Background
Even though countries overuse fossil fuels, they also try to use renewable sources of fuel such as solar,
wind and hydroelectric. The data in the ‘Task data’ tab of this spreadsheet shows the population of
various countries, the amount of fossil fuels they use, the cost of building a renewable energy power
plant, and the amount of energy they get from renewable sources.
For this summative task, you will need to submit this document, and your spreadsheet for assessment.
However, ONLY THIS DOCUMENT WILL BE ASSESSED.
Part 1
1. Draw a scatter plot of ‘Population’ vs. ‘Percentage of world's fossil fuels used’ on your Google
Sheet, add the linear regression line, and find the correlation coefficient. Paste a screenshot
below.
2. Describe the direction and strength of the correlation. Consider the r value.
3. An outlier is a value that does not follow the pattern of post of the data. Are there any outliers in
the data set? How do you know?
4. Remove the outlier from your table of data (this will also remove it from your scatter plot). This
will change your linear regression line and the correlation coefficient. Paste your new scatter
plot below.
5. Describe how the outlier affected the strength and direction of of the correlation between the
two data sets. Consider the r value.
3
Part 2
6. Draw a scatter plot of ‘Cost to build renewable power plant ’ vs. ‘Percentage of national power
production from renewable energy’ on your Google Sheet, add the linear regression line, and
find the correlation coefficient. Paste a screenshot below.
7. Describe the direction and strength of the correlation. Consider the r value.
8. Remove any outliers from your table of data (and therefore scatter plot). Paste your new scatter
plot below.
9. Describe how the outlier affected the strength and direction of of the correlation between the
two data sets.
Part 3
10. Summarise the effect of removing an outlier from a dataset (see Q5&9).
11. What could you use a scatter plot with a linear regression for? How would this use(s) be affected
by outliers? Why might you choose to include or exclude outliers?
12. Verify your answer to Q10. To do this, create new scatter charts using new data. You can use the
data in the ‘Sample data for verifcation’ tab in your sheets. You will need to change to data so it
verifies your ideas. Paste screenshots of data and scatter plots below. Explain how your
screenshots verify your answer to Q10.
