Tutorial 02 Answer
Subject -Engineering Material (D33C001M09)

1. List out different types of engineering materials

 Metals
 Ceramic
 Polymer
 Composite

2. List out the carbon percentage in following ferrous alloys

a. Low carbon steel – 0.05% -0.35%
b. Medium carbon steel – 0.35 -% - 0.5 %
c. High carbon steel – 0.5 %- 1.17%
d. Cast iron – 2 %- 4%

3. What are the additional properties can be obtain when following elements are added with steel?
a. Chromium – corrosion resistance, wear
b. Manganese – Hardenability, more response to heat treatment
c. Tungsten – high temperature strength
d. Nickel - toughness
e. Copper – corrosion resistance
f. Titanium –elimination of carbide precipitation

4. List out the types of carbon steel

 Law carbon steel
 Medium carbon steel
 High carbon steel
5. Describe the differences between cast iron and steel in terms of composition, microstructure,
mechanical properties and utility in producing complex shapes.
Steel Cast Iron

Carbon that is added to iron is Carbon has precipitated out and appears as
dissolved and disappears. flakes
Carbon content is below 0% to 2.0% Carbon content is 2.0% to 6%
Weak under compression forces Carbon flakes provide a cushioning effect
compared with cast iron for cast iron under compression loads
Good tensile strength More brittle than steel and poor tensile
strength

6. Write down the applications of cast iron

 Because of its high damping capacity and compressive strength, it is used for frames of large
equipment and machinery
 Because of its good resistance to wear it is used for engine blocks, piston rings, brake drums, rolls
and crushers
 In architecture it is used for threads of stair cases and lampposts.
 Because of its castability, machinability, damping capabilities and compressive strength it is used
for manhole covers, furnace gates.

7. List out the types of cast iron

 Ductile cast iron
 Malleable cast iron
 Gray cast iron
 White cast iron
 Special alloy cast iron

8. Describe the properties and uses of copper

 High Thermal Conductivity: Used in heat exchangers, heating vessels and appliances,
 High Electrical Conductivity: Used as electrical conductor in various shapes and forms for various
applications.
 Good Corrosion Resistance: Used for providing coating on steel prior to nickel and chromium
plating
 High Ductility: Can be easily cold worked, folded and spun. Requires annealing after cold working
as it loses its ductility.

9. List out the main two types of copper alloys

 Brass
 Bronze

10. Describe the properties and uses of Zinc

 High corrosion resistance: Widely used as protective coating on iron and steel.
 Coating may be provided by dip galvanizing or electroplating.
 High fluidity and low melting point: Most suitable metal for pressure die casting generally in the
form of alloy.
 When rolled into sheets, zinc is utilized for roof covering and for providing a damp proof non-
corrosive lining to containers.
 The galvanized wires, nails, etc. are produced by galvanizing technique and zinc is also used in
manufacture of brasses.
