Introduction

Today, computers are extremely imperative in the

modern world. They provide tremendous significance in the
era of computing. Without it, many will be crippled and
affect tremendously the work in every field of specialization.
The great magnitude of computers cannot be denied in
business enterprise or any work place where electronic
device is found.
Pen and paper are becoming extinct in a modern
work place. Most preferred to use is the magic touch of their
fingers to produce best result of their outputs. A few years
from now, pen and paper will stop existing. Some children
nowadays are using high-tech gadgets; they even forget
how to spell correctly. The fear of educators is that children
of tomorrow may not even know how to use a pen and
some having bad penmanship. The presence of computer
affectively assists students in their homework and other
required information asked by their mentors.
Computer provides a very important role in keeping
data, track records and filling system. It is easier to keep
accounts and records that is ever was. Through this device
it helps organizations in saving a lot of times and data
analysis becomes extremely simple, and through the power
of the index finger to the mouse, work becomes easier as it
was. The essentiality of computer extends beyond
expectation. From a simple secretarial undertaking to a
scientific formula combination.

Institute of Computing Studies Laboratory Manual 2017
The Computer Center of Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State
College was established to provide the uppermost
superiority of service reactive to and meeting the
information needs of both academic society and
administrative units in the college.
The role of the center is to administer the laboratory
hands on of students through strategic allocation for
college, laboratory reservation processing and by
monitoring
Computer laboratory work is a very important part of
the learning process. Watching and performing activities
are entirely different. It is the place of the programmers,
network administrator and designers. This is the place where
they test their hypotheses, validate their findings and
formulate theories. This is the place where scientific formulas
and laws are developed and established.
For students, the laboratory is the work shop, a place
where scientific evidences, concepts and principles are
observed and basic laboratory techniques are learned
including record keeping, accurate measurements and
report writing.
The computer center closely coordinates with the
school’s supply office for supply and maintenance of
computers and related equipment. The computer center
also coordinates with the physical Facilities Office for
laboratory maintenance. Computer Center is being
managed by the computer center in Charge, the
laboratory Assistants, and the students Assistants.

FIRST AID AND
EMERGENCY MEASURES
Any untoward incidents in the laboratory – accidents,
leaks, breakages – must be reported immediately to the
laboratory instructor.
In case of accidents, there is a need to be familiar with
the following first aid procedures:

 Chemicals spilled on clothes or any part of the body.

Take off the piece of clothing if possible and wash the
skin with soap and water for 15 to 20 minutes.
 Acids on the skin. Wash the affected area with
plenty of water, then wash it with dilute sodium
bicarbonate solution, and finally wash again with
water. Then apply ointment on the affected area.
 Alkalis on the skin. Wash the affected area with plenty
of water, then wash it with dilute boric acid solution,
and finally wash it again with water. Apply ointment
on the affected area.
 Organic chemicals on the skin. Wash the affected
area with plenty of water, then with rubbing alcohol
(70% isopropyl alcohol) and clean it with soap and
water.
 Chemicals get into the eyes. Remove safety goggles
immediately and wash the eyes with plenty of water
for 15 to 20 minutes.
 Minor cuts. Let it bleed for a few seconds. Remove
fragments of cut glass from the wounded area. Apply
disinfectant and cover it with bandage.

38
Institute of Computing Studies Laboratory Manual 2017
 Serious cuts. See a doctor immediately but sure to
check the bleeding by applying pressure with a sterile
pad over the wounded area.
 Fires from burning clothing. Stay calm. Do not run nor
panic. Use a wet laboratory gown to put off the fire.
Water may also be used. Use vinegar for alkalis.
 Thermal burns. Apply ice on the burnt area for a few
minutes. Cold water may also be used in the absence
of ice. Do not apply any bandage or ointment. In a
severe burn, call a doctor immediately.
 Fires from burning reagents. Use a damp or wet cloth
to cover the mouth of the burning vessel. This should
be done to extinguish the fire and prevent it from
spreading. Turn off all gas
burners. Use a fire extinguisher or dry sand for larger
fires.
 Poisoning by Swallowing. Drink plenty of water
immediately to dilute the poison. Then neutralize the
poison depending on the nature of the poison that
was swallowed. For acids, use milk of magnesia.
 Other types of poisons. Let the victim vomit by giving
him one glass of two tablespoons of tablet salt
dissolved in lukewarm water. This should be
continuously administered to the poisoned victim until
the expelled liquid is clear.
 Eye Accidents. Wash the eyes with a large amount of
water. Do not apply any chemical to the eyes for this
may result to deeper burns as caused by the heat of
reaction.

39
Institute of Computing Studies Laboratory Manual 2017
 Electrical Shock. Remove the source of shock
immediately. Be sure to use a dry towel when
removing or holding live wires or electrical equipment.
Administer artificial respiration right away if the victim
is not breathing.
