Calculations for Programming

In-Class Exercise
Examples:

1. Calculate cutting speed (CS) for a 5.125“diameter tool and 70 RPM.

Rough Work:

ANS: C/S=RPM*3.14 *D/12

=93.87 FT/MIN
2. Calculate feed-rate for 750 RPM, 6 cutting edges and feed per tooth of 0.02 mm.

Rough Work:

ANS:90 MM/MIN

3. Calculate feed-rate for 1800 r/min, 4 cutting edges and feed per tooth of 0.003 inches.

Rough Work:

ANS:21.6 INCH/MIN

4. How many inserts (teeth) does a cutter have when it is machining at these conditions:
Spindle Speed = 1500 r/min
Cutting Feed-rate = 12 in/min
Feed per Tooth = 0.002

Rough Work:

ANS:4 TOOTH

5. Calculate the spindle speed (RPM) for a 10 inch diameter face mill at 350 ft/min.
Rough Work:
ANS:132 RPM
6. Calculate RPM for a 72.5 mm diameter cutter running with a surface speed of
120m/min.

Rough Work:

ANS:527.12 RPM

7. Calculate the Z depth for a ¼- inch drill (118 deg), drilling a hole through a 1.7 inch piece
of aluminum using a Break Thru Clearance of 0.1”. Answer to 3 decimal places.

Rough Work:

ANS:- 1.875 INCH

8. Within a 50 mm thick part, a blind hole with a diameter of 8 mm is to be drilled 24 mm

deep (full diameter). What is the final Z depth of the operation as stated in the
program?

Rough Work:

ANS:-26.4MM

9. Calculate spindle speed for a 0.4375” diameter drill at 100 ft/min.

Rough Work:

ANS:873.53 INCH/MM

10. Calculate the drill point length to three decimal values for a 12.5 mm diameter drill with
a 135 deg drill point angle.

Rough Work:
ANS:2.588MM

11. Calculate the cutting time in seconds to two decimal places for a 2.5-inch diameter
cutter with 4 inserts and the following conditions:
Length of cut = 9.0 inches
Spindle speed = 1800 r/min
Feed per tooth = 0.0025 inches

Rough Work:

ANS:
T=30 SEC

12. Calculate the feed per tooth for a 1.750-inch diameter milling cutter with 5 inserts and is
rotating at 1150 r/min spindle speed and 20 inches per min cutting feed-rate. Four
decimal place accuracy is required.

Rough Work:

ANS:.0035 INCH/FT

13. A 30 mm diameter milling cutter with 5 inserts is at 150 m/min cutting speed. The chip-
load is 0.1 mm per tooth. Calculate the feed-rate in mm/min.

Rough Work:

ANS:796.178MM/MIN
