Beams Tutorial

The document provides instructions for solving beam loading and support reaction problems. It includes steps to draw labeled diagrams of the beam, calculate reactions, shear forces, bending moments, and draw the corresponding diagrams. It also defines relevant beam concepts. An example beam problem is given to demonstrate the process.

BEAMS TUTORIAL

Due date : 15 May 2024

4.2.1. Draw a fully labelled diagram of the beam indicating all the loads. [2]

4.2.2. Calculate the reactions at the supports and test your answers. [6]

4.2.3. Draw a fully labelled shear force diagram and indicate all the main values. [4]

4.2.4. Calculate the bending moments at A, B, C, D and E. [4]

4.2.5. Calculate the magnitude and position of the maximum bending moment. [5]

4.2.6. Draw a fully labelled bending moment diagram and indicate all the main values. [5]

4.3. State the following:

4.3.1. Law of moments [2]

4.3.2. Two conditions of equilibrium which a beams follows [4]

4.3.4. Shearing force [2]

4.3.5. Bending moment [2]

4.4. A light uniform beam is 10 m long and has a mass of 150 kg/m. It is horizontal and rests on two
supports, one 2m from the left end and the other one at 1m from the right end. Consider the following
loads that the beam carries and then answer the questions which follow.

A point load of 450 N, 1m from the left end

A concentrated load of 700 N , 4m from the left end

A uniformly distributed load of 20 N/m between the 700 N and the support from the right end

4.4.1. Calculate the reactions at the supports [6]

4.4.2. Draw a fully labelled shear force diagram. ALL THE MAIN VALUES MUST BE

INDICATED ON THE DIAGRAM [4]

4.3.3. Determine the bending moments at 400 N, 700 N and at the supports [5]

4.3.4. Draw a fully labelled bending diagram. ALL THE MAIN VALUES MUST BE

INDICATED ON THE DIAGRAM [5]
