Institute of Computing Studies Laboratory Manual 2017
The Computer Center of Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State
College was established to provide the uppermost
superiority of service reactive to and meeting the
information needs of both academic society and
administrative units in the college.
The role of the center is to administer the laboratory
hands on of students through strategic allocation for
college, laboratory reservation processing and by
monitoring
Computer laboratory work is a very important part of
the learning process. Watching and performing activities
are entirely different. It is the place of the programmers,
network administrator and designers. This is the place where
they test their hypotheses, validate their findings and
formulate theories. This is the place where scientific formulas
and laws are developed and established.
For students, the laboratory is the work shop, a place
where scientific evidences, concepts and principles are
observed and basic laboratory techniques are learned
including record keeping, accurate measurements and
report writing.
The computer center closely coordinates with the
school’s supply office for supply and maintenance of
computers and related equipment. The computer center
also coordinates with the physical Facilities Office for
laboratory maintenance. Computer Center is being
managed by the computer center in Charge, the
laboratory Assistants, and the students Assistants.

Laboratory Operations
Prioritization of Users
At all times, students with schedule computer
laboratory classes are given priority over those who doesn’t
have schedules from Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
They are not allowed to use the computer laboratory rooms
during weekdays expect night time.
Instructors are not allowed to use computers if there
are scheduled students. They are only given a slot if there
are available computers.
Computer Classes
During computer classes, the instructor is responsible
for all his/her student. Should there be available computer,
he/she will allow users who are asking for free slot during
computer classes. It is advised that any who wishes to make

use of any vacant computer unit should seek approval from
the in-charge of the computer center.
Only upon approval of the in-charge of the computer
center allow the free slots. If there aren’t enough
workstations for the class, all free slots will be requested to
log out.
Computer configuration
No one is allowed to alter the setting or configuration
of the facilities in the laboratory (e.g. computers and air
conditioners). Only those duly authorized by the in-charge
of the computer center may be able to do so. A user caught
changing the configuration of the computers and related
equipment without due permission from the in-charge of the
computer center will not be allowed to avail of free slots for
the rest of the term in all laboratory rooms. If the offence is
committed during or after the tenth week of a term, he/she
will not be permitted to avail of free slots in the next term.

stays by his/her workstation, until or before, the time slots
expire. Accommodation is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Should there be more students in the class and not
enough computer workstation for them, the instructor can
assign two (2) user per workstation if it is approved by the in-
charge of the computer center. In cases where the air-
conditioned unit breaks down or malfunction, a maximum
of one (1) user per workstation should be observed.
Tag Numbers
Upon logging in, the user should always fall on the
corresponding workstation in which he/she is assigned. The
user is responsible for any damage or mal-function that were
not recorded during the starting shift, which may transpire
with the computer. During his/her usage. The user is advised
to be careful of their tag number. Should the user damage
or lose the tag, he/she will be fined P50.00.

Institute of Computing Studies Laboratory Manual 2017
Regular Slots/Classes
Upon entry, the user surrenders his/her ID to the
instructor on duty. In case the user lost his/her ID, the
Instructor may require the user to surrender his/her
enrolment form together with his/her official receipt to verify
if he/she is authorized to use the laboratory. The Instructor on
duty assigns the workstation to the user by providing the
corresponding tag number. The user stays by his/her
workstation until, or before, the time slot expires. The
Instructor on duty may accommodate free slots, upon
approval of the faculty, after the first third of the time period

FIRST AID AND
EMERGENCY MEASURES
Any untoward incidents in the laboratory – accidents,
leaks, breakages – must be reported immediately to the
laboratory instructor.
In case of accidents, there is a need to be familiar with
the following first aid procedures:
38
Institute of Computing Studies Laboratory Manual 2017
Serious cuts. See a doctor immediately but sure to
check the bleeding by applying pressure with a sterile
pad over the wounded area.
Fires from burning clothing. Stay calm. Do not run nor
panic. Use a wet laboratory gown to put off the fire.
Water may also be used. Use vinegar for alkalis.
Thermal burns. Apply ice on the burnt area for a few
minutes. Cold water may also be used in the absence
of ice. Do not apply any bandage or ointment. In a
severe burn, call a doctor immediately.
Fires from burning reagents. Use a damp or wet cloth
to cover the mouth of the burning vessel. This should
be done to extinguish the fire and prevent it from
spreading. Turn off all gas
burners. Use a fire extinguisher or dry sand for larger
fires.
Poisoning by Swallowing. Drink plenty of water
immediately to dilute the poison. Then neutralize the
poison depending on the nature of the poison that
was swallowed. For acids, use milk of magnesia.
Other types of poisons. Let the victim vomit by giving
him one glass of two tablespoons of tablet salt
dissolved in lukewarm water. This should be
continuously administered to the poisoned victim until
the expelled liquid is clear.
Eye Accidents. Wash the eyes with a large amount of
water. Do not apply any chemical to the eyes for this
may result to deeper burns as caused by the heat of
reaction.

Electrical Shock. Remove the source of shock
immediately. Be sure to use a dry towel when
removing or holding live wires or electrical equipment.
Administer artificial respiration right away if the victim
is not breathing.
