What’s New

Directions: Please read and analyze the given problem. Write your
answer on a sheet of paper.

Aliyah participated in the barangay feeding program for

the families who were at the evacuation center. She started
to cook arroz caldo at 4:10 a.m. and finished at 4:50 a.m.
How long did Aliyah cook the arroz caldo?

Answer the following questions.

1. What is asked in the problem?

2. How will you solve the given problem?

3
What is It

Let us see if we got the same answer. You can get the answer
by finding the elapsed time.

What do we mean by elapsed time?

Elapsed time is the length of the time when an event

happened from the start to the end.

 You can use a number line to solve for the answer.

Start counting from 4:10 by 5s up to 4:50 to get the elapsed
Time.
40
minutes
5min 5min 5min 5min 5min 5min 5min 5min

4:10 4:50 5:00

4:00 4:30
started finished
cooking cooking

Aliyah cooked arroz caldo for 40 minutes.

 You can also count the number of minutes from the time Aliyah
started cooking to the time she finished cooking by using a
chart.

Start 4:10 Minutes

4:20 10
4:30 20
4:40 30
End 4:50 40
Elapsed time: 40 minutes

4
 Try also subtracting 4:10 from 4:50
4:50 Think 4:50 as 4 hours and 50 minutes.
4:10 Think 4:10 as 4 hours and 10 minutes.
0:40 Then, subtract the time when the event
started from the time the event ended.
Elapsed time: 40 minutes.

How about if regrouping is needed?

Read the following problem.

Noli helped his mother packed

relief goods for the barangays affected
by the typhoon. They began at 8:45
a.m. and ended at 9:25 a.m. How long
did they pack relief goods for the
barangays affected by the typhoon?

 You may subtract 8:45 from 9:25.

9:25 Think 9:25 as 9 hours and 25 minutes.

- 8:45 Think 8:45 as 8 hours and 45 minutes.

9:25 8:60+25 1. Rename 1 hour as 60 minutes.

9:25 8:85 9 hour becomes 8:60.
- 8:45 8:45 2. Add 60 and 25 minutes. It will
0:40 become 8:85.
3.Then, subtract 8:45 from 8:85.
4. Write the answer with label.

Answer: They packed the relief goods for 40 minutes.

Now that you already know how to find the elapsed time, you
may now proceed for the next activities!

Lesson
Estimating the Elapsed Time
2
When we find the elapsed time, we always find for the actual
elapsed time. But if we want to get an answer that is close enough
but not the actual one, then we need to estimate the elapsed time.
In this lesson, you will learn how to estimate the duration of
time in minutes (M4ME-lllf-12).

What’s New

Do you obey your parents when you are asked to do something?

How do you show your willingness to obey?

Read and analyze the given problem.

Mang Rodel owns a poultry farm. He asked

Joven to gather eggs every morning.
Joven started to gather eggs at exactly 8:05 a.m.
He finished gathering at around 8:48 a.m. About
how many minutes did he gather eggs at the
poultry farm?

What is Joven doing?

At what time did he start and finish gathering the eggs?
What is asked in the problem?
What phrase in the problem tells that an estimated elapsed time
is asked for?
How can we find the estimated length of time Joven gathers eggs?

10
What is It

Let us study how to find the estimated elapsed time.

When we use the phrase “about how many”, we do not ask

for the exact answer but we estimate the amount of time that
passes through from one time to another.
Estimate the length of time Joven gathers eggs.
How can you do it?

Step 1. Round the minutes in the time ended and time started to
tens.

Actual Time Estimated Time

_ 8:45 _ 8:50
8:05 8:10

Step 2. Subtract.

Actual Time Estimated Time

_ 8:45 _ 8:50
8:05 8:10
0:43 0:40

Actual elapsed time Estimated elapsed time

Answer: Joven gathers eggs for about 40 minutes.

To see if the estimated elapsed time is reasonable we have to

find the actual time and compare it with the estimated time.
Observe that the estimated elapsed time is close enough to
the actual time.

11
Let us study other examples:
Estimate the elapsed time.
