Learning Outcomes:

1. Illustrate the different types of conic

sections: parabola, ellipse, circle,
hyperbola, and degenerate cases.
2. Define a circle.
3. Determine the standard form of equation
of a circle.
What is a Conic Section?

Definition: A conic section (or conic)

is a curve formed by a plane passing
through a double-napped circular cone.
• Ellipse – Formed when the
intersection of the cone and
plane is a bounded curve
and the plane is NOT
perpendicular to the axis of
the cone.
• Circle – Formed when the
intersection of the cone and
plane is a bounded curve
and the plane is
perpendicular to the axis of
the cone.
• Parabola -
when the plane
intersects only
one cone to
form an
unbounded
curve.
• Hyperbola –
when the plane
(not necessarily
vertical) intersects
both cones to form
two unbounded
curves (each
called a branch of
the hyperbola)
Degenerate Cases:
• A point
• A one line
• Two lines
Recall:
Given two points in the Cartesian plane
𝐴(𝑥$ , 𝑦$ ) and 𝐵 𝑥) , 𝑦) .

Distance Formula:
𝑑) = 𝑥) − 𝑥$ )
+ 𝑦) − 𝑦$ )

Midpoint Formula:
𝑥) + 𝑥$ 𝑦) + 𝑦$
𝑀 𝑥, 𝑦 = ,
2 2
Example:

• What is the distance between two points 𝐴(1,4) and

𝐵(2, −3).

• Solution:
Example:

What is the midpoint between two points

𝐴(1,4) and 𝐵(2, −3).
Solution:
Try this!
Linda needs to meet with her lawyer Sam. Linda is at her
house located at the coordinate (−4, 2) while Sam is at (6,
4). It would cost them too much gas money if one of them
has to go to the other persons’ place. They decided to meet
half way. At what coordinate should Linda and Sam meet?
What is the distance from their location to the meeting
place?
Circle

Definition: A circle is a set

of all points on a plane that
are equidistant from a
point on a plane. The fixed
point is called the center,
and the distance from the
center to any point of the
circle is referred to as the
radius.
Definition:

Let the center of a circle be at the fixed

point 𝐶(ℎ, 𝑘) and the radius is r. If
𝑃(𝑥, 𝑦) is any point on the circle, then
the equation of the circle is given by

Note:
Ø If 𝑟 ) < 0, the equation has no graph.
Ø If 𝑟 ) = 0, the equation represents a point.
Ø If 𝑟 ) > 0, the equation represents a circle.
Example: Determine the standard form of the
equation of the circle.

Solution:
a. 𝑥 ) + 𝑦 ) = 25
) )
b. 𝑥+2 + 𝑦−5 =3

c. Center: , = 6, −1
) )

Radius: 𝑟= 8−6 ) + −7 − (−1) ) = 2) + −6 ) = 40

Equation: 𝑥−6 ) + 𝑦+1 ) = 40
Determine the standard form of the equation of
the circle, its center and radius.

a. 𝑥 ) + 𝑦 ) − 6𝑥 = 7
Solution:

Center: (3,0); radius: 4

Determine the standard form of the equation of the circle,
its center and radius.
