Exercises 3

The document discusses three exercises related to flow optimization. The first asks to recommend an overall flow pattern to reduce flow given a from-to chart. The second provides routing information for four products across four departments and asks to determine the from-to chart and recommend a flow pattern. It also asks which layout would be preferred given distance information. The third exercise asks to recommend a layout based on flow between departments and costs.

EXERCISES 3

1) Given the following from - to - chart, recommend an overall flow pattern that will
reduce flow.

2) A company produces 4 products in its production facility. The facility has 4

departments A, B, C, D. The routing information, production quantities, and volumes for
each product are given in the table below.
Product Quantities/day Routing Volume
(compared to Product 1)
1 15 B-A-D-C-A 1
2 20 A-D-C-B 1
3 14 A-C-D-B 2
4 10 B-A-C-D 0.5

2.1) Determine the from-to-chart. Recommend a flow pattern.

2.2) The distance from A to B is 50units, B to C is 50 units, and C to D is 50 units. In the

case (b), the distances from A to C and B to D (and reverse directions) are given by the
hypotenuse of triangle formed by the departments. Which layout would you refer? Why?
Using the sum of the distances it takes for each product to complete production routing,
and if it only takes one trip to transfer between each department, we have the following:

3)

Flow-Between Chart.
Arrangements/Costs:
A B C D: 30(200 + 200 + 1200) + 60(3300 + 2800) + 90(700) = 477,000
B A C D: 30(200 + 3300 + 1200) + 60(200 + 700) + 90(2800) = 477,000
C B A D: 30(200 + 200 + 700) + 60(3300 + 2800) + 90(1200) = 507,000
D B C A: 30(2800 + 200 + 3300) + 60(1200 + 200) + 90(700) = 336,000
Switch A and D:
B D C A: 30(2800 + 1200 + 3300) + 60(200 + 700) + 90(200) = 291,000
C B D A: 30(200 + 2800 + 700) + 60(1200 + 200) + 90(3300) = 492,000
A B C D: 30(200 + 200 + 1200) + 60(3300 + 2800) + 90(700) = 477,000
Switch B and D:
C D B A: 30(1200 + 2800 + 200) + 60(200 + 700) + 90(3300) = 477,000
A D C B: 30(700 + 2800 + 200) + 60(3300 + 2800) + 90(200) = 495,000
Final Arrangement: B D C A
