Introduction to MS Excel

Basic Components:

 Cell: The building block of a spreadsheet, where you enter data like numbers, text,
or formulas. Each cell has a unique address (e.g., A1, B2

 Row: A horizontal line of cells, numbered from 1 onwards (up to 1048576)


 Column: A vertical line of cells, lettered from A onwards (up to XFD).

 Sheet: A single table of data within a workbook, accessible through tabs at the
bottom.

 Workbook: A file containing one or more sheets, representing the entire Excel
document.
 Ribbon: The main menu bar at the top, providing access to commands for
formatting, calculations, charting, etc.

 Formula Bar: Displays the formula or content currently entered in the selected cell.

Data and Calculations:

 Data: The information entered into cells, including numbers, text, dates, etc.
 Formula: An instruction that tells Excel how to calculate a value based on other cells
or data.
 Function: A pre-defined formula for common calculations, like SUM, AVERAGE,
VLOOKUP.

Formatting and Presentation:

 Formatting: Changing the appearance of cells, like font, color, borders, etc.

 Number Formatting: Specifying how numbers are displayed (e.g., currency,


percentage).
 Alignment: Positioning text or numbers within cells (left, right, center).

Charts and Graphs:

 Chart: A visual representation of data using bars, lines, pie slices, etc.

 Graph: Similar to a chart, but often used for specific types of data like line graphs.

Analysis and Exploration:

 PivotTable: A dynamic table summarizing and analyzing large datasets.


 PivotChart: A chart created from a pivot table, providing visual insights.
 Sorting: Arranging data in a specific order (alphabetical, numerical).

 Filtering: Displaying only specific data based on criteria.
