CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of Study

Communication science is a science that studies the procedures of

communication and uses various communication tools as communication advice

to the community. Communication science is not intended for quiet people or

rarely talk? That's wrong. Because as we know communication can be through

oral and written so the statement is just a myth ready you origin of interest,

intention and passion in this department must be fun. We have several labs that

belong to us as learning facilities such as Broadcast Television Laboratory, Radio

Laboratory, Photography Laboratory, Graphics Laboratory, Computer Mediated

Communication Laboratory, Information Management Laboratory, Media and

News Room Laboratory, Event and Conference Laboratory.

In the department of communication science is an interest is done, so that

we are more focused on one of the fields, for example journalism, on this interest

is more focused on the field of journalism, both journalism in the field of print

media such as newspaper magazines and electronic media such as radio and

television. In this interest more in learning about the use of technology the use of

communication and information technology. The growth of national television,

newspapers and radio, requires a reliable journalist, both as a reporter, announcer,

documentary, and news producer.

Everyone must feel unconfident when speaking in public. As a result, there is a

perception that to become a public speaking must have a fundamental ability that

is skill or softskill. Self-distrust is influenced by the lack of mastery of the

material to be conveyed, the status, appearance, or intelligence possessed by the

prospective listener. This will directly cause depression or nervousness.

Therefore, it takes a skill or soft skills from within the individual as well as the

potential they have just need to be displayed.

Public Speaking has many benefits. The purpose of public speaking is to

convey an idea or message to the public with an appropriate method so that the

public can understand and then benefit from the message or idea.

In this digital era, many teenagers who still do not understand and have not

dared to do public speaking or commonly known as 'Public speaking'. Many have

not been able to and even refuse to master the ability of public speaking, even

though the ability of public speaking plays a very large role in this era that has

been all digital. Many factors that make teenagers still hesitant to do public

speaking such as still shy to speak in front of many people, his disbelief, stage

fright, and other factors. In this day and age, knowledge is not everything to

achieve success. A person with higher education is not necessarily easily accepted

to work in a company if he is unable to communicate well in public.

Examples include the story of Warren Buffet, otherwise known as the number 2

richest person in the world, who graduated from college. While working, Buffet

realizes that the biggest weakness that exists in him and interferes with his career

success is public speaking, also known as Public Speaking.

He was always scared and nervous when presenting. Even feel like

vomiting and falling in place while delivering his presentation. This man

continues to try to eliminate his weaknesses and fears. Until finally decided to

participate in a seminar or training public speaking. Warren Buffet was willing to

set aside money and time to come to the class, and finally graduated from public

speaking training and was able to dispel his doubts.

Now able to appear confident to perform in front of many people. The

following years were his most recent successes. Now he has become one of the

richest people in the world because of public speaking, namely Warren Buffet.

The above story shows that public speaking skills are indispensable in the world

of work, such as when presenting, expressing opinions in meetings, and now most

companies make public speaking skills as the highest criteria in assessing

prospective job applicants. Therefore everyone needs to master the ability to

speak in public, especially for teenagers who are still in the stage of finding their

identity.

Based on the background description above, the author chose the title

"Benefits of Public Speaking Ability for Adolescents in the Digital Age" in

writing this paper

 B. Problem Formulation

Based on the background above, the author compiles the problem formulation

as follows:

1. What are the Benefits of Public Speaking Skills for Youth in this Digital

Age?

2. Why should teenagers now be able to understand and apply Public

Speaking?

3. What does Public Speaking have to do with the system in the world of

work?

4. How to communicate effectively related to understanding the correct

techniques to become public speaking?

C. Purpose of Writing

Based on the formulation of the problem and the purpose of the study the

author compiled the limitations of the problem as follows:

1. To understand more about Public Speaking.

2. To know the Benefits of Public Speaking for Youth in the Digital Age.

3. To give others more insight into Public Speaking.

4. To know the relationship of Public Speaking with the system in the

world of work.

Based on the problem formulation and research objectives the authors

draw up the limitations ofthe problem as follows:

4. Beffective communication related to understanding of the correct

techniques to become public speaking

A. Types of Research

Literature research, which aims to collect data and information with the

help of various literature, such as books, books, magazines, brochures,

documents, stories, biographies and others.

