the criteria for such Lyapunov function? [5]
4 2
d) Using L(x , y ) discuss the stability of the system. [5]
e) What happens to the system’s dynamics when α=0? [3]

3. For the logistic map modelling growth of a population, x n+1=r x n ( 1−x n ), where r represents
the growth rate and has values between 0 < r < 4.

a) Determine the fixed points for all r. [5]

b) Determine the stability of the fixed points found in a). [5]
c) In a single cobweb diagram, plot for r < 1, 1 < r < 3, r > 3. [You don’t have to make
the cobweb, just draw the function and the straight line from the origin at 450] [5]
d) Choose an initial condition, and draw the cobweb diagram for r > 3. What can you
conclude? [5]
