Chemistry Project for Class 9

Prepare a project on the recognition and identification of the following gases:

Hydrogen, Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Chlorine, Hydrogen chloride, Sulphur dioxide, Hydrogen sulphide,
Ammonia, water vapours and Nitrogen dioxide.
Instructions:

1. Use either a thread file with interleaf sheets or a thin chemistry practical file to write the
experiments.
2. Cover you file with a white sheet and write your name, class and section clearly.
3. An example of how to write the experiments is given below. Follow the same methodology
for the rest of the nine experiments.
4. The experiments must be hand written only.
5. The experiments must be written on the ruled side while the relevant reactions on the blank
side.
6. The reactions must include one reaction related to preparation of gas and the other
reaction(s) must be related to the confirmatory test(s) of the gas.

Experiment 1

Aim: To recognize and identify the unknown gas.

Materials required: Reactive metal, dil. HCl, test tube. Procedure:

S.No. Experiment Observations Inference

1 To the reactive metal (except for A colourless, odourless Gas evolved maybe O2,
Na, K and Ca) added diluted HCl gas was evolved with H2
or diluted H2SO4 . effervescence. CO2 or N2

2 Moist blue litmus and moist red No change Gas may be O2,
litmus paper was brought to H2 or N2
the mouth of the test tube.

3 Brought a burning Burns with a pop sound H2 is confirmed

splinter to the mouth of the test
tube.
Result: The gas evolved was Hydrogen.

PHYSICS
Class-IX
Project Work

Guidelines: Follow the guidelines carefully while making the project

1. The project has to be made in a project file which will have ruled and unruled sheets,
like an interleaf file.
2. The project file has to be covered with white chart paper and only black pen to be
used for writing ‘Physics project in the centre and Name, Class, Section and Session
on the lower right hand side of the cover page i.e.
PHYSICS PROJECT
NAME
CLASS, SECTION
SESSION
3. The first sheet to be inserted is the Acknowledgement sheet.
4. The second sheet to be inserted is the index sheet where the heading and page
numbers will be mentioned
5. The matter has to be hand written and so the diagrams. Printed material will not be
accepted.
6. The last page of the project should have the heading ‘Bibliography/Sources’. Under it
you will mention the books, internet sites and other sources from where you got the
information for the project.
7. The whole project work including pictures should be roughly between 15-20 pages.

Prepare a project on the following topics:

1. Measurement of volume and diameter of a metal bob:

A metallic bob is provided to you. You need to find out the volume of the bob using
displacement method. For that you are provided a measuring cylinder and water. The
volume of the cylinder is 100 ml. You pour 50 ml water in the cylinder. Then you drop the
bob into the cylinder and observe the present water level is at 90 ml. Calculate the volume of
the bob and also its diameter in C.G.S. and S.I. units. (1ml=1cm3)

2. Measurement of dimensions, volume and density of a block:

A block (cuboid) is given to you. The length, breadth and thickness (height) of the block
is measured with a metre rule and the observation reading (data) is given below:
(A) Measurement of length: (l)
Serial number Length in cm Mean length in cm
1. 4.2
2. 4.4
3. 4.3

(B) Measurement of breadth: (b)

Serial number Breadth in cm Mean breadth in cm
1. 3.3
2. 3.2
3. 3.1

(C) Measurement of height: (h)

Serial number Height in cm Mean height in cm
1. 2.3
2. 2.4
3. 2.5
Calculate the volume of the block in C.G.S. and S.I. units. If mass of the block is 260 g,
then calculate the density of the material of the block in C.G.S. and S.I. units.
3. Finding the expression for acceleration due to gravity from the slope of
T2 vs l sketch: For a simple pendulum plot a graph of T 2 vs l, where T is the time period
of the oscillation of the pendulum and l is the effective length of the pendulum. Obtain the
expression for slope of the graph and from the slope obtain the expression of acceleration due
to gravity (g).
4. Image formation by a concave mirror:
Draw the ray diagrams and show the image formation by a Concave mirror for the following
positions of the object: (a) at infinity, (b) beyond centre of curvature but not at infinity, (c) at
the centre of curvature, (d) between centre of curvature and the focus,(e) at the focus, (f)
between pole and the focus.(use pencil and ruler to draw the ray diagrams). Also mention the
nature of the images in each cases.

5. Simple electric circuit:

You are provided with two dry cells (source of dc), a key, a bulb. You need to connect the
cells with the key and bulb in series and close (connect) the circuit by inserting a plug in the
key. Draw the circuit diagram (show the direction of current and the bulb is glowing). If a
second identical bulb is connected (a) in series and (b) in parallel with the first one, draw the
circuit diagrams of both the cases. Compare the brightness of the bulbs in series and in
parallel.
