CHALLAWA PLANT LAYOUT
CHAPTER 2: FACILITIES AVAILABLE

Nigerian Bottling Company Limited, Challawa is a beverage

producing company. They produce beverages like coke, fanta, sprite,
predator, water etc. Now, for them to produce all these types of beverages,
they use different kinds of machines to achieve it.

Nigerian Bottling Company Limited, Challawa plant, is divided

into 2 smaller plants,
 Brownfield
 Greenfield
And these smaller plants are also into production Lines. Brownfield has
Line 1 and Line 2 while Greenfield has Line 3, Line 4 and Line 5. And
each of these lines have machinery used for the production of Coca cola
products.
2.1 PRODUCTION PROCESSES

The different kinds of beverages produced by The Nigerian

Bottling are subject to strict quality control and inspection procedure
ensuring they meet the highest international standards. The processes
involves the following steps;

 STEP ONE
Pure water is subjected to sophisticated filtering, softening and
disinfecting to remove all impurities.

 STEP TWO

Sugar is added, along with the appropriate beverage concentrate to

produce ‘syrup’, the basic component for the soft drink.
 STEP THREE
The mixture is saturated with carbon dioxide at a low temperature
and under high pressure to give the drinks their renowned ‘fizziness’.

 STEP FOUR
Automatic machinery dispenses the mixture, in precisely calculated
quantities, into sterilized bottles while another cans, caps or seals them.

 STEP FIVE
The containers move to another machine which applies labels and
bar codes, after which they are automatically inspected to guarantee they
meet all requirements.

 STEP SIX
After final checking, bottles and cans are transported to machines
which pack them in cartons or boxes before being laces on wooden
pallets.

 STEP SEVEN
The packaged beverages are delivered by trucks to storage facilities
to await delivery to customers and to be enjoyed by consumers.
2.2 PRODUCTION SITES
Production Sites are the locations in the plant which is used for the
production of Coca Cola products. These sites houses the Productions
lines.

The Production sites in Nigerian Bottling Company are 2 in

number. They are;

 Brownfield
This is the oldest plant in the company. It was established in the
year 1982. Brownfield contains two Production Lines. They include;
i. Line One
Line One was the first production line established at the Challawa
branch. It began its operation in the year 1982. It has a production speed
of about 28,000 bottles per hour(bph). It is also called a RGB(Returnable
Glass Bottle) line. Meaning it uses glass for bottling the Coca Cola
products. It produces 35cl products.

ii. Line Two

Line Two was installed in the year 2013 and it has a production
speed of about 24,000bph. It is also an RGB Line and it produces 50cl
products.

 Greenfield
i. Line Four
Line Four was installed and commissioned in the year 2020 and it
has a production speed of about 30,000bph for 50cl products. It is also an
RGB Line.

ii. Line Three

Line Three was installed and commissioned in the year 2021 and it
has a production speed of about 40,000bph for 35cl, 40cl and 60cl
products. It is also called a PET Line because it uses plastic bottles for the
bottling of Coca Cola products.

iii. Line Five

Line Five was installed and commissioned in the year 2022 and it
has a production speed of about 65,000bph for 60cl products. It is also a
PET Line.
2.3 Equipment Used For RGB Lines

2.3.1 Unpacker

This is a machine used for unpacking the bottles from the crates
which will be used for production.

Method of Operation
 The fed packs are stopped at the removal position .
 The gripper head is lowered and the containers picked up and
removed from the packs .
 The containers are set down onto the container table.
2.3.2 Washer

Washer machine is the machine used for cleaning the bottling used
for production so as to make the product suitable for consumption.

Washing Cycle
 Pre-wash
This consists of a zone for emptying residual liquid from the
bottles and a zone of jets inside and outside of the bottle. In this zone
bottles are pre-heated by the residual heat in the water recycled from the
rinse zone.

 Rinsing
There are three internal and external jet zones with recycled water
and one with cold water. The gradual lowering of the temperature and the
removal of the detergent solution are obtained as the water flows in the
opposite direction to the bottles, thus considerably reducing the amount
of fresh water used. The rinse water is then used in the pre-wash area;
form here part of it can also be used to feed the crate washer.
 Washing
A series of tanks contains detergent solution for the actual washing
action of the bottles. The number of tanks depends on the treatment time
required. The washing operation is effected by means of the chemical
action of the detergent solution and the mechanical action of the internal
jets situated at the outlet of the detergent soaks. Label removal takes
place in this phase.

i. Loading System
The conveyor belt of the accumulation table conveys the bottles to
the automatic loading system, dividing them into separate rows by means
of agitators on the table. The bottles are pushed inside the carrier pockets
by two separate synchronized continuous rotating movements: the first
introducer takes the bottle from the accumulation table and sets it
horizontally on the slides; the second pushes the bottle into the pocket.
Safety devices are fitted on both movements to stop the machine in cases
of overloading. The alarm signal is visualized on the operator control
panel. The bottle separators on the accumulation table are made of plastic
material and allow for quick format changeover, if necessary. The bottle
loading motion is transmitted from the main drive, while the
accumulation table has an independent gearmotor worked by electric
signal directly by the introducer shaft in order to adjust to the speed of the
machine. The table stops for an instant when the first introducer grips the
bottle in order to reduce the pressure from the other bottles.

 Discharge System
The bottle slides down a plastic chute onto a mobile plate. At the
right moment, the plate rotates so that the bottle drops onto a cam which
accompanies it to the discharge conveyor. This cam thus accompanies the
bottle in its falling motion, shifting the bottle previously discharged
towards the discharge conveyor. All parts in contact with the bottles are
made of plastic in order to reduce noise. Three safety systems are used:
the first controls the removal of the bottle from the pocket by means of a
sensor monitoring the position of the chutes; the second checks the
movement of the cams by means of a clutch fitted on the cam support
shaft; and the third monitors the obstruction of the conveyor by means of
a barrier rod fitted at the end of the discharge conveyor. The bottle
separators on the accumulation table and the chutes permit quick format
changeovers if necessary. The system is driven by the main chain drive
gearmotor through an angular transmission connected by a chain.
2.3.3 ALL SURFACE EMPTY BOTTLE INSPECTOR(ASEBI)

ASEBI is a machine used for inspecting the empty bottles used for
production for any impurity.
It is a machine that helps in the full inspection of the empty and
cleaned bottles between the washer machine and the filler machine.

 Base Inspection
This is a function that helps in the detection of foreign objects,
chipping, contamination on the base of the bottle.
 Sidewall Inspection
This is a function that helps in the detection of foreign objects and
contamination on the body, both external and internal. It’s features
include 2- high resolution cameras and 360o inspection. This inspection
happens both at the entry and exit of the ASEBI machine.

 Bottle Finish Inspection

This is a function that helps in the detection of foreign objects,
cracks or chips at the neck of the bottles.

 HF Residual Detection
This is a function that helps in the detection of liquid residue in the
bottle.

2.3.4 Mixer

Mixer is a machine used for for mixing the different ingredients of

a Coca cola product at different proportions to give the desired product.
Working Principle
i. Deaeration
 Water feed to the horizontal deaeration tank via two differently large
sets of nozzles.
 Deaeration via the single-stage or double-stage vacuum process and
optional stripping gas support.
 Reduction of the sealing water consumption to a minimum thanks to a
water saving function in the vacuum pump.

ii. Carbonation
 High-precision carbonation thanks to consistent volume flow rate in
the carbonising nozzle
 Variable mixer output from 100 to 33 percent
 No gas consumption thanks to output regulation in the carbonation
tank − Dosing of up to two gaseous ingredients possible
 Consistent level of technological values despite of variable output
regulation:
 Highly accurate Brix and CO2 dosing
 Consistent deaeration performance

iii. Dosing
 Adding the syrup with a high-precision register control
 Exact Brix value control via flow meter
 Dosing of up to eight liquid components possible
 Top product quality due to multi-stage product homogenization
2.3.5 Filler

The Filler is a machine used for filling the bottles with finished
Coca Cola products coming from the Mixer machine.