B. Data source

The data source of this paper the author takes from the secondary data

that is in the form of library data. Library data is data obtained from

various references collected from various books and articles.

The third chapter is Results and Discussions. And the last chapter is

The Fourth Chapter is The Closing. Which consists of suggestions and

conclusions.

THEORETICAL FOUNDATION

A. Definition of Public Speaking

From the background above I will explain the related public speaking. The

term public speaking consists of two words: public and speaking. Public

means people, the general public, and the people, while speaking means

speaking. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines public speaking as "the

act or skill of speaking to a usually large group of people". Public speaking is

the action or speaking skills to a large group of people.

The term public speaking in the Great Dictionary of Indonesian Language

(KBBI), perhaps because it is still difficult to find translations. The term that

is related to public speaking in KBBI is "speech", which is "disclosure of

thoughts in the form of words addressed to the public". Public speaking is a

skill that can be trained, practiced, and utilized to provide benefits according

to the needs of the audience, among others to convey information, motivate,

persuade and influence others, reach mutual understanding and agreement,

achieve promotion, direct the work of staff, increase product sales / business

profits and share knowledge owned by someone.

B. Public Purpose Speaking

The purpose of public speaking is inseparable from the purpose of

communication, which is to convey a message or idea to the public with the

appropriate method so that the public can understand the message or idea, and

then benefit from the message. In connection with this, a public speaker is

required to be able to choose the right method to convey his message. The

application of public speaking is realized from or not, we often do public

speaking in living daily

life, even by students. Expressing opinions in meetings, telling stories to

friends around, and presentations in front of the class are a handful of examples

of public speaking

C. Public Noise Speaking

Noise in public speaking, in the process of communication is often the

meaning of the message sent by the sender of the message is not the same as

the meaning of the message that has been received by the recipient of the

message. This is due to 'noise' (physical disturbances, semantic problems,

cultural differences, etc.) that can change the meaning of the message. People

with good public speaking skills are people who are able to convey the

message to the crowd, but the message can get to the recipient of the message

according to what you want to convey. Public speaking is not an ability that

we can learn without sufficient practice. To be able to develop our public

speaking skills well, it takes high 'flying hours' in public speaking.

DISCUSSION

A. Benefits of Public Speaking Skills for Youth in the Digital Age

Public Speaking or speaking skills for teenagers in this digital age are

indispensable in order to improve themselves. But more than that, public

speaking also has very important benefits, namely:

1. Professional Boost

Having the ability of public speaking will improve the professionalism of

the work. As an employee or leader, you should have the skills to speak

publicly. By having the ability of public speaking will improve the

professionalism of the work.

2. Improving Self-Ability and Quality

Public speaking skills that are continuously trained indirectly will hone

self-skills that can ultimately improve the quality of yourself.

3. Expand a network

Good communication skills while speaking in public can multiply friends,

acquaintances, business associates who can expand the network.

4. Increase confidence

In the ability of public speaking will unwittingly increase confidence . If

you are used to public speaking and always successful when doing

so, confidence will automatically increase.

One of the reasons they should be able to public speaking early is because

public speaking is very influential to his future. We can see an example of

warren buffet's character story in point 1.1 Background Issues. Because of

public speaking, he can succeed and become the number 2 richest person in

the world. An example of a student of Labschool Junior High School Jakarta,

thanks to his public speaking ability, he has been the host of many school

activities, and has been trusted by the school to host major work programs

such as Performing Arts.

Not to mention in this digital era, we can see in point 1.1 Background

Problems that now, most companies make public speaking skills as the highest

criteria in assessing prospective job applicants. One of the reasons is because

in the world of work, we also need good communication between fellow

employees and superiors and subordinates. Among the benefits of public

speaking, one of the most important is for the careers of teenagers. In the

world of career, there are many professions that desperately need public

speaking skills in it. Although not all teenagers want to become such a

profession, many careers do not require public speaking skills but people who

have public speaking are more successful in that career than those who do not

have public speaking.

