Opportunities to Serve
As a child, I remember hearing the
common saying, Sticks and stones
may break my bones, but words
will never hurt me. While sticks
and stones can cause physical harm
and words do not, words can hurt
us. Words are important. In our
scriptures, James writes that with the
tongue we bless the Lord and Father,
and with it we curse those who are
made in the likeness of God. From
the same mouth come blessing and
cursing. My brothers and sisters, this
ought not to be so (James 3:9-10
NRSV).
e words we use with family,
friends, colleagues, and the rest of
humanity are important. Our words
can build others up to help them feel
the love of Christ, or our words can
tear others down by breaking their
spirit and lives. As you prepare for the
holidays and spending a lot of time
with family and friends, how are you
preparing to use your words? Will
you nd words of encouragement
and love, or will you fall into the
temptation to be snide and hurtful
as you talk with so many people over
the next few months?
I look forward to seeing you
in worship as we prepare for the
holidays by focusing on how we
will use our Words With friends,
family, and all of Gods creation. We
will strive to see the dierence we can
make simply by what we say and the
way we say it to one another. We will
seek Gods help in taming the tongue
in order to share the love and grace
of Christ to the World! If this holiday
season is really about being thankful
to God for all of our blessings, let
us focus on using our mouths for
the purpose of praising God, and
spreading Gods love.
May the Lord bless you and keep you,
Rev. Jason M. Jones

Sinning Like a
Christian
ursday, November 3,
6:30-7:30pm
William H. Willimon, noted
author, teacher, preacher
and now United Methodist
Bishop, brings his blunt, elo-
quent, and humorous style to
bear on the question of sin.
His penetrating observations
will be welcomed by read-
ers who are dissatised with
shallow, feel-good Christian-
ity (from the le or the right)
that does not attempt to
grapple with our propensity
to do evil.
Searching For
God Knows What
ursday, December 1,
6:30-7:30pm
Miller weaves phenomenal
characters and true-to-life
spectacles into his acclaimed
memoir style to show that
one of the greatest desires of
every person is the desire
for redemption. Instead of
the chaotic relationships, self-
hatred, wreckless consum-
erism, and anxiety, Miller un-
covers the beauty and power
of the Gospel to fulll one of
our deepest needs.
