they need it.

 Use the first slide with pictures to elicit any words containing today’s sound. Use sound
speech to prompt the students.

the phonemes clearly with enthusiasm. As the dots come in underneath each grapheme
the teacher and students should be calling out the phonemes and blending chorally.
 The last 4 slides practice segmenting. The picture will appear first. See if the students
can name the item and how many sounds make up the word. Have the students show

Segmenting
Activity segment words using today’s sound. First chorally and then some students individually
before each round.
 Have the students sit opposite each other in two lines with beanbags laid out in front of
them. After the students blend and segment a word from the PP count 1..2..3 GO! The
students must grab the beanbag before the other team.
 Practice on the small whiteboards using today’s sound.
Dictation  Remember dictations are a segmenting activity. Children should be given time to listen
to the whole word for all the sounds before the teacher says the sounds separately for
the weaker students.
 Students should show with their fingers how many sounds in each word.
 Mark on the move. Put a tick under correct letters and a dot under incorrect letters to
allow the students to correct their own mistakes.
 Use this time to assess the students writing and ability to form today’s grapheme. This
is a good time to correct any errors from weaker students and push stronger students.
Worksheet:
Writing  Depending on the level of your students you may need to take some time practicing
Practice forming the grapheme before starting the worksheets.
 Model how you want your students to complete the activity sheets and even encourage
stronger students to do this for the rest of the class. This can help highlight and
misconceptions before they work independently.
 Monitor the students as they complete the worksheet. Instead of immediately
correcting mistakes ask the students questions that may help them realize their
mistake. Put a dot under any mistakes for the children to correct themselves.
 Look to pair students up to check each other’s work and see if they can find any
mistakes.

 Using the flashcards ask each student to pick a word to blend and one to segment.
Plenary  Then the teacher picks 2 more for the student to try.
 Make sure this is differentiated with stronger students blending more difficult words.