2.3.6 Packer

The Packer is a machine used for putting the Coca cola product
filled bottles into the crates to be ship for sales.
Method of Operation
 The bottles on the container table are divided up onto lanes.
 The pre-positioned containers are picked up using gripper heads and
set into the fed packs.
 The bottle formation is set down reliably with the integrated insertion
frame.
2.4 EQUIPMENT USED FOR PET LINE

2.4.1 PREFORM

A Preform is an intermediate product that is subsequently blown

into a PET container.

2.4.2 BLOW MOULD

A Blow Mould is a machine which blows air across heated plastic

that’s placed on top of a mold cavity to create a PET bottle. The air forces
the heated plastic to expand across the interior walls of the mold cavity.
2.4.3 LABELLER

A Labeller is machine used for putting labels on the filled PET

bottles
2.4.4 SHRINK WRAPPER

A Shrink Wrapper is a machine which is used to shrink the wrap

covering the packed and filled PET bottles using heat.
CHAPTER 3: CONTRIBUTIONS

3.1 APPICABILITY OF KNOWLEDGE GAINED

The knowledge gained during my SIWES program at Nigerian

Bottling Company can be applied to my field of study which is Electrical
and Electronics Engineering and also gave me the privilege to lay a solid
foundation for me in the field of Electrical as a Career.

3.1.1 FIELD OF STUDY AND EDUCATIONAL CAREER

In terms of my career, the knowledge I gained about Electrical

machines and Electrical as a whole has been able to help me further my
knowledge on Electrical machines and how they work. I was also able to
learn about other aspects of Electrical Engineering like Automation
Engineering and I came to understand that the field of Electrical and
Electronics Engineering is a very broad one, I was greatly inspired by the
knowledge I gained at Nigerian Bottling Company to be constantly be on
the cutting edge of technology and to get better as it advances. Working
at NBC enabled me to completely comprehend it all.
In terms of my educational studies, as an Electrical and Electronics
student, through the knowledge acquired at Nigerian Bottling Company, I
was able to link some of the courses I was taught in my time as an
Electrical and Electronics Engineering student.
3.1.2 THE COMPANY’S GOALS

Nigerian Bottling Company is a very Goal and Result Oriented

company, one of its goals is to become the undisputed leader in every
market in which they compete. They achieve that by making quality
products that satisfy their customers making them want more of their
products.
My internship provided me with the information and hands-on
experience I needed to help my coworkers advance the company’s
objectives and make them a reality.
The daily work that I was given and the reviews that took place in
meetings helped move the company’s aims ahead.

3.1.3 THE LARGER SOCIETY

There isn’t any country in the world that does consume Coca cola
products. As a company, it is their duty to provide the products in the best
conditions possible. That means the machines must work effectively so as
to be able to run and produce the products. In my opinion, working
diligently to finish tasks on schedule and ensuring that I contribute value
to my department helps us to achieve our objectives, one of which is
maintaining the satisfaction of our customers.

3.1.4 COMPARISON BETWEEN PRACTICAL TRAINING AND

THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE IN SCHOOL

During my internship, I was able to corroborate between what was

taught in school and practical training I got from working in Nigerian
Bottling Company. I saw the relationship between what I was taught at
school and what I learned during my SIWES program.
Before I left school for my internship, some terms were used while
I was working in Nigerian Bottling Company. This was able to give me a
slight edge advantage when I started working.
The chance to complete my internship was a fantastic way for me
to bridge the gap between what I learned in school and how it is
implemented in the working world, particularly in the field of technology.
However, it would be wonderful if some of the courses that we were
taught in school was more focused on the area of study and helped
students develop their balance by ensuring that they are fully aware of
how quickly technology is developing and introduce them to the business
and other disciplines of electrical and electronics engineering in greater
detail.

3.1.5 COMPANY’S CULTURE AND ITS RELATION TO

ATTAINING ITS GOALS

 Authenticity
Nigerian Bottling Company act with integrity and do what is right,
not just easy. We are taught this at the company so as to give the
customers the best products.