Here are some examples of jobs that require public speaking skills in them:

1) Public Speaker

Public Speaker in Indonesian is a Public Speaker. Public Speaker is a person

who becomes a speaker in various forums of study, training, seminars,

trainers, and so on. A Public Speaker usually has expertise in certain fields,

such as religious sciences (ulama / kyai / da'i), economics (economists,

economic observers), political science (politicians, political observers), and so

on. From the name alone it has been seen that this is a profession that

desperately needs the ability of public speaking. Even now in Indonesia there

is an organization for Certified Public Speakers called IPSA. IPSA is an

Indonesian Professional Speakers Association which is a professional

organization of public speakers and professional speakers in the country.

2) MC / Master of Ceremony

MC / Master of Ceremony is also called the host or host. However, the term

MC is more intended for informal hosts, such as entertainment events (for

example music concerts), birthday celebrations, wedding receptions, and

more. The role of MC in an event is to open and close the event, announce the

arrangement of the event and the speakers or performers, introduce the

speakers / performers, generate enthusiasm of the audience.

3) Presenter

In Indonesia, presenters are synonymous with television broadcasters (TV

Presenters). Radio broadcasters are also called presenters, namely Radio

Presenters. His job is to present or present an event or broadcast program). TV

presenters are people who host, guide, or present a television show, such as

news programs (news presenters), music shows, talk shows, quizzes, and so

on.

4) Teacher / Lecturer

A teacher must be able to explain the material to his students well and

skillfully so that they can understand and understand it. Of course, the students

taught by a teacher or lecturer are not few. That causes the profession of

teacher or lecturer is a profession that requires good public speaking skills.

What happens if a teacher doesn't have public speaking skills, they'll get

nervous and nervous while teaching and eventually the students can't catch the

lesson well. This is why public speaking is an important element for a teacher.

The key to successful marketing is good persuasive ability and can influence

others. If a marketing person has good persuasive skills, he or she can

influence others to buy the marketing product. People who have public

speaking skills must also have persuasive abilities or can influence others with

their conversations only. So public speaking is an important element for a

marketing person, and all marketing must have and master it in order to

achieve a successful career.

6) Motivator

Motivators belong to the profession of public speakers. To be more specific, a

motivator is a person who has a profession or livelihood from providing

motivation to others. It can be through training, mentoring, coaching or

counselling. Motivators are tasked with providing motivation to the crowd.

What the crowd meant meant he had to be able to apply public speaking when

he was motivated. Just like a teacher / lecturer, if a motivator does not have

the ability to public speaking, he can fail when motivating and the audience

can not receive information well. These professions are also only some of the

many professions that require public speaking, not to mention the professions

of broadcasters, moderators, reporters, and others. This shows that public

speaking is a very important aspect for the future of young people. Not only

influences in their careers, public speaking skills are also very influential in

their daily lives -- their daily and psychological. As they become easier to

express their opinions, talk and socialize to new people, can get more

acquaintances and much more.

Of the many benefits of public speaking above, it can be concluded that public

speaking is very important to be learned, understood, and practiced by

teenagers early in this digital age.

C. Relationship Public Speaking with the system in the world of work

They also realize that public speaking has a close relationship to success in the

digital era, on average answering that successful people usually because of

public speaking, become easier to communicate and social networking at

work, easier to argue, and others. Showing that public speaking is very

influential for success in the digital age.

For the influence of public speaking in the world of work, many answer

influence because the ability to communicate or public speaking becomes the

main thing in the requirements of job search because there is no smooth job

without good communication, because the majority of people who have a

career must have the ability and confidence to talk in public, and others. The

statements prove that public speaking is very influential in the world of work.

Factors that cause a person to have the ability to public speaking, they mostly

answer that confidence is the key to public speaking. Other answers include

ice breaking skills, courage, eloquent speech, knowing what to talk about, eye

contact, and more.

There are still many who are confused, they want to learn public speaking, but

confused how. Some teenagers answer and provide solutions to these

problems, such as attending training, practicing public speaking skills in a way

that socializes a lot, is bolder and more confident, must have active listening

skills, and many other ways so that we can learn and practice public speaking.

