CLEAN YOUR
DATA IN
POWER BI
1. Remove Unnecessary
Columns

1. Select the column you don't need


2. Right click
3. Press 'remove'
4. Use CTRL to remove multiple columns at once
5. If you remove something incorrectly, press the
'X' in the 'applied steps' window to undo the
action
2. Rename Columns

If you want to change a column name, double-


click on the column header test and then type
your new name.
3. Remove Duplicate
Rows

You must remove duplicate rows before


analysing your data, or the results will contain
discrepancies.

Click on the 'Grid' icon in the top left -> press


'Remove Duplicates'
4. Merge Columns

1. Select the columns to be merged


2. Under the 'Transform' tab, press 'Merge
Columns'
3. Choose either no separator, an existing
separator or a custom separator
4. Name your merged column
5. Split Columns

Split merged columns to analyse columns individually.

1. Choose the columns to be split


2. Press the 'Transform' tab
3. Click 'Split Column'
4. Select a delimiter and its occurrence
6. Replace Null Values

1. Right-click on the column containing null


values
2. Press 'Replace Values'
3. Enter the value to find what you wish to
replace it with
4. Ensure the data type is aligned with the rest of
the column.
7. Change Data Types

Transitioning between data types has never


been easier!

Click on the icon to the left of the column name


and select the data type you want to change to.
8. Sort Columns

Click on the column you want to sort, press the


drop-down arrow on the right of the name and
choose to sort ascending or descending.
9. Filter Data

If you want to filter a column for a particular


value, click on the drop-down arrow near the
column name and select the values you would
linke to filter out for,
10. Apply All Changes

To save all of your changes, press 'close and


apply' (top left corner) to ensure your data is
thoroughly cleaned!
