TYPES OF

WELDING
Electron Beam Welding
This is a fusion welding process in which a beam
of high-velocity electrons is applied to the
materials being joined. The workpieces melt and
flow together as the kinetic energy of the
electrons is transformed into heat upon impact.
It is often used in applications where a high
integrity weld with low distortion is required (eg.
aerospace applications).

Gas Welding
This is a type of welding that uses a gas flame
(usually oxygen-acetylene) to melt the base
material in the joint line and also to melt the
filler rod. The molten materials mix together,
cool, and solidify to unite the pieces of metal.
It is commonly used for cutting or welding
materials like pipes and tubes.

Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)

This is a semi-automatic or automatic arc
welding process. FCAW requires a continuously-
fed consumable tubular electrode containing a
flux and a constant-voltage or, less commonly, a
constant-current welding power supply. It’s used
in industries that require a large number of
welds or involves outdoor welding and is also
useful for welding material that has some scale,
rust, or other contaminants.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)

Also known as hand-operated metal arc
welding, flux-shielded arc welding, or stick
welding. The arc is struck between the metal
rod or electrode (flux coated) and the
workpiece, the surface of both the rod and the
workpiece melt to create a weld pool. It’s
commonly used in the maintenance and
repair sector and is also used for constructing
steel structures and in industrial fabrication.

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Arc Welding)

TIG welding employs a tungsten electrode
because tungsten has a high melting point. It is
often used to weld together thin and non-ferrous
materials such as aluminum, copper, lead, or
nickel. In the automotive industry, it’s used for
assembling components like exhaust systems,
fuel tanks, and engine parts. In the aerospace
industry, it’s used for joining aircraft
components such as engine parts, aluminum
and titanium structural members, and fuel lines.

MIG Welding (Metal Inert Gas Welding)

MIG welding uses a thin wire as an electrode. The
wire is fed from a spool attached to a gun
through a flexible tube and comes out of the
nozzle on the welding gun or torch. The wire is fed
continuously when the trigger is pulled on the
welding gun. It is widely used for machining
metals. Due to its cost-effectiveness and high
productivity, it’s used in assembly lines. It’s also
used for railroad repair.
