ETN4086 Mobile and Satellite Communications Assignment 2

Satellite Orbital and System Properties

1. OBJECTIVES
• To strengthen the understanding on satellites orbital properties.
• To investigate the link budget and link performance of real and active satellites.
• To apply the knowledge obtained on satellite orbits and link performance.

2. INTRODUCTION

In this assignment, students are required to choose one satellite and research on the orbital properties
as well as the link performance of the satellite as has been discussed in Chapter 6 and Chapter 7 of
the lecture, respectively.

3. PREPARATION
• Read the assignment sheet.

4. PROCEDURES

a) Choose one of the satellites in the list given. There are more than 2000 active satellites as of
January 2020. Thus, everyone is expected to choose a unique satellite.

5. DISCUSSION
a) Based on your choice in Section 5(a), find the following information of the satellite:
(i) Name of Satellite
(ii) Users (Civil, Millitary. Government or Commercial)
(iii) Detailed Purpose
(iv) Class of Orbit (LEO, GEO etc.)
(v) Perigee (km)
(vi) Apogee (km)
(vii) Eccentricity
(viii) Inclination (degrees)
(ix) Period (minutes)
(x) Power (watts)

Note: Please make sure you include references to where the information is taken from. Marks
will be deducted if there is no references.

b) Sketch the satellite’s orbit based on the information that you have obtained above and label
accordingly.

c) Compute item (i) to (x) using the shortest distance between the satellite and earth. Note the
followings:
Noise bandwidth = 105 kHz
Boltzmann constant, k = 1.379  10-23 J/K
U/L uplink
D/L downlink
E/S earth station
PFD Operating power flux density
SFD Power flux density at saturation
C/XPD Carrier to cross-polarization interference ratio