D. Effective communication related to understanding the correct

techniques to become public speaking

A public speaker's job is to convey ideas to the audience and those ideas have

the potential to influence the audience's actions. Therefore, optimal

preparation is required before presenting in front of the audience. I summarize

the strategy and preparation in five things, namely:

1. Audience Recognition, audience recognition can equip us in selecting

materials, crafting, and presenting them with the right strategy. This is

because our knowledge of the public will be concrete. To identify potential

audiences, there are general and special things to note, among others:

a. In general, the number of audiences, age range, gender, occupation,

education, religion, socio-political-economic, and cultural customs.

b. Specifics, among others :

• Pay attention to the motivation of the arrival of the audience

• Pay attention to the level of knowledge auidens

• Pay attention to the possible reactions or attitudes of the audience

2. Organizing the material, the more information it gets the better the

preparation of the material. Some things to note, among others:

• Knowing the required information

• Selecting some information from several collections that have been

obtained

• Structuring the material structure

3. Introduction of the place, a good speaker will recognize in advance the

terrain in which he will speak. Things to note include :

• Attend at least an hour before the event starts to see the overall physical

condition

• Make sure the position when going to talk

• Pay attention to the outdoor or indoors

• Pay attention to the requirements of your need to speak, such as the

completeness of audio visuals

4. Physical appearance, the audience tends to give a rating when it gets the

first impression given by the speaker. Therefore, many things must be

considered in detail, among others:

• Neatness, cleanliness, and suitability of clothing

• Physical appearance when performing, such as

• Standing relaxed but strapping

• Feet must be neat and look polite

• The state of hands relaxed and can perform movements as proportionate

as possible

• Face looks convincing but not tense

Public Speaking Techniques To be an interesting speaker and can give

influence to the listener, required public speaking techniques, among others:

a) Ice Breaking Techniques

- Interesting Opening is the first impression, meaning it can affect the

audience's view of the public speaker during the presentation. No matter how

short the time to make a presentation, the opening should still be warm.

Openings can be done with an illustration or story that is on the rise, but is

relevant to the topic of framing. When delivering it, show a friendly, friendly,

and close face.

- Use Joke Humor may be risky. This is due to its universal nature, while the

tastes of each individual sanagt personal and individual. However, despite the

risk of good humor it can be an effective start to seeking the attention of the

listener. Joke materials are very extensive, because it can be taken from

various stories, everyday cases, advertising images, other people's

experiences, research results, and so on.

b) Vocal Techniques Good vocal conveyance is obtained when a public

speaking master the following three things :

- Breathing A good position to control breathing is to stand upright in order to

provide better space to the lungs. To speak in public, a solid sound space is

required in order to deliver long sentences at the correct volume.

- The volume of success in speaking is not always determined by the loudness

of the voice. The volume when speaking in public is only slightly louder than

the volume of everyday speaking. Speaking loudly is only required in certain

parts. Moreover, speaking loudly too often can cause the throat to break down

and the audience to get bored.

- Expression of vocal Expression is an important factor in sound processing. A

good sound will be more meaningful if accompanied by the right expression.

Expression consists of three components, namely: a) pitch, high factor low

sound, b) pace, speaking speed factor, c) phrasing, proficiency factor

beheading sentence, and accompanied by pause.

CLOSING

A. Conclusion

In this digital era, all teenagers must be able to understand, learn, learn,

and be able to do public speaking or public speaking, at least with the

willingness to learn public speaking. Because in this digital era, everything is

dependent on public speaking, such as daily life day, career, and of course the

future of Indonesian youth.

In the world of work, there are many benefits that can be obtained through

public speaking. One of them is so that one day can make the careers of

teenagers successful. Most of today's teenagers are also aware of the

importance of public speaking and how much benefit of public speaking, one

of which is that by having the ability to public speaking, they can easily be

accepted in the workplace they want. Even they can succeed with their own

company, it is because people who have the ability to public speaking can lure

people with persuasive abilities that can invite and influence others to have the

same way of thinking as it seems.

A. For readers, especially teenagers, it is time to start to understand, learn,

pursue, until they can practice public speaking. A thousand benefits of

public speaking that encourage us to continue to actively learn in order

to get what we want, achieve our ideals, and one day be the next

generation of people who advance the country.

B. For the general public, people should also understand the importance

of speaking ability. This can start their desire to get a lot of

information about the development of the surrounding environment
