Tutor / Teacher / TA notes

Question Set 1: Identifying translation

Question Set 2: Reflecting shapes in a mirror lin

Question Set 3: Translating shapes to given coordinates

Key Skills

Understanding how to make an image symmetrica

Understanding how to identify a translatio

Performing reflections in a mirror lin

Plotting and reading coordinate

Translating shapes to given coordinates

Key Words:

Symmetrical: When two or more parts are identical after a flip, slide or turn

Reflection: An image or shape as it would be seen in a mirror

Translation: "Sliding": moving a shape without rotating or flipping it. The shape

still looks exactly the same, just in a different place

Vertex: The point at which two or more lines intersect. Plural: vertices

Coordinates: A set of values that show an exact position. On graphs it is usually

a pair of numbers: the first number shows the distance along, and the second

number shows the distance up or down.

Slide 1: Fluency

Teaching prompts

1) How do we make something symmetrical? (by making one side a reflection of the

other)

2) What is a translation? ("Sliding": moving a shape without rotating or flipping it.

The shape still looks exactly the same, just in a different place.)

Watch out for

Pupils not counting the full distance in a translation and only the gaps in between.

Help pupils with this by identifying one vertex and placing a dot on this vertex on

both shapes.

Answers

2) three squares to the right

Question Set 1: Identifying translations

Encourage pupils to attempt the question independently.

Teaching prompts

What does it mean for an image to be translated? (It has been moved without

rotating or flipping it. The shape still looks exactly the same, just in a different

place.)

If stuck

Next slide - lets go through it together.

Answers

1 mark for both correct, as shown:

Question Set 1: Identifying translations

Encourage pupils to attempt the question independently.

Teaching prompts

Can you work out how many squares shape A has moved left and down? (3 down

and 3 left )

Why has one vertex been highlighted? (it is easier to work out how a shape has

travelled by focusing on one vertex.)

If stuck

Draw in the jumps left and down:
