when communicating. You must spend time learning the tenses if you are learning English
because they do not just state whether an action is a past, present or future one but also
whether the action is habitual, completed or ongoing.

Directions: Read the short selection and then answer the questions that follow. Study
and analyze the highlighted words for a better understanding of their state and
action.

Best Friends for Life

by: Nericar T. Lopez

Nena and Maria are best friends. They have been spending time together
since their childhood days. They have been enjoying each other’s company
because they have a lot of things in common. Every weekend, they get dressed
and walk to their favorite place, the amusement park. They have been walking to
the amusement park for over fifteen years. They have been watching people from
all walks of life having the time of their lives. They have been chatting all day long
and have been reminiscing their hilarious and embarrassing experiences during
their youth.
Before the pandemic started, Maria had been feeling sick. Nena knew that
something was wrong with Maria. She had been sitting quietly on the bench and

3
had been staring at those people. She had not been laughing loudly whenever
Nena cracked her jokes. She advised her to take the needed rest so that she can
regain her strength.
By December, the two will have been celebrating their friendship for over
two decades. They will have been painting the town red to celebrate their special
bond and love they have for each other.

1. How long have Nena and Maria been spending time together?
______________________________________________________________________
2. What have they been doing in the amusement park?
______________________________________________________________________
3. How had Maria been feeling before the pandemic started? What something strange
did Nena notice about Maria?
______________________________________________________________________
4. By December, for how many years will they have been celebrating their friendship?
______________________________________________________________________
5. Do you have a best friend? How long is your friendship? What are the things you have
been doing together?
______________________________________________________________________

What is It

Read the following sentences taken from the short selection.

1. They have been walking to the amusement park for over fifteen years.
2. Before the pandemic started, Maria had been feeling sick.
3. By December, the two will have been celebrating their friendship for
over two decades.

For how long have they been walking to the amusement park together?
When had Maria been feeling sick?
When will the two have been celebrating their friendship for two decades?

In the previous lessons, you have learned the first three tenses of the verb-
the simple tenses, the progressive tenses and the perfect tenses. This time, you will
be acquainted with the use of the last of the four tenses-the perfect progressive
tenses.

Perfect progressive tenses combine the features of perfect tenses

(completed by the present or a particular point in the past or future) and progressive
tenses (actions that continue for a period of time). They show that something began,
continued, and ended before another action.

4
Perfect progressive tenses often answer the question how long? There are
three perfect progressive tenses: the present perfect progressive, the past perfect
progressive, and the future perfect progressive.

Past Perfect Present Perfect Future Perfect

Progressive Progressive Progressive

She had been She has been She will have been
waiting for an hour waiting all day long. waiting for a week by
PERFECT before he arrived. the time he arrives.
PROGRESSIVE
TENSES
Had been + -ing Has/have + -ing Will have been + -ing
verb verb verb

Present Perfect Progressive Tense

Present Perfect Progressive Tense (also known as the Present Perfect

Continuous) shows that something started in the past and is continuing at the present time.
The present perfect progressive is formed using the construction has/have been + the
present participle (base form of the verb + -ing) or has/have not been + the present
participle (base form of the verb + -ing) for the negative form.

I have been collecting stamps since my high school days.

Susan has not been taking diet pills for years.

In the given sentences, using the present perfect progressive conveys that collecting
stamps and not taking diet pills are activities that began sometime in the past and is not yet
finished in the present.

Recently and lately are time expressions often used with verbs in the present
perfect progressive tense.
Junnel has been playing the piano recently. (And he will continue to do so)
Lately, my grandfather has been experiencing muscle cramps.
(And he still experiencing it now)

Of course, not all verbs are compatible with continuous action. Some examples of
such verbs are to be, to arrive, and to own.
Incorrect: Brylle has been owning his house and lot since 2012.
Correct: Brylle has owned his house and lot since 2012.
(present perfect)
Incorrect: Some students have been being late in coming to school
recently.
Correct: Some students have been late in coming to school recently.
(present perfect tense)

5
Past Perfect Progressive Tense

Past Perfect Progressive Tense (also known as the Past Perfect Continuous
Tense) shows that an action that started in the past continued up until another time in the
past. The past perfect continuous tense is formed using the construction had been + the
present participle (base form of the verb + -ing) or had not been + the present
participle (base form of the verb + -ing) for the negative form.

Words that you may used with the past perfect continuous tense are when, for,
since and before.

Jose had been drinking alcohol before he suffered from liver cancer.
My friend had been crying when her mom passed away.
Mang Ruben had been knocking at the door for 10 minutes when his wife
finally came out.
Jennifer had not been working productively before she got fired from work.

Future Perfect Progressive Tense

Future Perfect Progressive Tense (also known as the Future Perfect Continuous
Tense) describes actions that will be completed at some specified time in the future. It is
formed by using will + have + been + the present participle (base form of the verb +
-ing) or will + have not + been + the present participle (base form of the verb+ -ing) for
the negative form.

It is commonly used to indicate two different time expressions: one specifying a time
in the future and one stating the length of the activity.

By eleven o’clock, Miguel will have been answering the test for two hours.
(“By eleven o’clock” specifies the time in the future. “For two hours” tells the
length of the activity)
The Lopez Family will have been cleaning the whole house for three days
by Sunday. (“By Sunday” specifies the time in the future. “For three days” tells
the length of the activity.
