Abstract

The present study used the Transition Theory to explore the struggles of five freshmen students on how
they face the challenges of being students who have a misaligned college course from what they have
taken on their Senior High School years. Researchers used an in-depth semi-structured interview as a tool
in gathering data. Participants were identified using snowball sampling. Interviews were transcribed for
the data analysis. Researchers were guided with the thematic analysis which includes reading and re-
reading of the transcript, initial coding, developing the master themes, searching for review of related
literature for the master themes, moving to the next case, and looking for patterns across defined cases.
After several reading and data analysis, six themes about the experienced struggles and coping
mechanisms emerged from the data: (1) Change in academic environment, (2) Inconsistency of directed
academic path, (3) Insufficiency of ability, (4) Resorting to academic organizations, (5) Positive
influential environment, and (6) Self-reliance.
