Assignment 2 - CHE433 - Sem20232

This assignment involves analyzing the performance of a newly acquired adiabatic steam turbine. Students must determine changes in properties, power output, and supplier strengths. They also investigate relationships between exit pressure and power/temperature, and entropy changes during steam condensation and in a Carnot engine using the condensed steam.

3.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE ASSIGNMENT

At the end of this assignment, the student should be able to:

a) Apply the fundamental knowledge/basic concepts taught in the classroom to directly relate to
engineering problems.
b) To analyse the first and second law of thermodynamics in energy analysis for closed and open
system
c) To evaluate the thermodynamics system performance based on first and second law of
thermodynamics

4.0 DESCRIPTIONS

A group consisting of three to four (3-4) junior engineers was given several tasks to evaluate the
performance of a newly acquired adiabatic steam turbine. The purpose of the steam turbine acquisition is
for power generation works. The tasks to be completed by the group are as follows:

QUESTION 1
(PO2, CO2, C4)

Consider a steady flow of steam through an adiabatic turbine at mass flow rate of 12kg/s. The inlet and
outlet conditions of the steam are given in Table 1 below. The engineers are required to determine:
(a) the change in kinetic energy,
(b) the power output, and
(c) the turbine inlet area
(d) show the process on a P-v diagram
(e) identify three top global brands of steam turbine suppliers and assess their strength or advantages

Conditions Inlet Outlet

Pressure 4 (MPa) 30 (Kpa)
Temperature (°C) 500 -
Velocity (m/s) 80 50
Quality (%) - 92

QUESTION 2
(PO2, CO2, C4)

Steam inlet and outlet pressures are important parameters that determine the power output. The group is
required to investigate the relationship between the turbine exit pressure and the power output of the
turbine. For this study, the exit pressure is to be varied from 10 to 200 kPa. Using the Microsoft Excel
software, prepare the data as per Table below and plot i) the power output against the outlet pressure, and
ii) outlet temperature against the outlet pressure. The plots must contain 10 data points. Analyze the trends
and comments on results observed.

QUESTION 3
(PO2, CO2, C6)

The group is now required to investigate the condensation of the steam exiting the turbine for the following
situation.

Consider 1 kg of saturated water vapor (saturated vapor) at 100 °C is to be condensed to a saturated liquid
at 100 °C in a constant pressure process. During the process, heat is transferred to the surrounding air at
25°C.

(a) evaluate the net increase in entropy of the water plus the surrounding
(b) based on results in (a), comments if the process can take place

The engineers thought that they can salvage the heat from the saturated liquid water to generate more
power. To test this idea, they introduced a Carnot heat engine as illustrated in Figure below:

(c) Evaluate the work output for this system. Assume that the decrease in the entropy of the water is equal
to the increase in the entropy of the surroundings
(d) plot the processes undergone by the water within the Carnot engine on a T-s diagram