 Excellence
Nigerian Bottling Company strive to amaze, with passion and
speed. It makes our products attractive to the public.

 Learning
Nigerian Bottling Company listens and have a natural curiosity to
learn so as to keep improving ourselves everyday.

 Caring for our people

Nigerian Bottling Company believes in their people, invest in them
and also empowers them. It teaches them about empathy.

 Performing as one
Nigerian Bottling Company believes in the power of working
together, contributing in every occasion.

 Winning with our customers

Nigerian Bottling Company customers are at the heart of
everything they do.

 Nigerian Bottling Company long-term strategic framework, which

strives to provide superior value in community trust, consumer
relevance, customer preference, and cost leadership, is firmly
ingrained with our principles.
3.2 CHALLENGES

I firmly believe that challenges are a natural part of life and that
they both benefit the individual and the business. The difficulties I faced
at Nigerian Bottling Company were numerous.

3.2.1 CHALLENGES I FACED

Once at the company, there was a significant problem that I was

faced with. That problem was how to use the tools required to do my
work. I had never really used used tools like a Tester, spanner, cutter,
pliers etc and this was an issue at first. I had to learn how to use them and
eventually I got used to them.
The travel time to and from work for another issue I experienced. I
had to get up pretty early in order to get to work early because it takes
about an hour to get there. It took me some time, but I gradually adapted
to it and it became a natural part of who I am.

3.2.2 CHALLENGES FACED BY MY COMPANY

 Lack of Man power

In my department, a manpower shortage was a problem. There
were occasions when the amount of work required was greater than the
technicians on duty could handle. This increased the amount of time that
machines were idle and decreased the amount of goods that could be
produced.
 Insufficient Training
In my department, there have been instances when the production
machines have had problems, but owing to inadequate training, the issue
could not be fixed until the head technician arrived. The volume of
product produced may be reduced as a result of downtime brought on by
a delay in finding a solution to the problem.

 Unavailability of Materials
In my department, there have been instances where a machine had
a problem but we were unable to properly resolve it due to a lack of
resources, which can lower the machine's efficiency.
3.3 DISCUSSION OF IDENTIFIED PROJECTS

During my Internship at Nigerian Bottling Company, I and my

fellow IT colleague were asked to do project. The project was to control
the water coming out of a small hose used to spray the bottle as the go
into the ASEBI machine.

1. Materials
 Solenoid valve
A Solenoid valve is an electrically controlled valve .A
solenoid, an electric coil with a moveable ferromagnetic core (plunger)
in its middle, is a component of the valve. The plunger closes off a
small aperture in the rest position. A magnetic field is produced by an
electric current flowing through the coil. The plunger is forced
upward by the magnetic field, opening the orifice. The fundamental
idea behind how solenoid valves open and close is this.
 Hose
This is the path in which the water flows.

 Cable
Insulated wire used to transmit electricity.
CHAPTER 4: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

4.1 CONCLUSION

Participating in my internship at the Nigerian Bottling

Company was undoubtedly a great honor. I had the chance to develop
in so many different ways. I was able to acquire a special set of
abilities and apply them to advance my professional route. While I did
experience several difficulties, I was able to get over each challenge
on the way by putting up my own effort, working as a team, relying
on my family, and interacting with everyone I encountered.
I am thankful for this chance since it allowed me to get a taste of
real-world experience. I had numerous opportunities to learn theory
and practical applications in the classroom, but this internship allowed
me to gain application knowledge, to assess my abilities, and to
practice adapting to different contexts. I am appreciative of both
Covenant University and God for providing me with this platform so I
can best represent both my school and myself.

4.2 RECOMMENDATION

I had a great job at Nigerian Bottling Company and loved every

minute of it. I was able to comprehend the nature of the company's
system and how things were done in the work environment I was in
while I was there, gaining significant experience. Covenant
University deserves praise for providing a means of bridging the gap
between the professional and academic worlds. I think the majority of
educational courses or programs ought to work to make them more
current and relevant.
