Group-4 Statistics
Group-4 Statistics
A. Descriptive statistics
1. Mean
Mean is an average of a set of values, calculated by summing up numbers and dividing by the total count.
It is a crucial statistical measure that provides insight into the expected outcome when comparing data
points. It should not be interpreted in isolation and does not guarantee future results.
Example:
Getting the average age of their employees.
There are five employees in Juan’s restaurant with the following ages: 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40.
Solution:
20 + 25 + 30 + 35 + 40 = 150
150 ÷ 5 = 30
The average age of Juan’s employees is 30. This is the mean of the data set.
2. Median
The median is the middle value in a sorted set of numerical data. This indicates that half of the values are
less than the median value and half are greater than the median value. When identifying the median, the
data is to be sorted in ascending order and the centermost value is referred to as the median.
Example:
The price range of the crochet business Miyukipuffs for their crocheted items: ₱40, ₱45,
₱50, ₱60, ₱65. The median of the data set is ₱50. This is determined as the data is arranged in an
ascending order and ₱50 is the center value.
3. Mode
The mode in statistics refers to a number in a set of numbers that repeats or occurs more often. It may
have one mode, two or more modes, or no mode at all. It shows the difference between the greatest and
least numbers in the given data set.
Example:
A shoe company identifying what appropriate men's shoe size to sell in the market.
The company conducted an online survey regarding the men's shoe size and got:
39,41,37,41,47,45,41,39,45,39,37,41,42,43,41,45,47,50,49,40.
The mode or most frequent value in the survey relating to shoe size is 41 since out of 20
answers, it appeared 5 times.
4. Standard Deviation
The variability of the data set is determined by the standard deviation, which describes the
dispersion or scatter of the data concerning the mean. There is a higher standard deviation when the
data is further from the mean. This is because the more the data is scattered, the higher the standard
deviation.
Example:
Standard deviation of a set of data representing the daily temperatures (in degrees Celsius)
in a city over the course of a week.
The daily temperature (in degrees Celsius) accumulated over the course of a week is:
{20, 22, 19, 25, 21, 23, 18}
To find the standard deviation, we first calculate the mean (average) temperature:
20 + 22 + 19 + 25 + 21 + 23 + 18 = 148
148 ÷ 7 = 21.14
Then, we calculate the variance, which is the average of the squared differences from the mean
which is approximately 5.138.
Finally, the standard deviation is the square root of the variance:
2.27
So, the standard deviation of the daily temperatures over the week is approximately 2.27 °C.
A larger standard deviation suggests that the weather in this city during that week was more
unpredictable or variable, with greater fluctuations in temperature from day to day. On the other
hand, a smaller standard deviation would imply more consistent temperatures throughout the
week.
So, in this context, the standard deviation helps us understand the consistency or variability in the
daily temperatures over the week.
5. Homogeneous
Homogeneous refers to the uniformity of the data within a population. The data is referred to as
homogeneous if it has similarities and identical characteristics. It is homogeneous if it is drawn from
the same population or source.
Example:
A research survey was conducted among the students of Grade 11 - Fortitude where five
female students were interviewed. The data gathered in the interview is homogeneous as the
data came from a single population with similar characteristics namely grade level, section, and
gender.
6. Heterogeneous
A data set that contains a diverse set of characteristics and features is considered heterogeneous.
Heterogeneous refers to the data sets’ diversity and differences. It is the opposite of homogeneous
which indicates that the part of a whole is different.
Example:
Maria was at a fast-food chain, and she ordered the following for her family: Spaghetti,
Chicken, Burger Steak, and Soda drinks. The data set is an example of a heterogeneous data
set as each food Maria chose has different characteristics and properties including the food type,
taste, and texture.
B. Data
1. Categorical Data
Table 1. Distribution of Players for Each Role of Mobile Legends

Mobile Legends
The data provided presents the insight into the total of time students spend playing Mobile Legends. On
average, students spend 3.12 hours playing the game, with 1 hour being the most often mentioned duration.
However, there is a remarkable variability in the data, as indicated by the standard deviation of 2.46 hours. The
range of time spent playing Mobile Legends spans from a minimum of 0.5 hours to a maximum of 10 hours,
indicating a wide range of levels among the student population.

C. Reflection
This performance task honed everyone to become a better learner through different aspects. Each member
gained experience and skills throughout the process of creating the task and showcased improvement in
statistics. We were able to finish this through hard work and collaboration that is collectively done by the group.
Considering the time needed to accomplish this portfolio together with the other performance tasks, each
member faced the hurdle of handling their time efficiently. Each of us, however, learned how to balance doing
different tasks and make sure we were still able to provide a good output. This task taught everyone what it
means to be a competent and committed learner as everyone continued to be determined to accomplish this
portfolio despite the circumstances.
Moreover, the task taught us to use what we have learned from past discussions to produce the output. From
the descriptive statistics definition and examples to the data presentation, everyone contributed to the part that
they were assigned to. Through this, we were able to improve our skills in using Excel and presenting, analyzing,
and interpreting data. We also acquired the skill of taking what we have learned and explaining it in our own
words. We all learned to demonstrate the knowledge and skills that we acquired and use it to create this
performance task.
During the process, everyone showed what it takes to be a collaborative learner. Each member provided insights
and suggestions making brainstorming successful. As this task required many details, we learned to cooperate
and participate well to make sure we were able to finish on time. We learned to trust each other and appreciate
